课时跟踪练(一) Warm up & Lesson 1 Pre-reading. AMaking an advertisement for television often costs more than a movie. For example, a twohour movie costs $6 million to make. A TV commercial can cost more than $6,000 a second. And that does not include the cost of paying for air time (播送时间). Which is more valuable, the programme or the ad? In terms of money and making money is what television is all about the commercial is by far the more important.Research, market testing, talent, time and money all come together to make us want to buy a product. No matter how bad we think a commercial is, it works. The sales of charm went up once the ads began. TV commercials actually buy their way into our head. We, in turn, buy the product. And the ads work because so much time and attention are given to them. Here are some rules of a commercial ad making. If you want to get the middleclass buyers, make sure the announcer has a tough, manly voice. Put some people in the ad who work with their hands. If you want to sell products to upperclass audience, make sure that the house, the furniture, and the hairstyle are the types that the group identifies with. If you want the buyer to feel superior to the character selling the product, then make that person so stupid or silly that everyone will feel great about himself or herself. We laugh at commercials. We dont think we pay that much attention to them. But evidence shows we are kidding ourselves. The making of a commercial that costs so much money is not kid stuff. Its big, big business. And its telling us what to think, what we need, and what to buy. To put it simply, the TV commercial is a form of brainwashing.1TV commercials are more important than other programmes to television because _.Athey bring in great profitsBthey require a lot of moneyCthey are not difficult to produceDthey attract more viewers than other programmes解析:选A推理判断题。 2The purpose of all the efforts made in turning out TV commercials is to _.Apersuade people to buy the productBshow how valuable the product isCtest the market value of the productDmake them as interesting as TV movies解析:选A推理判断题。 3From the rules set for making commercial ads, we can see that _.Athe middleclass buyer likes to work with his handsBthe more stupid the characters, the more buyers of the productCad designers attract different people with different skillsDan upperclass buyer is more interested in houses and furniture than a middleclass buyer解析:选C推理判断题。 4It is believed by the writer that _.Afew people like to watch TV commercialsBTV commercials are a good guide to buyersCTV commercials often make people laughDpeople do not think highly of TV commercials解析:选D推理判断题。由文章最后一段中“We dont think we pay that much attention to them. But evidence shows we are kidding ourselves.” BDo you dare to sleep on the wild side? The sharks are out there attracting us in, desperate for our money. You cant believe everything you read, even in a newspaper.I just saw an airline ad for holiday travel, promising me in VERY LARGE type that I could go almost anywhere for $199. Then, when I looked a little closer, there was a star that referred me to the tiny type at the bottom of the page that the $199 was a oneway fare. But I couldnt make a oneway trip. I had to buy a roundtrip ticket.I dont have a clue why they didnt just say the roundtrip ticket was $398. In fact, I think its a much more powerful selling point. For just under $400 youre able to return home from a holiday.Who in their right mind would want a oneway ticket? But perhaps the cruelest marketing trick done on us is the “calories per serving (一份食物的热量)” on food packaging. For years, I lived happily with the belief that each package was a serving. I didnt realize that each box or bag had a number of servings in it. So I ate. Who ever believed a whole bag of potato chips could have only 150 calories? Me. And yes, Im a fool. But once I learned the trick that had been played on me, I became bored. I would multiply the number of servings in the bag with the calories per serving, quickly realizing millions of calories were hiding in those containers.I finally calmed myself down and now dont even look at the calories per serving. It makes life easier. Thats why my recent purchase of the first box of holiday eggnog (蛋奶酒) was such a pleasure.Santa can count the servings. Ill drink till I sleep. If only that mattress (床垫) were on sale.8Consumers always have had to be clever because _.Amost people are lacking moneyBnewspapers always tell false storiesCthere are many attractive salesmen aroundDthey are easily cheated by ads or something解析:选D细节理解题。 9In the authors opinion, the price of $199 was _.Atoo high to acceptBreasonable to payCequal to $400 in realityDnot practical at all解析:选D推理判断题。 10Why does the author think of himself as a fool?AHe ate a lot of food poor in calories.BHe believed potato chips were healthy food.CHe thought each serving had few calories.DHe mistook calories of per serving for each bags. 11Whats the main idea of the text?AGoods on sale are usually bad.BAds today are hard to understand.CBuyers should beware of marketing tricks.DForgetting the calories makes life easier. The Internet has opened up a whole new online world for us to meet, chat and go where weve never been before. But just as in facetoface communication, there are some rules of behavior that should be followed when on line. _1_ Imagine how youd feel if you were in the other persons shoes. For anything youre about to send: ask yourself, “Would I say this to the persons face?” If the answer is no, rewrite and reread. _2_If someone in the chat room is rude to you, your instinct (本能) is to fire back in the same manner. But try not to do so. _3_ If it was caused by a disagreement with another member, try to fix the situation by politely discussing it. Remember to respect the beliefs and opinions of others in the chat room._4_ Offer advice when asked by newcomers, as they may not be sure what to do or how to communicate. When someone makes a mistake, whether its a stupid question or an unnecessarily long answer, be kind about it. If its a small mistake, you may not need to say anything. Even if you feel strongly about it, think twice before
