Here are some women in the sciences including medicine and mathematics. You may recognize some of these famous women scientists; others may be new to you and worth further exploring. Theyre listed alphabetically over several pages, though I put Maria Curie at the top. Thats the one woman scientist most people know. Click through to the rest of the pages so you dont miss the others.Marie CurieDates: November 7, 1867 Jul 4, 1934Known for: Marie Curie was the first well-known woman scientist in the modern world and was called “Mother of Modern Physics” pioneer in research into radioactivity; she was the discoverer of and first to isolate(隔离) polonium and radium; she established the nature of radiation and beta rays; she was also the first woman to be awarded a Nobel Prize, first person to win Nobel Prizes in two different scientific disciplines: Physics (1903) and Chemistry (1911)Maria AgnesiDates: May 16, 1718 January 9, 1799Known for: Maria Agnesi wrote the first mathematics book by a woman that still survives. A science report.C. The Internet.D. A book review BDo You Really Know Your Cat?For those whove long wondered if their cats regard them merely as food providers, a report in the journal Behavioural Processes should clear up your doubts. In a study that exposed adult cats to four kinds of stimuli (刺激) food, toy, scent, and human social interaction, the majority of cats preferred human interaction over all other options, even food. This type of research “was done on dogs in the 90s” but not on cats until now, says Oregon State Universitys Kristyn Vitale Shreve, a co-author of the study. “Were trying to catch up.” Cats are generally considered in the U.S. as untrainable and unsocial, she says, but they can be taught using the same general principles as dogs so long as the incentives (诱因) are right. Vitales next study will research how to use cats preferences to train them. What else dont we know about cats? For instance, can you distinguish cats emotions according to their behavior? Cat emotions are infamously hard to figure out: A new study in Italy by scientists found that most owners dont recognize the range of signals cats use to show stress. “Dog owners know more about dog behavior,” says author Chiara Mariti. In contrast, cat owners often interpret their pets behavior as normal to the species, rather than a signal about how theyre doing. Scientists are working hard to solve such mysteries. Last year a Swedish university launched a five-year study into human-cat munication. The goal: to see if cats react to different ways humans speak to them, and to translate meows into emotions and desires.25. What do Kristyn Vitale Shreves words “Were trying to catch up” mean? A. We will try to catch more cats for further research. B. We are trying to do more research on cats.C. We are running after the cats to test their reaction to stimuli.D. We have much difficulty doing research.26. What do Americans generally think of cats? A. Theyre just like dogs.B. They like to interact with people.C. Their emotions change quickly.D. Theyre hard to train.27. It can be inferred from the passage that .A. the Swedish university will study how to interpret cat voice.B. food stimulus is more preferred by cats, pared with human interaction.C. Cats can be trained in exactly the same way we train dogsD. We can see the oute of the human-cat munication study as early as five years laterCI love the Olympics because there are always so many amazing stories of dedication, perseverance and sportsmanship. The last Olympics in Rio de Janeiro were no exception. But one of the best life lessons I learned was not an example of any of the noble qualities listed above. This life lesson es from the tragic tale of Chad Ie Clos from South Africa.Chad le Clos is a famous freestyle and butterfly swimmer, having won a world champion and an Olympic champion. In the xx Olympics he even beat Micheal Phelps in the 200-meter butterfly, Phelpss favorite race. When Phelps announced he would participate in xx Olympic Games, an instant rivalry (竞争) match was created. When they climbed onto the blocks before the end of the race, le Clos stared over at Phelps. However, Phelps never seemed to notice. Towards the end of the race, Phelps had a small lead ing towards the wall and in the lane next to him, le Clos was swimming with his head turned towards Phelps. Instead of focusing on his own stroke(划水), he was still watching Phelps. In the end, Phelps won the gold medal and le Clos got the 4th place! The world champion didnt even get a medal and I believe that it was because of how much he focused on everything but himself. In fact, in our life, we tend to spend our time looking at, and paring ourselves to, the lives of others. The danger is that when we are focusing on others, we dont have time to focus on making ourselves better. We dont improve our life by focusing on others. We improve when we focus on where we are at and what we can do better. The truth is that those in the habit of paring themselves to others will never get to a point where they are content. Even if they look around and see that they have more money, a better job, or a bigger house, there will always be somebody who has more. The constant parison and fighting to be “the top” only leads to a lifetime of disappointment and bitterness.28. Whats the function of the first paragraph in the passage?A. Introduction.B. ment.C. Background.D. Explanation.29. What is the authors attitude towards Chad le Clos?A. Concerned.B. Suspicious.C. Regretful.D. Indifferent.30. What do you learn about Chad le Clos?A. He won an Olympic gold medal. B. He won a medal in the xx Olympics.C. He is the best friend of Michael Phelps. D. He beat Phelps in the 200-meter freestyle.31. Which of the following is true according to the passage?A. Care and perseverance bring good luck. B. Concentration on yourself matters.C. parison leads to success. D. Happy are those who are content.DNew evidence suggests that the earliest traces of a language can stay with us into adulthood, even if we no longer speak or understand the language itself. And early exposure also seems to speed the process of relearning it later in life.In the new study, recently published in Royal Society Open Science, Dutch adults were trained to listen for sound contrasts in Korean. Some participants reported no previous exposure to the language; others were born in Korea and adopted by Dutch families before the age of six. All participants said they could not speak Korean, but the adoptees from Korea were better at distinguishing between the contrasts and more accurate in pronouncing Korean sounds.“Language learning can be kept subconsciously, even if conscious(有意识的) memories of the language do not exist,” says Jiyoun Choi, post-doctoral fellow at Hanyang University in Seoul and lead author of the study. And it appears that just a brief period of early exposure benefits learning efforts later; when Choi and her collaborators pared the results of people adopted before they were six months old with results of others adopted after 17 months, there were no differences in their hearing or speaking abilities.“Its exciting that these effects are seen even among adults who were exposed to Korean only up to six months of age an age before babbling begins,” says Janet Werker, a professor of psychology at the University of British Columbia, who was not involved with the research. Remarkably, what we learn before we can even speak stays with us for decades.32. Which of the following is TRUE about the participants in the study?A. They were divided into two groups according to their Korean language abilities.B. The adoptees from Korea lied that they couldnt speak Korean.C. There were no differences in their hearing or speaking abilities.D. None of them could speak Korean.33. What can we infer from the passage?A. People forget the language they learned if they dont use it.B. Early exposure to a foreign language may help children learn it better later at school.C. The earlier one learns a language, the more progress they make.D. Its important to teach children to speak before 6 months old.34. What does the underlined word “babbling” mean in the last paragraph?A. Babies attempt to speak. B. Logical thinking. C. Parents care. D. pany of friends.35.
