New research, however, has showed that the worlds largest land animals have a secret trick of controlling their body temperatures.Scientists have long been puzzled by temperature regulation(调节)in elephants. Generally, animals with large bodies tend to hold more heat because, pared to their size, they have a small surface area for heat to escape from. Elephants, with their heavyweight frames, would appear to be at a disadvantage in the heat of their African and Asian habitats, especially because they have thick fur to protect them from bushes and trees.Scientists thought that these creatures, which weigh up to 13 tons when fullygrown, grow large ears to help them stay cool. The skin on the ears is thinner, so blood which flows into them cools down more easily. But findings by researchers at two universities in Vienna have showed that elephants are also able to cool down by increasing the blood flow to skin patches(斑) in other parts of their bodies. The researchers studied six African elephants at Vienna Zoo as they moved between outdoor and indoor environments to see how the temperature on their skin surface would change. They found up to 15 “hot spots” all over an elephants body surface, in addition to large patches on the ears. The study shows how these patches expand as the air temperature increases and more blood flows nearer to the skin surface. Other experiments show that elephants in the wild use the same “windows” to control their body temperature.Elephants have two additional ways to stay cool: flapping(拍打)the ears and bathing. Together with these tricks, the skin hot spots allow the animals to keep their body temperature always at about 36 degreesone degree less than humans.21What can we know about the elephants?AThey can weigh up to 3 tons when fullygrown.B They live in cool areas in Africa and Asia.C They have thick fur to protect them.D They are afraid of water and rivers.22The function of the thinner skin on elephants ears is to_.Akeep sensitive hearing B help hold more heatC drive away insects D control their body temperature23The new research_.A studied six Asian elephantsBproved that scientists earlier beliefs were totally trueC aimed to discover the elephants disadvantagesD studied elephants in a zoo and in the wildBHere are Travelbags, weve seen the world-we want you to as well. It is a quiet town, perfect for raising children away from the rapid pace of the city. However, besides hours of homework, many Ridgewood children have too many afterschool activitiesfrom swimming to piano classes. Some kids pare their life to that of a New York general manager who has an 80hour workweek.Childrens schedules filled with homework and activities made a lot of townspeople worried, so the town decided to start a movement called “Ridgewood Family NightReady, Set, Relax!” The mayor (市长) made a public statement, calling for a townwide night for families to do nothing. And schools and clubs agreed to support the movement so families could relax and get together. Some parents like to talk about their childhood, one without so many scheduled afterschool activities. As kids, they just went out to play with neighborhood friends after school. However, almost all these parents take their children to their regularly scheduled activities. These fathers and mothers feel it is their duty to make sure their children are prepared to survive in todays highpressure work environment. They are afraid that their children cant enter the “right” universities and wont succeed in a more and more petitive world. However, it seems that Family Night worked, at least to a certain degree. Cars moved freely around Ridgewoods normally busy downtown streets. Some families ate supper together for the first time in months. One family watched home movies of when the children were little, baked cookies and played games together. At first, some people were excited that they could take back their lives. But sadly, few families now believe that one night will change them. Nearly all of the townspeople are sure that they will fall back into the old habit.28Which of the following can be used to describe the life of Ridgewood children?A Really exiting. B Terribly busy.C Quite peaceful. DVery relaxing.29How can people benefit from Family Night?A They can learn and share knowledge.BThey have more time to discuss family matters.C They can rest and enjoy family time.D They have enough time to talk about schoolwork.30What is most important for kids in the eyes of Ridgewood parents?A Spending a happy childhood.B Working hard for a better future. CDoing things at their own pace.D Enjoying a more relaxed lifestyle.31How do most Ridgewood people look at Family Night?AIt may help break kids bad habits. B It will help take back their lives.C It cant be accepted by the public. D It wont change their lifestyle. DIn the United States, it is important to be on time, or punctual, for an appointment, a class, a meeting, etc. However, this may not be true in all countries. An American professor discovered the difference while teaching a class in a Brazilian(巴西的) university. The two-hour class was scheduled to begin at 10A.M .and end at 12. On the first day, when the professor arrived on time, no one was in the classroom. Many students came after 10:30A.M. Two students came after 11A.M. Although all the students greeted the professor as they arrived, few apologized(道歉)for their lateness. Were these students being rude?He decided to study the students behavior. The professor talked to American and Brazilian students about lateness in both an informal(非正式的) and a formal situation: at a lunch with a friend and in a university class, respectively. He gave them an example and asked them how they would react, If they had a lunch appointment with a friend, the average American student defined(定义) lateness as 19 minutes after the agreed time. On the other hand, the average Brazilian student felt the friend was late after 33minutes.In an American university, students are expected to arrive at the appointed hour. In contrast, in Brazil, neither the teacher nor the students always arrive at the appointed hour. Classes not only begin at the scheduled time in the United States, but also end at the scheduled time. In the Brazilian class, only a few students left the class at 12:00; many remained past 12:30 to discuss the class and ask more questions. While arriving late may not be very important in Brazil, neither is staying late.32What is the main idea of this passage? _A The importance of being on time differs among cultures.BIt is important to be on time for class in the United States.C People learn the importance of time only from their own culture.D Students being late for class should explain the reason to their teacher.33The underlined word punctual most probably means _ .A 1eaving soon after class B being on timeC arriving a few minutes late Ding early34Why did the professor study the Brazilian students behavior? _AHe wanted to make the students e on time later.B He felt angry at the students rudeness.C He felt puzzled at the students being late.D He wanted to collect data for one of his studies.35It can be inferred from the professors study of lateness in the informal situation that _ .A American students will bee impatient if their friend is five minutes lateB being late in one culture may not be considered so rude in another cultureCneither Brazilian nor American students like being late in social gatheringsD Brazilian students will not e thirty-three minutes after the agreed time第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。How to Keep a Relationship Healthy and StrongAre you new to experiencing relationships? Well, let me give you advice on having a healthy and possibly long-term relationship.36Do not hide things from them, do not lie. Dont be afraid to say things that arent very flattering about yourself. Getting them to trust you is the most important element in any relationship. If theres no trust, theres nothing there. So please be honest and theyll learn to open up to you.Make sure you give them respect. Now respect isnt just simply treating her or him nicely. Theres a lot more to it. You have to learn to adjust to their liking. 37Dont just think about yourself, think about what your partner needs out of it as well.38 Always be willing to help them and give them honesty and positivity at the same time. Make them feel you are someone they can really count on and build a future with. This is an important step in a relationship. Your partner has to be able to count on you when needed.Make sure you have a good sense of humor with them. Laughter is the key to happiness. Laugh a lot with them, joke with them. Laughter may seem silly, but its the secret to a lot in life. It will keep the sparks alive. 39Make sure the munication is good. This goes along with trust, but always municate how you feel, even if it s something that upsets you. Instead of screaming, talk to them.40Its important to municate this to them, not keep it bottled up.A If they did something that made you unhappy, tell them about it in a respectful mannerB Show them your personality.C Be an honest person with them.D Make sure you are reliable to your partner.E.Laughter keeps the relationship strong and lasting.F. Dont start to neglect them and make them feel unwanted.G. Basically, learn to study your partners moods, wants and needs.第三节 完形填空(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分)Douglas was my cousin.
