Then they got a call from one of his daughters: “The house next door is on fire!” He went over and saw three women crying madly on their porch (门廊). “The babys in the second floor!” one of the women cried. Though the fire department had been called, Surrell, then 64, bravely ran inside. “The baby” was Tiara Roberts, the womans granddaughter and a playmate of Surrells three youngest kids.Entering the burning house was like “running into a bucket of black paint,” Surrell says. The thick smoke caused him to stumble blindly around, burned his eyes, and made it impossible to breathe. The conditions would have been dangerous for anyone, but for Surrell, who has chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(慢性阻塞性肺病), they were life-threatening. Taking a deep breath, he moved around in the overwhelming darkness. Because the house had a similar layout to his, he found the stairs and made it to the second floor. Then he heard a soft but clear moan. Still unable to see, Surrell fell to his knees on the hot wood floor. He crawled toward the sound, feeling around for any sign of the girl. Finally, he touched something. A shoe, then an ankle. He pulled Tiara toward him, scooped her into his arms and stood. Turning, he fought through the smoke and ran blindly into the blacknessSurrell woke up in the hospital a couple of days later and spent over a week in the hospital. Tiara was released from the hospital after a few days. The fire worsened Surrells pulmonary condition, and he feels the effects even two years later. As a result, he takes extra medication that helps open his airways. “Its a small price to pay,” he says. “Id do it again in a heartbeat. I wouldnt give it a second thought.”21. Which of the following statements is true according to the story?A. Tiara Roberts was the Surrells youngest granddaughter.B. Surrell was familiar with the structure of the burning house.C. Surrell ran into the fire before the fire department was called.D. The fire was life-threatening for Surrell, mostly considering his age.22. What does the underlined word “overwhelming” probably mean?A. Normal. B. Unexpected.C. Mild.D. Extreme.23. Judging by the story, which words best describe Surrells personality?A. Humorous and patient.B. Outgoing and intelligent.C. Warm-hearted and selfless.D. Determined and ambitious.BAfter years of trying, our neighbors convinced my parents that ice fishing would be a fun winter getaway from our dairy farm. Before that, their idea of entertainment involved driving around the countryside to see how the neighbors crops were doing. My parents eventually built a fish house and set it up on Wood Lake. We excitedly headed for the lake on many January and February weekends. By the time we arrived at our favorite fishing spot across the lake each day, somebody had usually made a clear path across the ice. The fish houses were together at the best fishing spots, forming some kind of a neighborhood. Our house was large enough so all four of us could fish at the same time. Each corner had a square cut out of the floor. We sat in comfort. Youd think ice fishing would be cold, but we had a small woodstove (木炉) inside, and we put snow around the bottom of the house to keep the wind from blowing underneath.Besides the thrill of watching your bobber (钓鱼浮标) dip below the water, lunch was always the highlight of the day. Mom would fry pork or hamburgers in a pan. The smell of cooking meat was the envy of every other fish house in the neighborhood. Our days passed with a mix of quiet time and family chatter. We talked about the farm or school. And of course, we shared fishing advice. Part of the fun of ice fishing was learning to understand and trust the sounds of the frozen lake. Healthy ice “talks” as it freezes and shifts. You could often hear the sound of a crack traveling through the ice.People who have never tried ice fishing may not think it sounds very exciting, but it was for us. Fishing trips were an adventure. We didnt always catch fish, but we always brought home great memories of a day with family and friends.24. Which is true about entertainment for the authors family before the fishing trips?A. They enjoyed visiting the countryside.B. They had little choice for entertainment.C. They preferred to take care of their farm.D. They loved to do research on growing crops.25. Why did the author put snow around the bottom of the fish house?A. To protect the fish house.B. To follow an old local tradition.C. To block the wind underneath.D. To sit in a comfortable position.26. What can be inferred from the text?A. The authors mom was not quite interested in cooking.B. The authors family shared fishing advice with each other. C. The author considered those trips enjoyable and meaningful. D. The authors family usually fished alone, far from the crowd.CI have a pair of pants. Tell me: How many different ways can I put a pair of pants to use?Now imagine youre Lady Gaga. Bill Gates. A scuba diver. An architect. You still have the pants. What other uses come to mind? What you just practicedthe conscious act of “wearing” another selfis an exercise that, according to psychiatrist Srini Pillay, MD, is essential to being creative. One problem about our understanding of creativity is that we tend to connect it to our concept of self: Either were “creative” or we arent, without much of a middle ground. “Im just not a creative person!” a frustrated student might say in art class.Dr. Pillay, an assistant professor at Harvard University, has spent a good part of his career challenging these ideas. He believes that the key to unlocking your creative potential is to reject the old advice that urges you to “believe in yourself.” In fact, you should do the opposite: Believe you are someone else. Dr. Pillay points to a 2016 study where the authors educational psychologists Denis Dumas and Kevin Dunbar-divided their college-student subjects into three groups, instructing one group to think of themselves as “poets” and another to imagine they were “librarians” (the third group was the control). The researchers then presented all the participants with ten ordinary objects, including a fork, a carrot, and a pair of pants, and asked them to come up with as many different uses as possible for each one. Those who were asked to imagine themselves as poets came up with the widest range of ideas, whereas those in the librarian group had the fewest. Meanwhile, the researchers found only small differences in students creativity levels across academic majors. In fact, the physics majors pretending to be poets came up with more ideas than the art majors did. These results, write Dumas and Dunbar, suggest that creativity is not an individual trait but a “product of context and perspective.” Everyone can be creative, as long as he or she feels like a creative person.27. What is Dr. Pillays attitude to the findings of the 2016 study?A. Supportive. B. Doubtful. C. Neutral.D. Critical.28. Why does the author mention the physics majors had more ideas than the art majors in the experiment?A. To prove that physics can help develop creativity.B. To emphasize that creativity had little to do with majors.C. To show that poets are really more imaginative than librarians.D. To imply that physics majors are more creative than art majors.29. Regarding creativity, which of the following statements will the author most likely agree with?A. I am born to be uncreative.B. I shall become creative when I grow up.C. I have to learn poetry to be creative.D. I can be a creative person if I feel like one.30. Which of the following is the best title for the article?A. Want to be creative? Just pretend!B. How many ways can I use a pair of pants?C. What is the mystery of creativity?D. Everything we knew about creativity is wrong!第二节 (共5小题, 每小题2分, 满分10分)根据短文内容, 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项, 选项中有两项为多余选项。The cane toad (海蟾蜍) was imported to Australia in 1935 to protect sugarcane crops. 31 Experts estimate that there are currently over 200 million samples spread across Northern Australia, and the numbers are only growing. The increasing population is proving to be deadly for many native Australian animal species that hunt the toads as food. 32 While some animals have learned to completely avoid the frogs, the Australian monitor lizards continue to be killed by them. The lizards that catch small animals love eating cane toads. 33 It takes the cane toad less than 30 seconds to release enough poison to kill a lizard. 34 They decided to train the lizards to avoid the cane toads. To carry out the idea they went to a region of northwestern Australia that had not yet been invaded by cane toads and fed the wild lizards with young cane toads. Though the smaller animals release the same poison as the adults, they do so in smaller amounts. 35 The researchers say it took just one or two tests to teach the lizards to stay away from cane toads. They continued to avoid the animals even when the larger cane toads arrived.A. Not surprisingly, their population has dropped sharply.B. Unfortunately, in most cases, it turns out to be their last meal.C. With very few natural enemies, their population began to grow rapidly.D. Now a team of researchers came up with a good plan to save the lizards.E. Gradually, the lizards learned to eat only the mildly poisonous cane toads.F. Therefore, while the poison does make the lizards sick, it does not kill them.G. Thats because cane toads release some deadly poison when they sense danger. 第三部分:语言运用(共两节, 满分45分)第一节:完形填空 (共20小题; 每小题1.5分, 满分30分) 阅读下列短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C和D中四个选项中,选出可以填入空白的最佳选项。One Friday afternoon in my first year of high school, I saw a kid from my class walking home.
