During the early 1920s, John Logie Baird had a small laboratory in the seaside town of Hastings. It was in that laboratory that he first succeeded in projecting a moving figure across the walls.Unfortunately, during a later experiment he got a shock. Not only did this leave him shaken, but it also blew out the fuse(保险丝) box in the entire building. The owner of the house had been suspicious of the strange goings on in the curious Scottish mans apartment and he was politely asked to leave. After that he moved to a department in Soho, London and continued his experiments.Success finally smiled on him and on October 25, 1925 he was able to transmit his first moving image. This was the first time that any such success had been achieved. Unfortunately, his eyes were the only ones to witness it at the time. He called his new invention “the televisor”. On June 16, 1926 he showed his first work to an audience of interested witnesses. But none of them imagined just what an impact his invention would have on the modern world.Over the following years, Baird worked hard for further improvement. He managed to transmit images over longer distances, achieving the first transatlantic broadcast in 1928. He became the pioneer of color television, too. He showed the first experimental color television images as early as 1928. By 1930 he had managed to develop a system for broadcasting simultaneous (同时发生的) sound along with the images. Television had truly been born. Baird continued to make many important contributions to the development of television. In 1944 he presented the first color television set to the world. He died on June 14, 1946. His invention pletely transformed how we municate, how we see each other and the world and how we spend our time.24. My best friend, Dusty, also sat in an office at a puter all day. We often talked about what a waste it seemed to be, spending our time inside in front of a puter all day long. I ended up leaving my job, and so did Dusty. Neither one of us are sitting in an office all day. Last week, Dusty came to my home and declared, “Im going to travel.”Of course, traveling is exciting. Its getting to experience new things, getting to be a slightly different version of ourselves, but I think the point is more about the mindset(心态)that it allows for than the actual reality that es with it. Waking up every day with a sense of excitement for the unknown. Approaching each interaction during the day with a sense of wonder. Not thinking about yesterday or tomorrow, and just about whatevers right in front you. However, the thing is, we dont need to bein transitto be able to approach our days this way. It is possible for me to be living my normal life and be excited for the unknown of the day. I meet new people and do new things very day. Yes, they might be in Santa Monica, a few blocks from my apartment, but whats the difference between a new person here and new person in Australia?I read an Alan Watts quote recently, and it goes as follows:“If I ask you what you did, saw, heard, smelled, touched and tasted yesterday, I am likely to get nothing more than the thin, sketchy outline of the few things that you noticed, and of those only what you thought worth remembering But suppose you could answer, It would take me forever to tell you, and I am much too interested in whats happening now. ”One generation seems to be eager to expand our horizons. But I agree with Alan Watts. There is a lot of opportunity for horizon-expansion wherever we happen to be. I think Ill wake up tomorrow, walk down the street, and put on my adventurers cap.28. According to the text, the author quit his job mainly because _.A. he didnt want to stay inside all day long B. it didnt pay very well C. he wanted to spend some time traveling D. Dusty advised him to do so29. Whats the second paragraph mainly about?A. What is most important when traveling. B. What makes traveling so attractive. C. How to find a new version of ourselves. D.
