He looked behind him, and saw a young man whom he had never seen before. “How dare you hit me like that?” shouted Wilson. The young man said he had mistaken Wilson for a friend of his and that he thought Wilson was making a lot of noise about nothing. This insult (侮辱) made Wilson even angrier, of course, and he at once decided to bring the young man before a judge. Now, the judge, who heard the case was a friend of the young mans fathers, and, although he pretended to be quite fair, he was thinking about what he could do to protect the young man from being punished while at the same time not to be appearing unfair. Finally he said to Wilson, “I understand your feelings in this matter very well. Would you be satisfied if I let you hit the young man as he hit you?” Wilson said he would not be. The young man had insulted him and should be properly punished. “Well, then,” said the judge to the young man, “I order you to pay ten coins to Wilson.” Ten coins was very little for such a crime, but the young man did not have it with him, so the judge allowed him to go and get it. Wilson waited for him to return with the money. He waited an hour, and then two hours, while the judge took care of other business. When it was nearly time for the court to close, Wilson chose a moment when the judge was especially busy, came up quietly and hit him hard on the back of the neck. Then he said to him, “I am sorry, but I cant wait any longer. And now his army was marching into some parts of Europe. He must be in the prime (顶峰) of his career. One day Hitler went to an exhibition where the works of school children were on show. He seemed to have great interest in the exhibitsinventions as well as carvings, drawings. After having walked around the hall and examined everything, he said he was ready to meet the young artists. And soon a group of children came into the room to salute (向敬礼) him. “Well, well. You did very good work.” Nodded Hitler in satisfaction. “I promise on my honor Id satisfy you with whatever you want. Whatd you wish to be if I were your father?” “A sailor sailing the sea” one of the boys answered. “Good. Ill have you join my navy and some day you will rule the oceans.” “Ask for anything? Whatd you wish to be if I were your father?” he asked a second boy. “A painter as great as Rembruant.” “Good. You are to be sent to the Fine Art School and surely you will make an even greater painter.” When Hitler caught sight of a sad-looking boy he frowned (皱眉), then quickly forced a smile, “There my boy, in spite of my point of view towards the Jews (犹太人), Id do you a favor and your dream will come true. One is born able to make a noise. I have heard babies cry in America and in China. I cant tell any difference. But when I hear someone from America speak English and hear someone speak Chinese, I can tell you there are a lot of differences. I believe a common problem with Chinese students learning English is that they were not taught to think in English. They have an idea spoken in English and want to translate the idea into Chinese, Then they think in Chinese of the proper reply and translate it into English. After a long period of speaking the language, one begins to think in the foreign language naturally. You will learn faster if you begin to think in English at the very beginning of your study. Many students ask me: What can I do to improve my spoken English? My reply is: The more English you speak, the better English you will speak. There are many things you can do to improve your spoken English. Of course, the best way is to live where English is spoken as a language of the country.49 The cries of American and Chinese babies are _.A. different B. the sameC. not like each otherD. like each other50 The underlined sentence ( in Paragraph 2 ) means that _.A. some teachers didnt teach students to think in EnglishB. teachers never gave the students the way of learning EnglishC. students didnt remember the way teachers taught themD. teachers didnt want their students to think in English51 The underlined word “they” ( in Paragraph 2 ) refers to “_”.A. Chinese studentsB. English studentsC. Chinese teachersD. English teachers52 According to the article, which of the following is TRUE?A. You must think in English all the time.B. If you translate a sentence into Chinese, you should think about the meaning of the sentence in Chinese carefully first.C. After speaking English for a long time, you may probably think in English naturally.D. The best way of learning English is to live in America.(D)Whats A Real Friend? You can have the same neighbors for years. You love them or you think you love them. And you hope that they love you. But do you ever really understand them? Charlie Kemp and his family lived next door to me for 15 years. We were good friends all the time. I enjoy friendship. I think its the best thing in the world. And friendship with the Kemps was easy because they seemed to welcome it. They were interesting and clever people. Their house caught fire twice, and twice the whole family slept in mine. They are always losing things like money, keys and watches. Pictures fell off the walls, the children fell out of bed I was their neighbor and their friend. Life was always interesting, never dull. Best of all, I liked the whole family. One day, I lit a fire in the garden to burn some rubbish. After some time Charlie Kemp came out of his house and walked up the road. “Morning, Charlie,” I said, “lovely day, isnt it?” He smiled at me and nodded. I went on with my work.Twenty minutes later, a policeman arrived. He walked into my garden and said, “Youll have to put out that fire. Your neighbor has complained (抱怨) to us.
