CLeonardo da Vinci, one of the greatest thinkers in the world, began his career as an artist. Very little is known about Leonardos early life. He was born in 1452 in the town of Vinci. As a boy, Leonardo showed a great interest in drawing, sculpting and nature. However, because Leonardo was born to parents who were not married to each other, he was barred from some studies and jobs. He trained as an artist after moving to Florence with his father in the 1460s. It was an exciting time to be in Florence, one of the cultural capitals of Europe. Leonardo trained with one of the citys very successful artists, Andrea del Verrocchio. He was a painter, sculptor and gold worker. Verrocchio told his students that they needed to understand the bodys bones and muscles(肌肉) when drawing people. Leonardo took the teachers advice very seriously. He spent several periods of his life studying the human body using dead bodies. While training as an artist, Leonardo also learned about and improved on quite new painting methods at the time. One was the use of perspective (透视) to show depth. A method called “sfumato” helped to create a cloudy effect to suggest distance. “Chiaroscuro” is a method using light and shade as a painting effect. Leonardos first known portrait(肖像)now hangs in the National Gallery in Washington, D.C. He made this painting of a young woman named Ginevra de Benci around 1474. The woman has a pale face with dark hair. In the distance, Leonardo painted the Italian countryside. He soon received attention for his artistic skills. Around 1475 he was asked to draw an angel in Verrocchios painting “Baptism of Christ.” One story says that when Verrocchio saw Leonardos addition to the painting, he was so amazed by his students skill that he said he would never paint again.38. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?A. Verrocchio thought Leonardos work was excellent.B. Leonardo thought his teacher s advice was wrong.C. “Sfumato” is a method to show depth by using light and shade.D. “Baptism of Christ” made Leonardo known across the world.39. Which of the following words can be used to describe Leonardo according to the third paragraph?A. Energetic. B. Creative. C. Confident. D. Organized.41. Which is the correct order of the things that happened to Leonardo?a. He finished the painting of Ginevra deBenci.b. He moved to Florence.c. He finished drawing an angel in his teachers painting.d. He began to study the dead body.A. b, c, e, d, a B. a, b, c, d, e C. b, d, e, a, c D. b, e, d, a, cDMark Hoffman and his wife, Guia, own a bed-and-breakfast guesthouse in Kempton, Illinois. They often serve their guests with fresh vegetables from the garden. The Hoffmans have been growing food and flowers for twenty-five years. Mr. Hoffman has been trying working with shade plantings. He says visitors to his website often ask how to plant in shade spaces. He said, “Its certain that most plants will produce more in full sun. But if you do not have full sun, there are other choices.” For example, he grows tomatoes near the trees. Trees can produce a lot of shade. But Mr. Hoffman says his tomato plants grow as long as they get five hours a day of direct sunshine, especially morning sun. This does not only go against the traditional advice that tomatoes need six, eight, even twelve hours a day of full sun, it also shows how plants and trees roots can share nutrients(营养) and water. Mr. Hoffman also planted asparagus(芦笋) around a tree. When it rains, all the rain from the leaves of the tree drops down right on the asparagus. Mr. Hoffman says plants with wider leaves seem to do better in shady environments. He also found that his potatoes did better in partial shade than in full sun. Moving them out of the sun helped control an insect problem with leaf hoppers. Mr. Hoffman does not use pesticides (农药). Instead, he planted the potatoes near the tree, especially on the east side of the tree. The potatoes get morning sun, but they are shaded during the hottest part of the day. Leaf hoppers dislike shade, and the hottest part of the day is when they do the worst of their damage. Time of day, brightness of the sun, shadows from trees, walls and buildings, these all influence how much sunshine falls or does not fall on plants. People who are interested in shade planting should also consider different conditions while planting vegetables in the shade.42. Whats the writers purpose of writing the passage?A. To introduce Mark Hoffman and his family.B. To recommend a method of managing a website.C. To show vegetables can be planted in the shade.D. To show vegetables must be planted in the shade.43. What can we infer from the second paragraph?A. Food and flowers produce more in the shade.B. Food and flower cant grow without full sun.C. Planting food in the shade is the best choice.D. Sun can affect the production of some plants.44. By using asparagus as an example, the writer wants to explain that _.A. how plants and trees share water B. vegetables grow better in the shadeC. how leaves get sunshine under the tree D. asparagus prefers to grow in the shade45. The underlined words “leaf hoppers” in Para.5 may be a kind of _.A. plants B. insects C. pesticides D. potatoes四、词汇运用(共l0小题;每小题l分,计l0分)根据句子意思,用括号中所给汉语提示或英语单词的适当形式填空。在答题卡标有题号的横线上,写出空缺处所填单词的正确形式。(每空一词)46. It is necessary for you to know how to enjoy life as a teenager. As a teenager, you cant finish your task at times. That is exactly why you have so many problems in your life; your parents wont let you have a night-out with friends because you dont clean your room or your teacher is going to take you to the head teacher because you havent finished your homework. So please remember: work must come first. When you go wrong, you go back to bed every night hating yourself for the mistakes you have made. If you dont make mistakes, you wont learn, but dont repeat them because there isnt plenty of time to go wrong. Learn from your mistakes and others, and it will help you to improve. Dont try so hard to be right all the time, or you will not be satisfied with yourself. Most of us want to be popular in school and you ask your parents to get you the best clothes, but they wont. To deal with that situation, Id say that if your parent is not willing to pay for all those expensive clothes for you, get yourself a part-time job or spend your money wisely. And, dont be influenced by others by having similar bad habits. Most teenagers often feel sad during the teenage years. All you need is someone to talk to you and listen. So, find a listener. Talking it through helps reduce the stress. Besides, you should develop your hobbies and interests! Because life is all about experiences and learning from them in your teenage years, enjoy every
