City Life a Life Style to Build up Yourself,福建师大学外语学院03级2班 陈文彬 As cities keep on developing, more and more rural people rush into cities for different reasons. Some want to find a high-income job; some expect to win respect by his intelligence and confidence; and others want to chase their dream. For these reasons, city has become a theater which attracts many audiences. Like most of other people, I would like to live in the city. It is true that compared with city life, country life is peaceful and tranquil: Every field and every road is conquered by the smell of unknown flowers. Birds sing in the tree. Rivers pass your house. All this may make you feel comfortable and want to slow down your pace to enjoy life, to entertain yourself, and to be with your family. Its good for you to relax yourself for a short time. But what if you live in the country for about twenty or thirty years? You will find that you lose your passion of life, your courage of competition and the chance of viewing this marvelous world. For this I dont like to live in the country. Compared with country life, city life is full of opportunity and miracle. Maybe you are an ordinary person at the beginning. You come from an ordinary family and you dont have enough money. But if you try your best to do whatever you can, you will realize your dream and be famous. I like to live in the city because city will make me successful.,City is more convenient than country. Roads and streets cover the whole city. If you want to visit other cities or enjoy the sea at the weekend, you can take buses, trains or planes. If you live in the city, distance is not a problem but money is. By contrast, country isnt convenient enough for you to visit other places. Though you have much money and have a fast car, you will find that the road is not as good as what you have thought. Thinking of that-you live in a place where you cannot move easily, or visit your friends as frequently as you want-what can you do? Sit in the sofa and watch TV? But sometimes you will find that you cant pick up any programs because you live far away from the city. To some extent, I would like to live in the country for a short time. Sometimes, if I cant stand the pressure any more, I will find a place which is far from city to live in. But after I struggle out of the pressure, I will return to the city. English writer Dr Samuel Johnson once said, “If you are tired of London, you are tired of life.” London stands for the city life. I will not be tired of life. So I will not be tired of living in the city because the style of city life can help me to build up myself. Dr Samuel. Johnson (1709 -1784) is one of the most famous writers in the English history. He is also a critic, a poet, a biographer. He wins the whole worlds respect by his talent.,Once More to Our Pretty Garden,2002级英语教育2班 黄珊 It is raining outside. Such kind of weather always makes me think about you, my dear friend. Are you now watching the rain through one of the windows in this big city? I decide to take a walk in our pretty garden and let those beautiful moments come back to my mind. Now I am walking in the path of our pretty garden in which we used to spend our time together. It was an old garden which had been neglected, and we found it together and you named it. I am happy to find that it looks the same as before, and trees and flowers are growing freely. Years ago, when it drizzled, you always took me here without umbrellas. We would run and laugh, enjoying ourselves a lot. The rain in autumn had once seemed to me cold and vexing, but you were such a pure and romantic girl that you changed my mind. Because of you, the rain in that autumn became poetic and the rainy season we spent together turned out to be hazy and beautiful. From then on, I fell in love with this kind of weather.,The radio in my pocket is now sending a sad song. I remember that we used to talk about music, literature and dreams in our pretty garden. When we had some wild emotions, we wrote down our feelings and then exchanged our diaries. We dreamed about being writers when we grew up. You always said you were so happy as if we were in the heaven. I smiled, and you did not realize that you were my little angel. Now your favorite little purple flowers are flickering in the rain. The little purple flowers blossom in autumn and cover almost the whole garden this time of year. Whenever we stood under these trees, those flowers would make us drunken. And when the wind blew, petals flew down, we enjoyed the petal rain hand in hand. That scene was just like a dream. At that time, our pretty garden was our heaven. Once more when I stand in our pretty garden, those things would come to my mind clearly as if they just happened yesterday. My dear friend, do you know how much I miss you, especially on such a rainy autumn day? Those memories will never be lost. I will always keep you in my heart.,No Excuse Again,2002级英语教育2班 林浈 There is a motto hanging on the wall of my chamber: A life is like a field of newly fallen snow. Where I choose to walk, the steps will show, which was given by my father. Every time I stand in front of it, I cant help recalling what happened three years ago. At that time I was an active cell in PuTian Middle School .As a member of the Students Union I often helped them to do some correspondence .One day before the final exams, the Union suddenly wanted some people to write some articles for them. But every one was so busily engaged in preparing for the exams that hardly could anyone be willing to waste a minute to do such a job. But when the president asked me to do it as a rookie, I, in order to give him a good impression, promised without hesitation. The following days, I was buried in stakes of books, totally immersed in hills of papers until the day the president asked me for the article-which was still castle in the air. I was very surprised “So soon? I havent put down a word.” “I have given you two weeks, and how can you say so quickly! ” “But, please - “But we badly need it .All right I will give you another day and I hope I can see it on my table tomorrow morning” Undoubtedly, It is impossible for me to finish it in so short a day; and the article was so clumsy that the next day, the president told me I was fired by the Union. Weekends came and I went back disappointed .my father noticed the dark feeling on my face and asked me why. I told him what had occurred to me. “How can they do such things on me?” I complained angrily. Patting on my shoulder to console me, he asked “why you didnt write it immediately after you promised it. “Because I was so busy at that time and whats more-”I was trying to find more reasons “Lin, you have to remember that every time you are in trouble dont rescue yourself with excuses. Excuse is the hotbed of laziness and timidity. Everyone who wants to be successful has to be brave enough to face his own fault.”,“Well-I didnt make the business seriously. In fact-I could do better-”I cast my eyes on my feet. That night my father wrote that motto and had it hanged in my chamber .For the past three years every time I came back from school I would stand before it to think over what I have done in the past days: Had I weaved excuses for myself? Had I blamed my own fault on others? And I thought that all the times Id been late and blamed traffic rather than saying “I should have left earlier.” In addition, I realized Ive been blaming anyone else, anything else but myself and whats more, I wasnt alone. Ive never seen anyone arriving late without explaining that the delay was someone elses fault. I began to notice how pervasive blame shifting was that it had woven firmly into the fabric of our society:(as Tyler described in his essay) Drunks arent just drunks, theyre suffering from alcoholism; criminals are not just creeps; they are the sacrifices of society; kids who are victims of dysfunctional families are underdogs who were programmed to fail. Nowadays, hardly ever can someone let go of it and go over to face their own fault; hardly ever can someone be brave enough to declare as German prime minister Kaul ever said “The buck stops here?” But we have to remember “A life is like a field of newly fallen snow where I choose to walk, the steps will show.” The other day, my book was stolen in the classroom when I left for answering a telephone. When I met Sue, I said, “I did such a stupid thing that-”instead of complaining ”the repulsive thief did.“ Now it is time for us to stop rescuing ourselves by weaving so many excuses. It is time we blame shifts resolve to begin with more sentences with “I did the stupidest thing”. Only when we do like this can we really start to learn from our mistakes. And we would really grow up.,Small Kicks on The StudentsStreet,2002级英语教育2班 陈冬苗 I often roam in the students street for pure fun. I suspect many of the students have rapport with me in this hobby. Feeling tired after a long time of study, I prefer to abandon the book for the moment and put myself into anther colorful and flavorful world. Stealing out the school gate, I instantly get refreshed. There are, of course, various vividness compared with the gray of the books, even as words are concerned: most of the small shops are named wonderfullyParallel, Shy She, Cool Boy, Blue Sky, etc. Decorated with cool or warm color, fashionable or classical pictures, upper-class or homelike settings, the shops here display a wonderful land of imagination of human beings. And as for the goods, God only knows how rich this street is. I believe every person from every stratum will manage to find his favorite from different shops, whose styles can be so easily distinguished by their decoration that one would never make a mistake in stepping into one. There are formal suits and leather shoes, miniskirts and south Korean modernstyled clothes, cosmetics and adornments in vogue, imaginative handiworks and DIY creations, super stars portraits and cartoon figures. However, I cant count out, just to mention what comes to my lips at once. What a customer needs to do is to make sure what he needs and prevent from being tempted by the variety and individuality of the goods.,If time permits, one can step into one of the shops, say a clothes or shoes one, and try a coat or a pair of shoes on, especially as peculiar as possible, and look himself in the mirror, tasting what he dare not do in everyday life, and unnecessarily worrying about others critics, as long as he doesnt pay attention to the shop assistants impatience. Then the flavor out of the shop along the street is necessarily another lure. I think only the cleaning woman can count out the sorts from the rubbish if she ever works out this math question. Maybe, there are no less than thirty. The sweet or the salty, the spicy or the sour, or even the bitter; the Sichuans flavor, the Shanxis, the Wuhans, or even the Xinjiangs, its up to you. However, the skill of choosing a more hygienic booth is another venture one would experience at the expense of his wallet and health. The just-smell-and-not-taste school seemed to be advocated in this street. If you defeat you greed, youll be satisfied at your perseverance. On the other hand, if you are conquered by the flavor, you will be content with it, just comforting yourself that next time you would never give in. After such a marvelous trip, hardly exists any boredom. By and large, it is one of the flavorings in my university life.,The Most Influential Person in My Life,2002级英语教育2班 林丽珍 Just like anyone elses, my life is influenced by many people. Then who is the most influential one? My answer is certainly to be “Ms He”. Ms He was my Chinese teacher when I was in junior middle school. She was very fat and wore a pair of thick glasses. So in fact, we didnt like her when she first appeared in our class. However, just as she began to speak, we were attracted. Different from other teachers, she was cordial and always smiled. Immediately we also found that she was knowledgeable. Since she had just graduated, she had little teaching experience. But this didnt matter. By her own means, she was able to teach us a lot. I know it later that she made great efforts on her work. For example, she often looked at herself in the mirror to exercise to control laugh in class. And for a girl who liked laughing very much, controlling laugh was difficult.,Besides, she was so young, amiable and unbiased that we liked to chat with her after class. She could understand us very well, even our early love. After patient listening, she would give us suggestions or ways to deal with things. Therefore, its absolutely true that Ms He won the respect of us all. We have graduated for several years, but we still miss her very much and often send our regards and wishes to her. Indeed I admire and even envy her. I think she is very successful and happy. So as early as my junior middle school days, I began to like her career. After university entrance examination, I chose English Teaching as my major. She has set a great example for me, and I would try my best to learn from her, not only in teaching, but also in human dignity.,Initiative in Courtship,2002级英语教育2班 陈秋燕 People regard it as a matter of normality if a man takes the initiative in courtship, but if a woman does that, she is asking for trouble. Traditionally, Chinese women should be stereotypically quiet, patient, and reserved, and to a large extent they were accessories to men. They didnt have the right to pursue their own true love and were always waiting for mens actions. With the improvement of womens status and their newly-gained independence, it seems that this attitude should have disappeared nowadays, however, it still exists today. There are evidences that amorous initiative is firmly reserved to men, and modern women, although not so subordinate as traditional women, are still in a passive position. It is because that the ambience of society doesnt encourage women to take actions, that men still to some extent hold traditional attitude towards women, and that women themselves also accept the unwritten roles. When referring to the issue of courtship, most of my male friends, though being college students, insist that initiative should be reserved to boys and girls should never be too positive, otherwise, it will scare away boys, that is, it is not suitable or reasonable for a girl to chase her affectionate boy. They even assume that even if a girl is cute enough to achieve her goal, she will not be really happy later on, because the boy will not cherish the love that isnt pursued by himself. So this initiative is boys privilege while girls even dont have the freedom of pursuing.,It is said that women hold up half the sky. However, this half sky is shaded with some black clouds, not really cleared up. Hopefully, we can see some light going through the black clouds, shining out over the world. One of my friends ever told me a story, which overturns this stereotype, about a brave young lady who had fallen in love with a boy, decided that she would take actions to show her attractions to him, not just waiting for nothing. With her love and perseverance, though there being so much external and internal pressure, she eventually succeeded in attracting the boy and became a heroine and a good example of the other girls who also saw the promising land from her. Hopefully, there will be many courageous women who try to break up the roles and the stereotypes to pursue their own happiness, making themselves the heroines.,A Nights Wait,2002级英语教育2班 王伟炜 Years ago, I was still a little girl and didnt have any worries. At least, I thought so. But what happened one summer night changed my idea. It happened like this. One summer night, my grandma and I sat in the yard to take some cool air. I still remember that it was a very beautiful night: the sky just like an endless dark-blue silk, decorated with the countless shining stars which were like the diamonds in the cloth; the wind stirred a few fine filaments of cloud and the moon gave out gentle light; the breeze stroked my face and the crickets sang songs by my ears. All of these made me intoxicated. My grandma, sitting by my side, was telling me some stories about the moon. The world was peaceful and quiet. Then, as I was so fascinated by the charming moon, I stretched out my finger, pointing to the moon, turned to my grandma and asked:“ Grandma, does somebody really live there?” Suddenly, grandma beat my finger down, stared at me, and said seriously:“ Dont point to the moon, never! Ever! If she gets angry, shell cut down your ears! Its anything but a joke. shell come to you tonight!“ I was greatly astonished, and had lost interest in the scene or the cool air. I went into my room and lay on the bed, turning over and over. It was the first night that I had known the taste of insomnia. I vaguely recalled that one of my kindergarten friends had come to school one day with his ear red and swelling, and seemed to have a wound on it. He told us it was because he had pointed to the moon and that was the punishment. That day we all laughed at him. But, now, it would be my turn. What would I be?,My whole mind was occupied by the scary thought. However, I didnt dare to tell my parents, because I thought they would not accept the fact that their daughter would become a one-eared or non-eared monster. Then, I began to think about the pointing. For the pointing, I have to suffer from a cut! The cut must be very very painful and would make me bleed a lot and even die! The damnable finger! Maybe I can make a deal with the moon-could she just take my finger away instead of the ear? Oh, no! Finger is also important to me.Could she be so kind to save my neck? But it seemed impossible; my grandma said she would come tonight! What shall I do! The whole night I was harasse
