The girl then is married to a rich young man, Tom Buchanan.,Determined to win his lost love back, Gatsby engages himself in bootlegging and other “shady” activities, thus earning enough money to buy a magnificent imitation villa. There he spreads dazzling parties every weekend in the hope of alluring Daisy to come.,With the help of Nick, the Gatsbys neighbor and Daisys cousin, Gatsby meets Daisy again, only to find that the woman before him is not quite the ideal love of his dreams. A sense of loss and disillusion comes over him. He still insists and wants to back into the past. Then Daisy kills a woman in an accident, but Tom tells George that Gatsby was the owner of the car. So Gatsby is shot and the Buchanan go away.,Main characters,Nick Carraaway(narrator)-a bond salesman, and neighbor of Gatsby, lives in West Egg Jay Gatsby-protagonist of the novel, a young, mysterious millionaire, lives in West Egg Daisy Buchanan-Nicks cousin, wife of Tom, once had a romantic relationship with Gatsby, attractive but self-absorded, lives in East Egg Tom Buchanan-Daisys husband, Nicks college friend, an arrogant, hypocritical bully, lives in East Egg,Jordan Barker-Daisys friend, a woman with whom Nick becomes romantically, a golfer Myrtle Wilson-Toms lover, possesses a fierce vitality and looks for a way to improve her situation, lives in the valley of ashes George Wilson-Myrtles husband, lifeless, owners of a auto shop at the edge of the valley of ashes, extremely grief after Myrtle is killed,Analysis of major characters,Jay Gatsby He is famous for the lavish parties he throws every Saturday night, but no one knows where he comes from, what he does, or how he made his fortune. He appears in Chapter 1, speaks until Chapter 3. The reader learns he is in love with Daisy in Chapter 4, he reunions with Daisy in a rainy day in Chapter 5. Gatsby tells his childhood and personal history in Chapter 6. The proof of his criminal dealings arises in Chapter 7. He is killed in Chapter 8, and Chapter 9 is about his funeral.,Gatsby creates his his own character, even changing his name from James Gatz to Jay Gatsby to represent his reinvention of himself. As his relentless quest for Daisy demonstrates, Gatsby has an extraordinary ability to transform his hopes and dreams into ability, this talent for self-invention is what gives Gatsby his quality of “greatness”. Gatsby is an innocent, hopeful young man, he is a loyal and good-hearted man. His optimism and vitality-something about him seems remarkably hopeful, and this belief in brilliance of the future impresses readers. However, he is lonely and sensitive to his status. Acutely aware of his poverty, Gatsby develops a powerful obsession with amassing wealth and status.,Daisy Buchanan,Daisy is a beautiful young woman from Louisville, she is Nicks cousin and Gatsbys love. Daisy promised to wait for Gatsby, but in 1919 she chose to marry Tom, a young man from a solid, aristocratic family who could promise her a wealthy lifestyle. To Gatsby, Daisy represents the paragon of perfection-she has the aura of charm, wealth, sophistication, grace, and aristocracy that attracted him to her. In reality, she is beautiful and charming, but also fickle, shallow, bored, and sardonic. She proves her real nature when she chooses Tom over Gatsby in Chapter7,then allows Gatsby to take the blame for killing Myrtle. Finally rather than attend Gatsbys funeral, Daisy and Tom move away, leaving no address. Daisy is in love with money, ease, and material luxury. She is capable of affection, she seems to love Gatsby, but not of sustained loyalty or care. She is indifferent even to her daughter, seldom discussing her. She represents the amoral values of the aristocratic East Egg.,Nick Carraway,Nick, a young man from Minnesota, travels to New York in 1922 to learn the bond business. He is tolerant, open-minded, quiet, and a good listener, and as a result, others tend to talk to him and tell him their secrets. Gatsby, in particular, comes to trust him and treat him as a confidant. Nick plays a role inside the narrative, he evidences a strongly mixed reaction to life on the East Coast, one that creats a powerful internal conflict that he does not resolve. On the one hand, Nick is attracted to the fast-paced, fun-driven lifestyle of New York. On the other hand, he finds that lifestyle grotesque and damaging.,This inner conflict is symbolized throughout the book by Nicks romantic affair with Jordan Baker. He is attracted to her vivacity and her sophistication just as he is repelled by her dishonesty and her lack of consideration for other people. Nick states that there is a “quality of distortion”to life in New York, and this lifestyle makes him lose his equilibrium. After presiding over the Gatsbys funeral, he returns to Minnesota in search of a quieter life structured by more traditional moral values.,Writing techniques,1 Movement of steps and shift of scenes( 移步换景) 描写景物时,人走景移,随着观察点的变换,不断展现新画面。,Chapter 3 We passed Port Roosevelt, where there was a glimpse of red-belted ocean-going ships, and sped along a cobbled slum lined with the dark, undeserved saloons of the faded-gilt nineteen-hundreds. Then the valley of ashes opened out on both sides of us, and I had a glimpse of Mrs. Wilson straining at the garage pump with panting vitality as we went by.,Chapter 5 Two oclock and the whole corner of the peninsuia was blazing with light, which fell unreal on the shrubbery and made thin elongating glints upon the roadside wires. Turn a corner, I saw that it was Gatsbys house, lit from tower to cellar.,2 Multiple point of view Chapter 5 No amount of fire or freshness can challenge what a man will store up in his ghostly heart. An hour later the front door opened nervously,4 Contrast(对比) 对比,是把具有明显差异、矛盾和对立的双方安排在一起,进行对照比较的表现手法。 Chapter 2 “Is that a boy or a girl?” she asked delicately. “That dog? That dogs a boy.” “Its a bitch,” said Tom decisively.,5 Symbolize(象征) 象征手法是根据事物之间的某种联系,借助某人某物的具体形象(象征体),以表现某种抽象的概念、思想和情感。它可以使文章立意高远,含蓄深刻。 The green light, the valley of ashes, the eyes of Doctor T. J Eckleburg, the rain in chapter 5, gold, silver color等。 ,Paragraphs appreciation,1. And I hope shell be a foolthats the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool.(Chapter 1, 倒数第35段),2. It was one of those rare smiles with a quality of eternal reassurance in it, that you may come across four or five times in life. It facedor seemed to facethe whole external world for an instant, and then concentrated on you with an irresistible prejudice in your favor. It understood you just so far as you wanted to be understood, believed in you as you would like to believe in yourself, and assured you that it had precisely the impression of you that, at your best, you hoped to convey.(Chapter 3, 盖茨比表明身份之后),3. The truth was that Jay Gatsby of West Egg, Long Island, sprang from his Platonic conception of himself. He was a son of Goda phrase which, if it means anything, means just thatand he must be about His Fathers business, the service of a vast, vulgar, and meretricious beauty. So he invented just the sort of Jay Gatsby that a seventeenyearold boy would be likely to invent, and to this conception he was faithful to the end.(Chapter 6, 第7段),4. Thats my Middle Westnot the wheat or the prairies or the lost Swede towns, but the
