Throughout history, advertising has been an effective way to promote (促进) the trading and selling of goods. In the Middle Ages, merchants employed town criers to the public messages aloud to promote their goods. When printing was invented in the fifteenth century, pages of advertisements (ads) could be printed easily and were either hung in public places or put in books.By the end of the seventeenth century, when newspapers were beginning to be read by more people, printed materials became an important way to promote products and services. The London Gazette was the first newspaper to set aside a place just for advertising. This was so successful that by the end of the century several panies started businesses for the purpose of making newspaper ads for merchants.Advertising spread quickly throughout the eighteenth century. Ad writers were starting to pay more attention to the design of the ad text. Everything, from clothes to drinks, was promoted with clever methods such as reception of the firms name or product words organized in eye-catching patterns, the use of pretty pictures and expressions easy to remember.Near the end of the nineteenth century, panies that were devoted to the production of ads came to be known as “advertising agencies (广告商).” The agencies developed new ways to get people to think of themselves as members of a group. Throughout the twentieth century, advertising agencies promoted consumerism (消费主义) as a way of life. Spreading the belief that people could be happy only if they bought the “right” products. 61. It was successful in promoting products and services D. It was the most popular newspaper in London CThanks largely to the Kepler space telescope, astronomers have discovered more than 2,000 planets in the universe. Keplers final goal is to find worlds similar to Earth-places where theres a chance that alien life might exist. But the search for life will still not be easy. It will be important to choose the best possible targets. Thats the reasoning behind two new rating systems (评估体系)proposed by Washington State University environmental scientist Dirk Schulze-Makuch, along with nine other colleagues. The first rating system is called the Earth Similarity Index, or ESI. Thats just what it sounds like: its a measure of how closely an alien world matches Earth in terms of size and temperature. The temperature is important because liquid water is an important part for life. The size of the planet seems important too. If a planet is too small, like Mars, it might not have enough gravity (引力) to hold on to its atmosphere. If the planet is too big, gravity might have pulled in too much atmosphere, which would create too much pressure at the surface. A world four or five times as large as Earth might be able to support life. But anything bigger than that could cause problems. This second system is called the Planetary Habitability Index, or PHI. It includes planets that have a solid surface of some kind, protected by an atmosphere of some kind. Other things necessary under the PHI system are some sort of energy source (sunlight); some sort of chemical environment that allows the formation of plex molecules (分子); and the presence of liquid-but not necessarily water. The search will get easier as technology improves. Still, these new ways of looking for alien life give us our best chance of learning if somewhere out we have galactic (银河的)relatives. 66. Kepler is . A. a scientist B. an organization C. a system D. a telescope 67. According to the 5th paragraph, to support life, the following are necessary EXCEPT . A. a solid surface B. water C. a protective atmosphere D. an energy source 68. Why is there no life in Mars? A. Because the Mars is too hot to keep the water. B. Because the sun is far away from the Mars. C. Because the Mars cant keep the atmosphere. D. Because there is not any other energy in Mars. 69. We can infer that the text is . A. a description of natural resources B. a research report C. a book review D. an introduction to space science 70. What does the text mainly talk about? A. New ways to look for alien life. B. Goals to find worlds similar to Earth. C.Systems to search for more planets. D.Reports made by Dirk Schulze-Makuch. D Teenagers are damaging their health by not getting enough sleep because they are distracted (分散) by electronic products in their bedrooms, according to a survey. UK advice body The Sleep Council said “junk sleep” could rival (比得上)the consumption of unhealthy junk food as a major lifestyle issue for parents of teenage children. It brings no less harm than junk food to ones health. Its survey of 1,000 teenagers aged 12 to 16 found that 30 percent managed just 4 to 7 hours sleep as opposed to (形成对照)the remended 8 or 9 hours by the experts. Almost a quarter said they fell asleep more than once a week while watching TV, listening to music or using other electronic products. “This is an extremely worrying situation”, said Dr. Chris Idzikowski of the Edinburgh Sleep Centre. “What we are seeing is the appearance of Junk Sleep-that is sleep which is of neither the length nor quality that it should be in order to feed the brain with the rest it needs to perform properly at school. ”Nearly all the teenagers had a phone, music system or TV in their bedroom, with around two-thirds possessing all three. Almost one in five of the teenage boys said the quality of their sleep had been impacted by leaving their TV or puter on. The survey also found that 40 percent of teenagers felt tired each day, with girls aged 15 to 16 doing the worst. However just 11 percent said they were bothered by the lack or quality of sleep. “Im surprised that so few teenagers make the link between getting enough good quality sleep and how they feel during the day,” Idzikowski said. “Teenagers need to wake up to the fact to feel well, perform well and look well; they need to do something abo
