A hot tear ran down his cheek. She trusted him. This was the first year she had left him alone for three hours between school and the time she got home from work. She had to work to buy his clothes and to pay for their food and for a place to live. He remembered the nice way she said, “You are a little man now, Joy.” It made him sad when his mothers words came back to him. She trusted him.Remembering this, he felt as if someone had stuck a sharp stick into his side. Her trust in him was all he could think about now. It drove everything else from his mind. “She trusted me.” He kept saying to himself. “She trusted me.” This was most important. Next to this, the pipe and its magic power meant nothing.Joy looked at the long shadows coming toward him. He now knew what he had to do. And he was in a hurry to get it done. When he took the pipe, he left the store with slow unsure steps. Now his feet were quick, decisive, taking him straight back to the store like an arrow. He was out of breath when he reached the store.Mr. Dow was just inside the door. The big man smiled. Joy wished he had not. Somehow, a bad friendly smile made it more difficult for Joy to do what he wanted to do. Joy was lost for a moment. His feet felt heavy. Suddenly, blindly, he held out the pipe. His voice struggled to come out from deep inside of the painful chest.“Mr. Dow,” he said at last, “I didnt mean to take it.”“Thanks, Joy.” Mr. Dow said as he gently took the pipe from the boys hand. “How about staying around and helping me close up the shop?”Joy felt Mr. Dow, s big hand on his shoulder. Its two hours of relaxation and escapism from real life. But when I kick back in my seat to enjoy the film and tuck into (大口吃) my box of popcorn, Im often irritated by seeing someone next to me texting on their mobile phone or worse still, talking to someone. Its no surprise that a proposal by a US cinema chain to let people use their phones during some film screenings was met with such anger, that the company had to withdraw the idea. People said it was the worst idea ever! Surely, going to watch the latest film is just that watching not multi-screening. And if youre out with a friend it seems very antisocial or just rude. I certainly get distracted(分心的) by the click-click on someones mobile keyboard as they text and the glow of the bright small phone screen why arent they concentrating on the big screen?! But with the availability of streaming films at home and cheap DVDs, cinemas are struggling to keep their customers. Some places now offer comfortable seats with free snacks and drinks so maybe trying to attract a younger audience by allowing the use of mobile phones is the way forward? A survey in 2012 found that a majority of 18-to-34-year-olds believed using social media while watching a movie would add to their experience. However, not every young person wants to multi-task at the movies. Many of us still get annoyed by the theatre staff who appear not to do anything about it. Of course, we could ask the offenders to turn their phones off but as Adam Aron, head of AMC Entertainment, said in Variety magazine, “when you tell a 22-year-old to turn off the phone, dont ruin the movie, they hear please cut off your left arm above the elbow.” Clearly this is not what I would like to see but if you want to use your mobile phone in the cinema that Im at, please dont sit next to me! What do you think is the right thing to do?28. The underlined word “irritated” in Paragraph 1 means _.A. terrified B. depressed C. annoyed D. embarrassed 29. Which of the following is True of the US cinema chains original advice?A. The advice was carried out smoothly.B. They permitted people to use the phone. C. The advice was very popular with people.D. They forbade people to use the phone. 30. What can we infer from Paragraph 3?A. Young people use their social media frequently.B. The cinema neednt worry about their customers.C. People prefer to watch films and DVD at home.D. Sending messages is the best experience for young people.31. What is the authors attitude towards multi-task at the movies?A. Sympathy. B. Encouragement. C. Enthusiasm. D. Disapproval.DFollowing the crowd may not always be in a persons best interest. But new research suggests that teens who go along with their friends may end up healthier as adults.Scientists have known that close friendships help boost health. Thats true for both teens and adults. The finding inspired Joseph Allen, a psychologist at the University of Virginia, and his team to study whether experiences during teen years would influence adult health. So they followed 171 teens, starting when the kids were just 13. They interviewed each one every year for five years, and also spoke to these teens closest friends, who provided additional information about the quality of their friendships. The same 171 people were interviewed again at ages 25, 26 and 27. This time, the questions surveyed each persons overall health. When the researchers analyzed the data they found a strong connection between a teens behavior and adult health. Teens who had close friends grew up to be the healthier adults. Whether teens held back their feelings or expressed them to a close friends also influenced later health. Those who held back were more likely to be sick as adults. The connection held up even after the scientists accounted for other possible influences on health. Weight, family income and drug use were all examined. So were mental health issues, such as anxiety and depression. And in these people, such other factors did not explain adult health as well as teen friendships did.Going along with the crowd may have benefits, says Allen, but there are also drawbacks. Teens who are more independent tend to do better at school and work. And peer pressure may lead some kids to engage in risky behavior, such as smoking, drinking or using drugs. Dealing with it is an ongoing challenge, Allen acknowledges. “Finding the right balance is the key. Teens shouldnt lose heart for not finding this easy.” And, he adds, “Parents need to be understanding about the pressures teens face.”32. Where can you probably read this passage? A. Science fiction B. Health columnC. Fashion magazine D. Entertainment newspaper33. We can learn from Allens study that _.A. many other factors have a greater influence on adult health than teen friendshipsB. mental health issues have nothing to do with adult healthC. the same 171 teens were interviewed each year from 13 to 27D. the teens who couldnt express themselves grew up to be unhealthier34. According to what Allen said, we can know that _.A. in order to do better at school, teens should not follow the crowdB. though its challenging for teens to deal with peer pressure, they should not give upC. teens will engage in smoking, drinking or using drugs when facing peer pressureD. parents should understand their teens and stop them going with friends35. What can be inferred from the passage?A. There is nothing bad for teens to follow the crowd.B. Close friendships are the most important for peoples health.C.
