查尔斯狄更斯是十九世纪英国杰出的批判现实主义小说家，在三十四年的创作生 涯中写出了十四部长篇小说和许多中短篇小说，当时社会上的重大事件迅速地在他的作 品中得到展现。艰难时世是狄更斯小说创作上所谓“阴暗”时期的重要作品，这一 时期他的小说更多涉及严肃的社会问题，对英国资本主义社会的揭露批判加深了，结构 也更复杂严谨，直接正面地反映劳资矛盾和工人群众反抗资本家的剥削压迫。 国内外学者对艰难时世的研究往往重在再现作者的原意、世界观和写作时的文 化背景。然而，艰难时世不仅与作者的世界观和文化背景有关，还与小说叙述视角 有着密不可分的联系。因此，本文将依据新历史主义批评方法，从“文本的历史性”和 “历史的文本性 两个视点切入，把艰难时世放在一个更大的社会历史语境中进行 研究解读，指出作品反映的是1 8 世纪英国特定的历史背景，继而剖析1 8 5 4 年前后英国 的文化历史情况，揭示历史对文本的影响，并阐释艰难时世在英国社会发展中所起 的重大历史作用。 除导言和结论外，本文分五章从新历史主义视角对艰难时世进行解读。第一章 和第二章简述了狄更斯在文学领域所取得的巨大成就以及艰难时世在其作品中的重 要地位，综合性地介绍了国内外学者对艰难时世的相关研究、新历史主义的基本理 论及其在文学批评中的应用。第三章探讨了艰难时世中工业主义、教育制度和实用 主义不可避免地带着作者所处的历史时期社会文化状况的烙印。第四章通过对比分析狄 更斯时代的读者与现代读者对艰难时世的解读差异，解读工业时代背景下小人物的 边缘话语，以及总结狄更斯的创作策略，指出这些差异不仅源于并体现新历史主义在“历 史的文本性 观点上所强调的批评者无法摆脱的主观性，与狄更斯在文本构建中采取的 意象和舞台戏剧效果也有密切联系。第五章探讨了狄更斯在艰难时世中流露出与新 历史主义在文学对历史塑造作用有限性上的共识，主要表现为对社会规范徒然的挑战和 决定论意味极强的象征以及对英国历史积极的塑造作用。最后一章为总结。新历史主义 作为一种新的批评解读方式，为了给当代人的精神生活带来文化意义，在批评实践中采 取“文本的历史性和“历史的文本性 立场，这种立场有助于我们揭示狄更斯的艰 难时世深层的历史文化蕴含，以及对其中的权力因素即以葛擂硬和庞得贝为代表的功
