电影刮痧观后感The review of Gua Sha the cultural conflict between china and western countries Author: 08620104 刘璐 Abstract: After watching the movie Gua Sha, I realized the strong cultural conflict between china and western countries. As the process of globalization, this is inevitable, and it has made many jokes and embarrassments, which do no good to the development of our relationships with other countries. So its of great importance for us to know the reasons and whats more find solutions to them, making intercultural communication more fluent and enjoyable. Key words: Gua Sha, intercultural communication, cultural conflict, solution, A brief introduction to the movie The movie Gua Sha reveals many cultural conflicts between china and western countries. The content is about a Chinese, Datong Xu, picked up his father to the US, after he got success there. Once, Datongs son, Daniel, got a stomachache, his father treated him with the traditional Chinese methodGua Sha. However, when the little boy went to the hospital to have a body check, the doctors who knew nothing about Gua Sha, saw the bruises on his back, and doubted that the child was ill-treated at home. So the doctor contacted the child protective services of America. Thus, a series of lawsuit were aroused. Though Datong has lived in the US for eight years, he didnt get used to the American thought-pattern, which caused all the conflicts in the movie. for instance, at the party, when his son hit his bosss son, and didnt want to apologize, he hit his son in front of many people, he thought it was out of respect of his boss; and there was emergency when his wife was to give birth to his son, and he said to the doctor he wanted his wife to be protected but not the child. As Chinese, we totally understand all the behavior of Datong, but, the Americans do not. They even misunderstand him. I remember a sentence of Datongs father very much, he said: Gua sha has existed in china for thousands of years, but why we cannot explain it in the America? Actually, there are far more things that are very common in china cannot be understood by foreigners. That is what we called cultural conflict. As the process of globalization, there are much more links between china and other countries. What we are facing are the different culture, thought-pattern, and lifestyles. The cultural conflicts are inevitable. What we should do is to communicate with them, to understand their culture and make the understand ours. The frequent conflicts in intercultural communication The conflict in privacy Many Chinese do not care much about privacy, they think they belong to the collective, and people should establish solidarity and friendship with each other, which make them want to know more about other people, they think thats a way of showing care. However, westerner care much about the privacy, they want their own space, and arent willing to mention much about their private things in communication. Thus, this is a field, where conflicts occur very often. For example, in the first meeting, Chinese may ask about the age, job, family, etc. but the westerners think those questions are impolite and violate their privacy. The conflict in time concept Westerners associate their time concept closely to their money concept. Naturally they think time is money, and the cherish time very much. They always make elaborate plan about their day and they formed the habit of keeping an appointment on time. In western countries, one should inform other person involved ahead of schedule and explain your purpose, time and place if he wants an appointment. While many Chinese dont pay much attention to this, they are more casual. The conflict in being moderate Its a traditional virtue for Chinese to be moderate. When others are complimenting them, they tend to make self-dispraise to show their politeness. On the contrary, in western countries, when people are praised, they often accept the compliment. When Chinese hear their answers, they may think the foreigners being too boastful; likewise, the westerners regard the Chinese dishonest. The conflict in table manners Hospitality is another traditional virtue in china. When having meals together, they like to propose a toast or offering cigarettes. The host always puts more food on to the guests plate. But some westerners may treat this as enforcement. They think the guests can have whatever they want, and its unnecessary to let them get drunk. Ways to resolve the conflicts Pay great attention to nonverbal communication We propose that nonverbal communication involves all those nonverbal stimuli in a communication setting that are generated by both the source and his or her use of the environment and that have potential message value for the source or receiver. They sometimes play a more important role than verbal communication. Its of great necessity for us to learn the different meanings of them. For instance, Chinese believe that silence is gold, they think silence include a variety of information, while people in English speaking countries dont feel very well about the silence. And when westerners are communicating, they like to watch the eyes of the other side, they think thats respectful. But Chinese regard it as impoliteness. Learn more about western culture In college, the time in the class is limited, and students have much time to control by themselve
