Having no questionsCThe average person learns most of the 30 00040 000 words whose meanings he or she recognizes by hearing them or getting familiar with them in the context or simply absorbing them without conscious effort. The best way to build a good vocabulary, therefore, is to read a great deal and to participate in a lot of good talks. There are relatively few words that we learn permanently by purposefully referring to dictionaries or keeping word lists. However, even those extra few are of value, and no one will make a mistake by working on developing a larger vocabulary. Here are some suggestions of how to do it. Read plenty of good books. When you e across a new word, or a new meaning of an old word, stop and see if you can understand it from its context. If you cant, and if you can manage without interrupting the thought of the book too much, look it up in a dictionary or ask somebody and then repeat its meaning to yourself a couple of times. If you are really conscientious(认真的), write the word and its meaning in a personal vocabulary list preferably using it in a sentence, or you can keep a special vocabulary notebook. Go over the list from time to time. Further, try to use a new word in writing or conversation a few times over the next several days. Listen to good talks and be alert to new words you hear or to new meanings of words you already know. Then treat them just as you treat the new words you read. Learn and be alert to the parts of words: prefixes, suffixes and roots. Knowing them enables you to make intelligent guesses about the meaning of words. If you are studying a foreign language, be alert to words in that language which relate to words in English. English has inherited(继承) or borrowed much of its vocabulary of 500 000600 000 words from Latin, Greek, French, Spanish and German. 28. When you meet a new word in reading, what should you do? A.Guess its meaning.B. All of the above. C.Look it up in a dictionary. D.Ask somebody.29. According to this passage, the best way to build a good vocabulary is _. A. to remember a lot B. to read a great deal C. to take part in a lot of good talks D. both B and C 30. The phrase “be alert to” in the third paragraph may best be replaced by “_”. A. pay attention to B. look at C. write down D. learn by heart 31. In the fourth paragraph, the word “them” refers to _. A. suffixes B. prefixes C. the parts of words D. rootsD There is no denying that some people live to be older than others. Followed are the standard explanations: keeping a moderate diet, engaging in regular exercise, etc. But what effect does your personality have on your longevity (长寿)? Are there any kinds of personalities contributing to longer lives? A new study in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society looked at these questions by examining the personality characteristics of 246 children of people who had lived to be at least 100. According to the study, those who live the longest are more outgoing, more active and less neurotic(神经质的)than other people. Long-living women are also more likely to be sympathetic and cooperative than women with a normal life span. These findings are in agreement with what you would expect from the evolutionary theory: those who like to make friends and help others can gather enough resources to make it through tough times. Interestingly, however, other characteristics that you might consider advantageous had no impact on whether study participants were likely to live longer. Those who were more self-disciplined, for instance, were no more likely to live to be very old. Also, being open to new ideas had no relationship to long life, which might explain all those bad-tempered old people who are fixed in their ways. Whether you can successfully change your personality as an adult is the subject of a longstanding psychological debate. But the new paper suggests that if you want long life, you should strive to be as outgoing as possible. Unfortunately, another recent study shows that your mothers personality may also help determine your longevity. That study looked at nearly 28, 000 Norwegian mothers and found that those moms who were more anxious, depressed and angry were more likely to feed their kids unhealthy diets. Patterns of childhood eating can be hard to break when were adults, which may mean that kids of depressed moms end up dying younger. Personality isnt destiny, and everyone knows that individuals can learn to change. But both studies show that long life isnt just a matter of your physical health but of your mental health.32.The purpose of the study in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society is .A. to see whether peoples personality affects their life span B. to find out if ones lifestyle has any effect on their healthC. to investigate the role of exercise in living a long lifeD. to examine all the factors contributing to longevity33. What does the author imply about outgoing and sympathetic people?A. They have a good understanding of evolution. B. They are better at negotiating an agreement.C. They are more likely to get over hardship. D. They generally appear more resourceful.34. What finding of the study might prove somewhat out of our expectation?A. Easy-going people can also live a relatively long life.B. Such characteristics as self-discipline have no effect on longevity.C. Advantageous personality characteristics actually vary with times.D. Readiness to accept new ideas helps one enjoy longevity.35.What is the main idea of this passage?A.Anger and depression cut ones life span short. B.Health is in large part related to ones lifestyle.C. Personality plays a decisive role in longevity. D. Luckily, here are 4 tips to help form positive patterns.1. Self-awarenessWhen a negative thought pops into your mind, immediately correct it. Think of something pleasant before returning. You have to take this seriously because negative people can and will pull you into the quicksand (困境).3. Dont try to change plainersIf you find yourself trapped in a group of plainers in a meeting or at a social event, simply choose silence. Let their words bounce (弹起) off you while you think of something else. Attempting to stop the plaining can make you a target. 39 If someone says, “I hate Mondays, weekends are too short,” try to think, “Im glad I rested up over the weekend, so Im ready to make some improvement on that big project.”4. 40 When someone is shouting at you angrily, throw the responsibility back at them by asking, “So what do you intend to do about it?” In most cases, plainers dont really want a solution. They just want to speak them out. If you make them aware that they themselves have to find the solutions, they will leave you alone and find someone else to plain to. If so, you will be happy.A. Find solutionsB. You have got a lot of pany.C. Change responsibility D. By doing this, it will lead to positive behaviors.E. Whenever possible, escape from negative conversations.F.
