Unit 1 A land of diversity. There is a large percentage of Asian people in the US. Theyre hard working, respectful but strange sometimes. If you dont understand the culture, you will get some problems with them. Asian people are different from any other cultures. If you think you know them, you might want to think again. How are they different? When it comes to most Asian culture, respect is everything. You can do anything you want but dont disrespect an Asian man. You will get some real consequences afterward and especially if he is your boss. Its something called “face_saving” in the Asian culture. Its ridiculous sometimes but its their culture. Sometimes their culture can come in between their relationship at work. Asian people might expect a lot of respect from their coworkers when their coworkers just see them as an equal.Americans are very different from Asian people. If youre Asian, you might want to understand the American culture and even adapt to their culture if you work with them. It will be easier for you since youre in their countries. Imagine an American working in China, expecting Chinese coworkers to get along with him when he criticizes them straight out on every single matter in front of everyone. I think they will take him outside and take care of him. It just doesnt work that way with Asian people. If youre an American boss giving your Asian employee a review, you will see that they will have a problem with your negative remarks. They will think that you dont like them, disrespectful, and want to get rid of them; when in fact, youre just doing your job. Of course, its not fair for you as an American boss but just expect that it can be something that is on your Asian employees mind. 1The Americans cant get along well with the Asians probably because _.Atheir cultures are differentBthey dont like each otherCboth of them are too proudDthey have different political views答案:A细节理解题。根据第一段第三句“If you dont understand the culture, you will get some problems with them.” A。2The underlined phrase “face saving” in Paragraph 2 probably means _.Asaving some money for later useBmaking faces to please your bossCshowing some respect to somebodyDhelping somebody out of trouble答案:C词义猜测题。 C。3From the third paragraph we can know that it is difficult_.Afor the Asians to accept the culture in AmericaBfor the Americans to adapt to the culture in ChinaCfor people to learn the culture in a foreign countryDfor people to follow the culture in their own country答案:B推理判断题。 B。4The negative remarks an American boss gives on your work probably mean he/she _.Adoesnt like you any longerBthinks you are not worth respectingCoffers you some better adviceDwants you to improve your work答案:D推理判断题。 Teenagers that are getting into different kinds of addiction have become one of the biggest problems faced all over the world and especially in America.
