The boss of the restaurant told him several times to go away, but the boy could not leave the wonderful smell. At last, the cook came out of the restaurant. Taking hold of his arm, he declared that the boy had been feeding upon the smell of their food. He asked the boy to pay half the price of a meal. The poor fellow said that he neither could nor would pay. At that moment, a police happened to pass. He said to the boy, “You have been feasting one of senses with the good smell of this mans meat, you should satisfy one of his senses. How much money do you have?“ “I have only two pence in all the world, sir and I must buy some bread.“ “Never mind,“ answered the policeman, “Take your two pence between your hands. Now rattle them loudly.“ The boy did so, and the officer, turning to the cook, said, “Now, sir, I think he had paid you the smell of your delicious food. The smell of your food rewarded his nostrils(鼻孔) and the sound of his money rewarded your ears.“ This decision gave more satisfaction to the bystanders than to the cook, but it was the only payment he could get.,(1)、The cook asked the boy to give him some money for feeding on the smell of the food. (2)、The boy reported what happened to the police in the police station. (3)、The police asked the boy to make noises with the two pence. (4)、The cook finally got some money. (5)、The policeman was not satisfied with the solution.,A foreigners first impression of the U.S. is likely to be that everyone is in a rush - often under pressure. City people appear always to be hurrying to get where they are going restlessly, seeking attention in a store, and elbowing others as they try to complete their errands (任务). Racing through daytime meals is part of the pace of life in this country. Working time is considered precious. Others in public eating places are waiting for you to finish so that they too can be served and get back to work within the time allowed. Each person hurries to make room for the next person. If you dont, waiters will hurry you. You also find drivers will be abrupt and that people will push past you. You will miss smiles, brief conversations, and small courtesies with strangers. Dont take it personally. This is because people value time highly, and they resent someone else “wasting“ it beyond a certain courtesy point. The view of time affects the importance we attach to patience. In the American system of values, patience is not a high priority. Many of us have what might be called “a short fuse.“ We begin to move restlessly about if we feel time is slipping away without some return - be this in terms of pleasure, work value, or rest. Those coming from lands where time is looked upon differently may find this matter of pace to be one of their most difficult adjustments in both business and daily life. Many newcomers to the States will miss the opening courtesy of a business call, for example, they will miss the ritual socializing that goes with a welcoming cup of tea or coffee that may be traditional in their own country. They may miss leisurely business chats in a caf or coffeehouse. Normally, Americans do not assess their visitors in such relaxed surroundings over prolonged small talks. We seek out evidence of past performance rather than evaluate a business colleague through social courtesies. Since we generally assess and probe professionally rather than socially, we start talking business very quickly.,(1)、Which of the following statements is wrong? _ A:Americans seem to be always under pressure. B:Americans attach less importance to patience. C:Americans dont care much about ritual socializing. D: Americans are impolite to their business colleagues. (2)、In the fourth paragraph, “a high priority“ means _. A:a less important thing B:a first concern C:a good business D:an attractive gift (3)、Americans evaluate a business colleague _. A:through social courtesy B:through prolonged business talks C:by establishing business relations D:by learning about their past performance (4)、This passage mainly talks about _. A:how Americans treasure their time B: how busy Americans are every day C:how Americans do business with foreigners (5)、We can infer from the passage that the authors tone in writing is _. A:critical B:ironical C:praiseful D:objective,Today the official language of the United States and most of Canada is English. However, French almost became the official language because of a war. The French and Indian War was fought between 1754 and 1763. The name of this war is not accurate because the war was actually between England and France. The Indians fought on the side of the French. France and England were trying to gain control of North America. France held Canada, and England held part of what is now the United States. However, France tried to expand its land by moving southward into New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Virginia. When the French built a fort(堡垒)on the Ohio River, the residents in Virginia sent George Washington to attack the fort in 1752. However, the French defeated Washington. The French, aided by the Indians, outsmarted(比聪明) the English and won many early battles. Later, the British began to do well against the French. In the final battle in Quebec, Canada, General Wolfe of England faced General Montcalm from France. Both generals died in this battle, but the English outlasted(比持久)the French and won the battle. Thus, most of North America today has the English culture and language.,(1)、The best title for this passage is “The French and Indian War“. (2)、The word “gain“ in the 3rd paragraph is closest in meaning to “buy“. (3)、We may conclude that George Washington preferred the English. (4)、General Wolfe died in Canada. (5)、Washington won his battle at the fort on the Ohio River.,Many people who work in London prefer to live outside it, and to go in to their offices or schools every day by train, car or bus, even though this means they have to get up early in the morning and reach home late in the evening. One advantage of living outside London is that houses are cheaper. Even a small flat in London without a garden costs quite a lot to rent. With the same money, one can get a little house in the country with a garden of ones own. Then, in the country one can really get away from the noise and hurry of busy working lives. Even though one has to get up earlier and spend more time in trains or buses, one can sleep better at night and during weekends and on summer evenings, one can enjoy the fresh, clean air of the country. If one likes gardens, one can spend ones free time digging, planting, watering and doing the hundred and one other jobs which are needed in a garden. Then, when the flowers and vegetables come up, one has got the reward together with those who have shared the secret of Nature. Some people, however, take no interest in country things: for them, happiness lies in the town, with its cinemas and theatres, beautiful shops and busy streets, dance-halls and restaurants. Such people would feel that their life was not worth living if they had to live it outside London. An occasional walk in one of the parks and a fortnights (two weeks) visit to the sea every summer is all the country they want: the rest they are quite prepared to leave to those who are glad to get away from London every night.,(1)、Which of the following statements is NOT true?_ A:People who love Nature prefer to live outside the city.
