摘要 本文试分析特斯艾略特对传统的理解以及他的传统观在其所 著荒原一诗中的体现。艾略特将传统理解为：历史意识，文学传 统和非个性化因素。对传统的热爱使得艾略特作为一名诗人和批评家 在其文学创作和批评时重返过去，寻找旧的秩序。作为现代文学中最 重要的文学批评理论之一，非个性化理论以它独特的非个性化艺术区 别于其它的文学批评理论，它要求作者在创作的时候隐去自己的个人 情感，通过传统再现现实。它主张将传统与现实并置，或者说在传统 的基础上构建现实，通过传统与现实的比较，可以让读者体会到传统 与现实的反差，从而体会到传统的美好与现实的不足。传统服务与现 实，传统可以再现现实。非个性化理论主张作者能够以虬怀旧”的眼 光来看待现代社会，因为现代社会所缺失的信仰都存在于传统之中。 荒原一诗就是对现代社会尤其是战后和工业革命之后的现代 社会所作的一个批判性的考察。诗中主要有四组传统贯穿于全文，而 这四组传统都联系起来看又构成了一个整体，再现了现代社会的精神 枯竭。艾略特在诗歌中借用传统来提醒读者现代社会已经病入膏肓， 而现代人却毫不理会信仰的缺失。除此以外，在荒原中，通过传 统所体现的艺术手法有：“客观对应物 和并置。传统可视作“客观 对应物 ，对应现实世界。传统也与现实并置，进行比较。“客观对应 物 和并置都是依赖于传统的艺术表现手法。 本文通过四章论述特斯艾略特的传统观，以及他的传统观在 荒原一诗中的体现。 第一章探讨艾略特对传统的理解以及前人对他的影响。艾略特对 传统的理解可分为三个方面：历史意识，文学传统和非个性化的因素。 第二章分析荒原一诗中的传统，并以传统为主线分析荒原。 本文将荒原中的传统归纳为三个方面：神话的传统，宗教的传统 和传奇的传统。
