Family unity builds successCImagine, one day, getting out of bed in Beijing and being at your office in Shanghai in only a couple of hours, and then, after a full day of work, going back home to Beijing and having dinner there. Sounds unusual, doesnt it? But its not that unrealistic, with the development of Chinas high-speed railway system. And thats not all. China has an even greater high-speed railway plan to connect the country with Southeast Asia, and eventually Eastern Europe. China is negotiating to extend its own high-speed railway network to up to 17 countries in 10 to 15 years, eventually reaching London and Singapore.China has proposed three such projects. The first would possibly connect Kunming withSingapore via Vietnam and Malaysia. Another could start in Urumqi and go through Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, and possibly to Germany. The third would start in the northeast and go north through Russia and then into Western Europe. The new system would still follow Chinas high-speed railway standard. And the trains would be able to go 346 kilometers an hour, almost as fast as some airplanes. Of course, there are some technical challenges to overe. There are so many issues that need to be settled, such as safety, rail gauge(轨距), maintenance of railway tracks. But the key issue is really money. China is already spending hundreds of billions of yuan on domestic railway expansion.China prefers that the other countries pay in natural resources rather than with capitalinvestment. Resources from those countries could stream into China to sustain development. Itll be a win-win project. For other countries, the railway network will definitely create more opportunities for business, tourism and so on, not to mention the better munication among those countries. For China, such a project would not only connect it with the rest of Asia and bring some much-needed resources, but would also help develop Chinas far west. We foresee that in the ing decades, millions of people will migrate to the western regions, where the land is empty and resources unused. With high-speed trains, people will set up factories and business centers in the west once and for all. And theyll trade with Central Asian and Eastern European countries.8. According to the passage, the greatest challenge to the new high-speed railway plan is _.A. technical issuesB. safety of the systemC. financial problems D. maintenance of railway tracks9. Chinas new high-speed railway plan will be a win-win project because _ .A. China will get much-needed resources and develop its western regions.B. China and the countries involved will benefit from the project in various ways.C. China will develop its railway system and munication with other countries.D. The foreign countries involved will develop their railway transportation, business and tourism.10. Which of the following words best describes the authors attitude towards Chinas high-speedrailway plan? A. Critical.B. Reserved.C. DoubtfulD. Positive.11. Which of the following might be the best title for the passage?A. New Railway Standards B. Big Railway DreamsC. High-speed Bullet Trains D. International Railway NetworkDA popular saying goes, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” However, thats not really true. Words have the power to build us up or tear us down. It doesnt matter if the words e from someone else or ourselves the positive and negative effects are just as lasting. We all talk to ourselves sometimes. Were usually too ashamed to admit it, though. In fact, we really shouldnt be because more and more experts believe talking to ourselves loud is a healthy habit. This “self-talk” helps us encourage ourselves, remember things, solve problems, and calm ourselves down. Be aware, though, that as much as 77% of self-talk tends to be negative. So in order to stay positive, we should only speak words of encouragement to ourselves. We should also be quick to give ourselves a pat on the back. The next time you finish a project, do well in a test, or finally clean your room, join me in saying “Good job!”Often, words e out of our mouths without us thinking about the effect they will have. But we should be aware that our words cause certain responses in others. For example, when returning an item to a store, we might use warm, friendly language during the exchange. And the clerk will probably answer in a similar manner. Harsh (刻薄的) and critical language will most likely cause the clerk to be defensive.Words have power because of their lasting effects. Many of us regret something we once said. And we remember unkind words said to us! Before speaking, we should always ask ourselves: Is it true? Is it loving? Is it needed? If what we want to say doesnt pass this test, then its better left unsaid.Words have power: both positive and negative. Those around us receive encouragement when we speak positively. We can offer hope, build self-esteem (自尊) and motivate others to do their best. Negative words destroy all those things. Will we use our words to hurt or to heal? The choice is ours12. There is no need for us to feel ashamed when we talk to ourselves because _A. almost everybody has the habit of talking to themselvesB. talking to ourselves always gives us courageC. we can benefit from talking to ourselvesD. it does no harm to have “self-talk” when we are alone13. The underlined part in the third paragraph means that we should also timely _A. remind ourselves B. praise ourselves C. make ourselves relaxed D. give ourselves amusement14. The author would probably hold the view that _A. encouraging words are sure to lead to kind offersB. negative words may motivate us to make more progressC. people tend to remember friendly wordsD. it is better to think twice before talking to others15.
