对弥尔顿自由主题的研究往往是基于其他主题而同步进行的，如神学、社会学、 政治学、历史学等。对弥尔顿自由的探讨多散布于汗牛充栋的研究成果中。这些成 果虽各具其研究重点但其中不乏有对弥尔顿的自由提出见解的研究，但同时也使得 对究竟什么是弥尔顿的自由的研究显得极为必要。弥尔顿首先是一位伟大的诗人， 其呕心而著的作品为分析、研究从而寻找答案提供了可靠的路径。弥尔顿也是位思 想家，他关心人的灵魂及其未来，他的自由更多是精神层面的自由。他把自由给予“明 理而德馨之人是因为他相信理性和美德之于秩序的作用。失乐园中合理的秩序 蕴含了上帝创世的意愿，而人的自由也基于此秩序。用理性看清秩序并用它和美德 守护这一和谐的秩序，弥尔顿清教式的自由永远处于得与失的交界，只有理性和美 德才能保证真正的自由常驻。这两大关键词彰显出了弥尔顿追求的真正自由的内涵：
