According to kidsandcars, org, an average of 37 young children per year die of car heat in the US, when they are accidentally left in a hot vehicle. For Bishop Curry, a fifth grader from McKinney, Texas, one such incident hit close to home. A six-month-old baby from his neighborhood died after hours in a hot car. After hearing about her death, Curry decided that something needed to be done.Young Curry, who turned 11 this year, has always had a knack for inventing things, and he drew up a sketch(草图) of a device he called Oasis. The device would attach to car seats and watch the temperature inside the car. If it reached a certain temperature in the car, and the device sensed a child in the car seat, it would begin to circulate cool air. Curry also designs the device using GPS and Wi-Fi technology, which would alarm the childs parents and, if there was no response from them, the police.Currys father believes that the invention has potential. The cool thing about Bishops thinking is none of this technology is new, he said. We feel like the way hes thinking and bining all these technologies will get to production faster. His father even introduced the device to Toyota, where he works as an engineer. The pany was so impressed that they sentCurry and his father to a car safety conference in Michigan. In January, Currys father launched a campaign for the invention. They hope to raise money to finalize the patent, build models, and find a manufacturer. Their goal was $20,000, but so many people believed in Oasis potential that they have raised more than twice that-over $46,000.Currys father remembers the first time he saw his sons sketch. I was so proud of him for thinking of a solution, he said. We always just plain about things and rarely offer solutions.24. What inspired Curry to invent Oasis? A. His narrow escape from death after being locked in a car.B. His knowledge of many childrens death because of car heat.C. The death of his neighbors baby after being left in a hot car.D. The injury of 37 children in his school in a car accident.25. What would Oasis do if it was hot in a car with a child?A. It would inform the parents or even the police.B. It would pump out the hot air in the car.C. It would sound the alarm attached to the car.D. It would get the window open to save the child.26. Thats according to a first-ever study paring prehistoric(史前的) bones to those of living people. The finding suggests a revision of history- the everyday lives of prehistoric women were filled with hard labor, rather than just sitting at home doing lighter tasks while the men struggled and fought for life.“Before the study, there are no clear records describing how our ancient ancestors lived. It can be easy to forget that bone is a living tissue, one that responds to the difficulties we put our bodies through,” said lead author Alison Macintosh. “Physical force and muscle activity both put pressure on the bone. The bone reacts by changing in shape, thickness and other aspects over time.”Previous studies only pared female bones to contemporary male bones, the researchers said-and thats a problem, because the response of male bones to stress and change is much bigger than that of women. For instance, as humans moved from a hunter-gatherer lifestyle constantly on the move to a more settled agrarian(农耕的) one, changes can be observed in the structure of the shinbone(胫骨)- and these changes were much more evident in men. However, a parison of the bones of prehistoric women to the bones of living female athletes can help us work out a more accurate picture of what those prehistoric women were doing. By analyzing the bones of living people and paring them to the ancient bones, we can start to explain the kinds of labor our ancestors were reforming, Macintosh said. What they found was that womens leg strength hasnt changed a great deal, but their arms used to be very powerful. Prehistoric women, the researchers found, had arm strength 11-16 percent stronger than those of modern rowers, and 30 percent stronger than those of non-athletes.28. What does the study tell about prehistoric women? A. They were stronger than men. B. They had lighter bones than men. C. They did tough tasks as the men. D. They spent most time staying at home.29. What problem did previous studies on prehistoric bones have? A. They lacked enough parison. B. They only studied men s bones. C. They focused little on bones. D. They ignored the lifestyles.30. What does the underlined word that in Paragraph 3 refer to? A. Bones structure. B. Bones thickness. C. Bones response to stress. D. Bones stress from hard labor.31. What can we learn from the last paragraph? A. Its still hard to explain our ancestors lifestyle. B. Prehistoric women went through much suffering. C. Womens arms have bee much stronger over time. D. Prehistoric women are stronger than contemporary females.DA small insect is getting a lot of attention in the United States. The rusty patched bumblebee (大黄蜂) is the first of its species to be declared endangered in the lower 48 statesmeaning every state except Alaska and Hawaii. The rusty patched bumblebee is named for a rust-colored line on its back. The U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced this month it was adding the bee to its endangered species list. The insects are on the brink of extinction, according to the service. It said the bees were once found in 28 states. But there now are only small populations remaining in 13 states. The government agency will make a plan to help the dying bees recover. The agency said that such a plan might help other insects, like butterflies. U.S. officials think land owners can take small steps to help the rusty patched bumblebee. They say land owners can be friendlier towards bees by using native plants in their gardens. The insects directly fertilize many kinds of fruit and vegetable crops. And they fertilize grain crops used to feed cattle and milk cows. It costs billions of dollars to duplicate the job the bees do for free. Land owners are also being urged to cut back on their use of pesticide products. The officials also suggest that gardeners leave their plants alone at the end of the summer instead of cutting them. That way, the bees will have a place to live over the winter. The Fish and Wildlife Service says the rusty patched bumblebee was added to the endangered species list partly because of habitat loss. Other reasons were disease, pesticides and climate change. Officials are worried that other bees will suffer, too. Another species of bees in Hawaii is also endangered. 32. How many states declared the rusty patched bumblebee endangered? A. 13. B. 28. C. 48. D. 50. 33. Which one is harmful to the rusty patched bumblebee? A. Planting native plants. B. Reducing the use of pesticide products. C. Leaving plants alone. D. Cutting out plants regularly. 34.
