h i pa sa s t r a , e g yo f r e s i s t a n c e - - - o n n o r m a n m a i l e r s e a r l y w o r k s 摘要 诺曼梅勒在美国二战后的历史文化舞台上占据着极其重要的地位。大量 的作品、众多的荣誉和传奇的生平使他成为二战后美国文坛上一个无法回避的 名字。尽管他的写作题材和写作体裁繁杂多变，他的作品却始终没有离开对二 战后的美国社会文化生活的深切关注。在他创作生涯之初，梅勒就对二战后国 内上升的极权主义趋势十分关注，对极权主义的关注和批判最终孕育出了其嬉 皮士哲学思想。在此笔者试图通过对梅勒前期的多部作品，主要是通过对裸 者和死者( 1 9 4 8 ) 、鹿苑( 1 9 5 5 ) 、一场美国梦( 1 9 6 5 ) 以及收集在自我 广告( 1 9 5 9 ) 中的多篇文章如白色黑人( 1 9 5 7 ) 等的文本分析，较为细致 地探溯梅勒的嬉皮士哲学思想，从而揭示其嬉皮士哲学思想实质上是反抗极权 主义的一种策略。 论文共有五部分组成。序言简要介绍诺曼梅勒的生平、文学成就和文学地 位，简单回顾国内外对诺曼梅勒及其作品的研究现状，并且大体勾勒论文的框 架。论文的第一章“美国二战后的极权主义”通过分析梅勒的多部作品展现其对 极权主义多种表现形式的批判，从而探索嬉皮士主题出现的土壤。在裸者和死 者中，梅勒表现出了对以军队为代表的政治机构中的极权主义的关注和担忧； 随后梅勒批判了极权主义的另一种表现形式“麦卡锡主义”：在鹿苑中，“麦 卡锡主义”不仅仅通过政治机构的形式表现出来，其势力还延伸到好莱坞电影业 这种大众传媒中；在梅勒随后的多篇文章中，梅勒批判了以多种大众传媒为手段 的极权主义。梅勒在批判极权主义的同时也在寻求对抗极权主义的有效途径。论 文的第二章“嬉皮士：反抗极权主义的策略”追寻了梅勒对嬉皮士的选择历程， 通过对白色黑人的文本细读分析嬉皮士哲学的内涵，阐述其出现的社会背景、 文化来源、行为特征等，从而对嬉皮士哲学进行客观的评析。论文的第三章“嬉 皮士哲学的实践”通过对鹿苑和一场美国梦的文本研读，深入分析嬉皮 士如何和极权主义意识相对抗。如果说鹿苑中的主人公电影导演艾特尔最终 屈服了极权主义意识的统治，是个失败的嬉皮士，那么在小说的叙述者瑟吉厄斯 身上，读者可以看见一个未来的嬉皮士；而这个形象在一场美国梦中得到延 续和发展，主人公罗杰克对极权主义意识进行了成功的对抗，是个成功的嬉皮士。 h i pa sas t r a t e g yo f r e s i s t a n c e -
