更不是艺术家抒发个人观点的工具。艺术展示出其自身的生命力和话语体系。从 小说内容来看，王尔德通过描写一幅画像的变化和主人公的遭遇，象征性地揭示 了生活与艺术之间的联系和矛盾。首先，道林的变化始于他内心渴望模仿艺术的 愿望，这象征性地解释了王尔德的“生活模仿艺术 这一论断。接下来，道林对 画像的影响、以及画家贝泽尔之死则暗示着庸俗的生活与高雅艺术之间的对抗。
