But can you also smell their happiness? Surprising new research suggests that happiness does indeed have a pleasant smell, and that the experience of happiness can be transmitted (传播) through smell. For the study, 12 young men were shown videos meant to bring about a variety of emotions while researchers collected sweat samples (样本) from them. All of the men were healthy and none of them were drug users or smokers, and all were asked to abstain from drinking or eating smelly foods during the study period. Those sweat samples were then given to 36 equally healthy young women to smell, while researchers observed their reactions. Only women were selected to smell the samples, obviously because previous research has shown that women have a better sense of smell than men and are also more sensitive to emotional signaling.“When a person is happy, his sweat brings about a state similar to happiness in somebody who breathes this smell,” said study co-author Gun Semin, a professor at Koc University in Turkey. This is a fascinating finding because it not only means that happiness does have a pleasant smell, but that the smell is able to pass the emotion to others. The study also found that other emotions, such as fear, seem to carry a smell too. This ensures previous research suggesting that some negative emotions have a smell, but it is the first time this has proved to be true of positive feelings.Researchers have not isolated (分离) exactly what the chemical compound for the happiness smell is, but you might imagine how to make use of such a finding. Happiness perfumes, for instance, could be invented. Scent therapies (香味疗法) could also be developed to help people through depression or anxiety. 21. What is the main finding of the new research?A. Men produce more sweats.B. Negative emotions have a smell.C. Pleasant feelings can be smelt out.D. Women have a better sense of smell.22. The underlined part “abstain from” in Paragraph 3 probably means ”.A. avoidB. practiceC. continueD. try23. What is the application value of the new research?A. Perfumes could help people understand each other.B. Some smells could be developed to better our mood.C. Perfumes could be produced to cure physical diseases.D. Some smells could be created to improve our appearance.24. Which of the following statements is TRUE?A. Happiness comes from a scent of sweat.B. Men have a better sense of smell than women.C. Positive feelings have not been proved to have a smell before.D. Researchers have developed happiness perfumes and scent therapies. BMy husband, Black, a manager of a company, came home from work one day saying, Its looking terrible. At midnight, I woke up seeing him sitting in a chair, his hand on his forehead. I was worried. I had to cheer him up and help ourselves financially. As an advisor for top companies and a teacher in creative thinking at the college of New Jewsey for years,I thought of a good plan. What if we undertake and adventure while making money from it ? Wed always talked about traveling more, but wed been tied to routines(日常事务). Now I saw no point in sitting around worrying when we could see the country. Wed take our three young kids and teach them on the road. It was the perfect time before they reached high school. Wed rent out our house. We listed our house for rent and created a brand strategy, logo, and website for us-family , and persuade five companies to support us. Their ads on our site would help pay travel costs, and wed promote their brands on our trip in exchange for their support. With everything done, we took off on April 3 . All spring and summer, we visited national landmarks and treasured lands. By August when we returned home, Blacks company continued to slide and now may have to close down. But weve made the travel a permanent part of our lives. Whats more, with a Chicago-based production company Ive developed the Family Off Track brand by creating videos, educational programs and exhibits. And Black has new ideas for management business. Its great to see the spark in his eyes again. Now I feel it even more. Together we taught our kids a lesson: Nobody ever made history by living 100 percent by the book in times of recession(不景气)25. Black was in low spirits because_A. he couldnt sleep well for many daysB. he lost his interest in his businessC. his company was in financial troubleD. his manager was about to fire him26. The familys story is a good example to prove that_A. A good fame is better than a good faceB. An ounce (盎司) of luck is better than a pound of wisdomC. Every man is the architect of his own fortuneD. Accidents will happen. CA Japanese telecom company has designed a robot that it says has emotionsBut rather than run in fear from it,weve welcomed it into our homes:Pepper, the “emotional robot”,sold out within a minute of going on sale.Created by Aldebaran Robotics and Japanese mobile giant SoftBank,Pepper went on sale to the general public in Japan June 20. It is “the first humanoid(类人的) robot designed to live with humans”,Aldebaran says on its website. Pepper costs about1,600. And like all good mobile products, theres a120 per month data fee,as well as an80 per month damage insurance fee. According to a news report,Pepper can pick up on human emotions and create his own using a “multi-layer neural(神经的) network”Peppers touch sensors and cameras are said to influence its mood, which is displayed on the tablet-sized screen on its chest.Pepper will sigh when unhappy, and can go around your house recording your familys daily activity. Aldebaran says Pepper can feel “joy, surprise, anger, doubt and sadness”,but it doesnt say how strongly it can feel these emotions. What happens when Pepper is having a bad day? Will it,like many humans, become uncooperative? Will it ask for some time alone? What happens if it knows that its purpose in life is just to take part in small talk? Thankfully,Pepper is only about four feet tall, with roller balls instead of legs,so if it is angry with and even turns on its owners, youll be safe if you can make it upstairs.Aldebaran says in reality, theyre probably quite a few years away from artificial intelligence that could create real emotions.Aldebaran wasnt immediately able to tell when Pepper will be available out of Japan, but additional sales are scheduled for July after the first 1,000 units sell out. SoftBank currently uses the robots in its stores as greeters ,and it plans to offer Pepper to other stores in the future. Hopefully “boredom” is not an emotion Pepper can feel.28.According to the author,Pepper_.A is very popular among customers B can not only run but also show fearC is going to be sold all over the world D can deal with many kinds of housework29.How much do you need to pay for Peppers data and damage insurance fee each year?A 80 dollars. D Pepper is being used as waiters in some restaurants.DSince the first Earth Day in 1970,Americans have become a lot “greener” toward the environment.“We didnt know at that time that there even was an environment, let alone that there was a problem with it,”says Bruce Anderson, president of Earth Day USA.But what began as nothing important in public affairs has grown into a social movement. Business people, political leaders, university professors, and especially millions of grassroots Americans are taking part in the movement.“The understanding has increased many, many times,”says Gaylord Nelson, the former governor from Wisconsin, who thought up the first Earth Day.According to US government reports, emissions(排放)from cars and trucks have dropped from 10.3 million tons a year to 5.5 million tons. The number of cities producing CO beyond the standard has been reduced from 40 to 9. Although serious problems still remain and need to be dealt with, the world is a safer and healthier place. A kind of “green thinking ” has become part of practices.Great improvement has been achieved. In 1988 there were only 600 recycling programs;today there are about 6,600. Advanced lights, motors, and building designs have helped save a lot of energy and therefore prevented pollution.Fortyfive years ago, there were hardly any education programs for environment. Today, its hard to find a public school, university,or law school that does not have such a kind of program.“Until we do that, nothing else will change!”says Bruce Anderson.32According to Anderson, before 1970,Americans had little idea about _.Athe social movementBrecycling techniquesCenvironmental problemsDthe importance of Earth Day33Where does the support for environmental protection mainly come from?AThe grassroots level.
