Apparatus and Reagents(a) Spectrophotometer.See974.28A(b) (see 15.2.08).(b) Zinc phenolsulfonate standard solution.10 mg/L in ca0.1MNaOH.Dissolve100mgzincphenolsulfonate,NFXI(equiva-lentto62.67mgphenolsulfonicacid),in100mLH2O.Dilute10mLaliquot to 100 mL with H2O. Pipet 10 mL aliquot into 100 mL volu-metricflask,add4mLfreshlyprepared10%NaOHsolution,anddi-lute to volume with H2O.B. Determination(a) In presence of sulfated surface-active agents.Accuratelyweigh test portion containing 510 mg phenolsulfonic acid into250 mL Erlenmeyer. Add 10 mL H2O and 2 mL HCl, connect toH2O-cooled condenser, and reflux 0.5 h. Cool to room temperature,transfer quantitatively to 100 mL separator with 20 mL H2O, andproceed as in (b), beginning “extract with three 30 mL portionsCHCl3.”(b) In absence of sulfated surface-active agents.Accuratelyweigh, in weighing bottle, test portion containing 510 mgphenolsulfonic acid. Transfer quantitatively to 100 mL separatorwith aid of 30 mL H2O. Acidify with HCl and extract with three30mLportionsCHCl3.DiscardCHCl3extracts.Filteraqueoussolu-tion through moistened quantitative paper into 100 mL volumetricflaskanddilutetovolumewithH2O.Pipet10mLaliquotoftestsolu-tion into 100 mL volumetric flask, neutralize to litmus paper withfreshlyprepared10%NaOHsolution,add4mLexcess,anddilutetovolume with H2O.
