ADear Sir/Madam,I live next to your school in Grasmere Road and I am writing regarding the very bad behaviour of some of your younger students. In addition to this, I should like to bring to your attention to the irresponsibility of certain members of your staff when supervising (监督) students evening activities.Firstly, concerning the students behaviour, I should like you to make it very clear to those students walking along Grasmere Road towards the station that my front garden is not a place where people are allowed to leave their rubbish. When they leave school in the afternoons, they pass my house and throw empty cans, waste paper and even cigarette packets (although most of them are below the age for smoking) on my grass. Could you also please ask your students not to shout and use bad language in the street, as this is harmful to the reputation of both your school and the area?Regarding certain members of your staff, you are perhaps unaware of the fact that their evening activities sometimes continue well beyond ten and the noise is too loud. Last Thursday night the noise did not stop until 10:30 pm. Surely the members of staff supervising these activities could bring the events to a close at a suitable moment.I know that I am speaking for many families in the area when I ask you to speak to your students and staff about these matters.Should they continue to be so inconsiderate, I shall be forced to take matters further and shall have no choice but to write to the council (地方议会)Yours faithfully,Mrs J Barker1The text is a letter of _.AintroductionBcomplaintCinvitationDthanks解析:选B主旨大意题。由第一段中的“I am writing regarding the very bad behaviour of some of your younger students”及“bring to your attention to the irresponsibility of certain members of your staff”可知,这封信的主要目的是投诉。2Which of the following is destroying the areas reputation in Mrs J Barkers eyes?AThrowing rubbish.BSmoking cigarettes.CMaking too much noise.DShouting and using bad language. 由第三段中的“not to shout and use bad language in the street, as this is harmful to the reputation of both your school and the area”可知,大喊大叫及使用不文明语言的行为正在损害这个地区的名声。3What is Mrs J Barker going to do if these matters are not solved?ATurn to a lawyer.BTake further action.CKeep an eye on them.DContinue to write to the school. 由最后一段中的“be forced to take matters further and shall have no choice but to write to the council (地方议会)”可知,如果这些事情再发生的话,Mrs J Barker会采取进一步措施,给地方议会写信。BAs America got ready to celebrate its Independence Day on July 4, Canada was preparing for a big celebration of its own. On July 1, 2017, Canada turned 150! That day, more than half a million people visited Ottawa for the countrys biggest birthday celebration ever. At the same time, hundreds of parties, fireworks displays and performances were taking place across Canada to mark the occasion. As we all know, native peoples like the Inuit have lived in Canada for thousands of years. About 500 years ago, French and British explorers started arriving there. They claimed some of the land for their countries. The two countries often fought over control of the land. The British won full control of the area in 1763. But French remains one of the official languages of Canada, along with English. Canada became fully independent of Britain in 1982.Over the years, Canada has grown to include a total of 10 provinces and three territories (领土). It is now the second largest country in the world. And at more than 5,500 miles, its border with the US. is the longest border between two nations.Canadians are proud of their country. Canada even recently made the list of the 10 happiest countries, according to a 2017 United Nations report. Located not far from the North Pole, its cold and icy north is home to about twothirds of the worlds polar bears. Its icy and snowy land also helps explain why some of its popular sports are ice hockey, skiing and curling. They are also very proud of the countrys history of welcoming people from around the world and of the diverse population. 4What do we know about the celebration of Canada Day in 2017?AIt was bigger than that of Independence Day.BOver a million foreign people attended it.CMany different activities were held.DIt was celebrated on July 4. 5What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about?AHow Canada came as a nation.BWhy explorers lived in Canada.CThe people who controlled Canada.DThe official languages of Canada. 6What makes the sports in Canada so different?ACanadas cultural background.BCanadas geographic location.CCanadas diverse population.DCanadas special weather. CResearchers in Seattle said last year that captured (被捕获的) crows remember the face of their abductor (绑架者). Even though years had passed since they saw the threatening face, the crows in the experiment would divebomb him, suggesting the birds held tightly to a negative association. Now the researchers followup study shows that the birds brains light up much like the human mind when they see a face they know. “The regions of the crow brain that work together are not unlike those that work together in mammals, including humans,” said lead researcher John Marzluff of the University of Washington. “These regions were suspected to work in birds.” In the study, 12 male adult crows were captured by researchers who were all wearing one type of mask, referred to in the study as the threatening face. Then during four weeks, the birds were fed by people wearing a different mask. Though both disguises had neutral (中性的) expressions, this mask was referred to as the caring face. The researchers injected a fluid into the bodies of the crows. The crows were then put in the presence of someone wearing either the threatening or caring mask for about 15 minutes before the birds were given a brain scan (扫描). The fluid showed which parts of their brains were most active around a certain maskwearer.Marzluff said it appears the smart birds have a region of their brain that is similar to the amygdale of mammals. “The amygdale is the region of the mammal brain where negative associations are stored as memories,” he said. “Previous work primarily concerned its function in mammals, while our work shows that a similar system is at work in birds.”“Their brain activity suggests that the birds view their keepers who fed and cared for them as valued social partners, rather than animals that must be feared,” Marzluff said. 7How would a crow react upon seeing its abductor?AIt would fly away at once.BIt would try to attack him.CIt would follow him quietly.DIt would give a loud warning. 由第一段“ . would divebomb him, suggesting the birds held tightly to a negative association”可知,多年之后那些乌鸦仍旧会攻击那些曾绑架过自己的人。8What do we know about the crows brains?AThey function as well as humans.BThey keep only negative information.CThey work like humans in some areas.DThey are totally different from mammals. 由第二段“The regions of the crow brain that work together are not unlike those that work together in mammals, including humans”可知,乌鸦大脑中的某些区域同人类大脑的某些区域工作模式是一样的。9What does the underlined word “disguises” in Paragraph 3 refer to?AMasks.BResearchers.CCrows.DFaces. 10Why did the researchers put a fluid into the crows bodies?ATo make the birds excited.BTo help locate the amygdale.CTo make a brain scan possible.DTo see what was going on in the crows brains. 由第四段“The fluid showed which parts of their brains were most active around a certain maskwearer.” .阅读七选五“Migrant Mother” is one of a series of photographs that Dorothea Lange made of Florence Owens Thompson and her children in Nipomocamp, California in 1936.
