What difficulties did they meet on the way and how did they overcome them?,First, the time was limited. The children would die if their treatment was delayed too long. Second, at that time, the sea was frozen and the only two planes had been stored, nothing got to Nome quickly. Third, The Arctic winter was very cold and there were terrible storms.,Traffic problems: The sea frozen; the only two planes stored; no quick traffic,A train took the medicine from Anchorage to Nenana; A relay of dog teams between Nenana and Nome,6. And the patients there were saved.,At last the children of Nome were saved And a bronze sculpture of a dog was placed in New York Citys Central Park: a memorial to all who risked their lives to save those of others.,1. Can you give other examples of relays?,A relay is a race in which each member only runs a short distance and then hands some object over to the next person, who runs to bring it to the next, and so on. Another example of a relay it the Olympic Torch Relay.,5.Why was a relay of dog sleds chosen as the best transport from Nenana to Nome?,The choice fell on dog sleds because the seas were frozen, planes could not fly, there was no rail connection and the snowfall made the reads too dangerous for cars. Dog sleds were also the fastest way.,Pre-writing,Ingredients of story-writing: Story structure: Good stories have a beginning, a middle and an end. Main character: Who is your story about?,Setting: Where does your story take place? Start by asking yourself some questions: Where dose the story take place in space, in China, in your school or someplace completely from your imagination?,When does the story take place in the past, at present or in the future? Has the setting helped develop the main characters personality? How does the setting impact your main characters problem?,Writing,Turn to P54 and you may use the pictures to help you in your writing. 1. What happened to the child? 2. Where would the train take the package to and what was in the package? 3. What did the dog sled team do? 4. How were the dogs like after a long distance relay race?,Sample writing: Dr Curtis Welch discovered that some children in Nome had a terrible disease for which he had no medicine. Nome is 1,000 miles away from the nearest hospital. A few days later, the illness was diagnosed as diphtheria, which spread very fast. This disease would produce a powerful poison that would kill the patient. Dr Welch didnt have enough,vaccine for hundreds of people, but a hospital in Anchorage had a good supply of 300,000 units. The question was how to deliver it to Nome fast. Unfortunately, the sea was frozen, while the only two planes had been stored. They came up with a good idea and twenty drivers decided to carry the vaccine in a relay dog race. Firstly, the doctors in Anchorage,wrapped the medicine in a quilt and tied it up. A train took the packet from Anchorage to Nenana. Secondly, the twenty drivers delivered the medicine from Nenana to Nome. Finally, they went through the difficulties and delivered the vaccine in time. The children of Nome were saved.,Language points,1.
