A. the young peoples B. the researchers C. the runners D. the tests B People living in different countries made different kinds of words. Today there are about fifteen hundred languages in the world. Each contains (包括) many thousands of words. But we do not need all these. To read short stories, you need to know only about two thousand words. Before you leave school, you will learn only one thousand more. The words you know are called your vocabulary (词汇). You should try to make your vocabulary bigger. Read as many books as you can. There are plenty of books written in easy English for you to read. You will enjoy then. When you meet a new word, find it in your dictionary. Your dictionary is your most useful book. 60. Before you leave your school, youll learn _. A. only about two thousand words B. five hundred thousand words C. three or four thousand words D. only one thousand more 61. To make your vocabulary bigger, you must _. A. read as many books as possible B. get as many dictionaries as you can C. buy plenty of books D. have a very large English dictionary 62. You will enjoy _. A. your vocabulary B. the books written in easy English C. your dictionary D. finding new words in a dictionary C Here are a few tips weve put together to help you learn English well. Speak, speak, speak! Practise speaking as often as you caneven speaking to yourself is good practice. Try recording yourself whenever you can. Compare your pronunciation with the master version, see how you can do better and have another try. If you do this several times, you will find that each version is better than the last. Why not learn with someone else? It helps if you can learn with someone else. If you can persuade a friend or family member to study with you, it will make you keep working. Agree times to meet and set goals for the week, and test each other regularly. Dont get stuck by a word you dont know Practise improvising (即兴的) ways of getting your meaning across while speaking spontaneously (本能), even if you dont know the exact words or phrases. Think of things you might want to say whenever you have spare time. A basic example is the use of tenses. If you dont know the past tense but want to talk about yesterday, use the verb in the present tense and use the word for “yesterday”. Use facial expressions, hand movements, anything to get your meaning across. Language learning is also about intuition (直觉直觉) Guesswork is important in learning a new language. When listening to recorded material, you arent expected to understand everything first time round. If you play the same piece several times, you will most probably understand something new each time. Learn to make maximum use of all the clues you can pick up. For example, what do the speakers sound like? Happy? Angry? Calm? Etc. Build up your vocabulary A wide vocabulary is the key to successful language learning but dont try to learn too much at once. Its best to study frequently, for short periods of time. Take a maximum of six or seven items of vocabulary and learn them. Put them into sentences to fix them in your mind, then come back to them later. Much of the vocabulary in the course is presented by topic. And above all, have fun! 63. Why should one have himself recorded when practicing speaking? A. To encourage others to start. B. To record his own progress. C. To improve his speaking. D. To compare himself with others. 64. Which of the following is the most important in learning English? A. Speaking. B. Pleasure. C. Which of the following seems NOT to be true in learning a language? A. Practice makes perfect. B. A good beginning is half done. C. Rome is not built in a day. D. Dont run before you can walk. D In my long years of teaching, I often ask my student to read the texts until they can recite them, and I tell them that recitation is an important part of their homework. However, some of my students are tired of doing so, thinking that it is both hard and useless. They argue that it takes a long time to recite a text from memory and text itself never appears in a test paper. In my opinion, it naturally takes time to recite a text, but it is worth doing so. When you are able to recite a text, you are sure to be familiar with the words and expressions. When you need them in reading or writing or doing exercises, they will come to your mind quickly, and so you will give quick response to all kinds of language situation. How can we say that it is useless? Besides, many students complain that they soon forget what they were once able to recite. This is true, but you dont need to worry. While you are reading and forgetting the texts, your language level is being raised. Sure you dont remember your Chinese texts that you once read in the primary school, but now you are able to read novels and newspaper. So, recitation of the texts will help you improve your language ability. 67. The writer often asks his students to recite the texts,_. A. But they dont like to do so. B. And they are eager to do so C. But they wrote a letter to the Department of Education reporting the thing. D. But they do more exercises instead of reciting the texts. 68. What do the students think about the teachers advice? A. The English teacher tries his best to help them with English. B. The English teacher is very kind to them. C. The English teacher asks them to do something useless. D. The English teacher should let them study on their own. 69. According to the text, which of the following is correct? A. The teacher thinks the students are too naughty to learn English well. B. The students think they spend a lot of time in reciting the texts and get nothing. C. The students say that they often forget the words. D. The students take no interest in English. 70. When the students are against his suggestion, the writer_. A. often criticizes them B. patiently explains to them why they should recite the texts C. wants to give up his idea D. is afraid that he is criticized by the headmaster. 71. Why does the writer suggest that the students recite the text? A. Reciting the texts can improve the ability of applying English. B. Reciting the texts is the best way of learning English. C. The students should remember all the texts that the teacher has taught them. D. Reciting the texts can greatly improve the classroom teaching. E Britain and other nations should be well on with the building of huge industrial complexes (工业园区)for the recycling of wastes within fifteen years. The word rubbish could lose its meaning because everything that goes into the dumps would be made into something useful. Even the most dangerous and unpleasant wastes would provide energy if nothing else. The latest project is to take a city of around half a million inhabitants (居民) and discover exactly what raw materials go into and what go out. The aim is to find out how much of these raw materials could be provided if a plant(工厂)for recycling waste was built just outside the city. This plant would recycle not only metal such as steel, lead (铅) and copper, but also paper and rubber as well. Another new project is being set up to discover the best way of sorting and separating the rubbish. When this project is completed, the rubbish will be processed (处理) like this: First, it will pass through sharp metal bars which will tear open the plastic bags in which rubbish is usually packed; then it will pass through a powerful fan ( n. 扇,风扇 ) to separate the lightest elements from the heavy solids; afte
