摘要 威廉福克纳，1 9 4 9 年诺贝尔文学奖获得者，是美国2 0 世纪最 重要的作家之一。在他最为著名的约克纳帕塔法世系中，印第安人 与白人黑人一起构成了美国南方种族关系的完整画面，是福克纳作品 中重要而独特的一部分。然而学者通常将注意力放在了黑人与白人的 种族关系上，在很长一段时间里忽视了福克纳作品中美国南方印第安 人的存在。本论文以福克纳笔下所描述的印第安人为切入点，关注美 国南方印第安契卡索部落在殖民化及转型期美国南方的生存状态，剖 析了他们在历史文化冲突下走向毁灭的自身原因，同时也对福克纳所 提出的生存之路进行了深入探讨。 相当多的评论集中在白人统治者对印第安人的迫害，而忽视印第 安人对自己种族及文化衰亡所应负的责任。围绕这一问题，本文将首 先揭露印第安部落及其文化走向灭亡的自身原因。在“荒野”部分的 四个故事中，以伊凯摩塔勃为代表的印第安人在印第安文化和白人主 流文化的冲突中全盘接受了资本主义生活方式，使自己陷入了白人殖 民文化价值体系的困境中。他们不仅丧失了自己的传统，更重要的是 他们还丧失了人类最基本的同情心和人性，于是他们不可避免的走上 了毁灭之路。相反，在随后的历史转型期，下去，摩西中的乔贝 克和山姆法泽斯在多元文化的冲突中无法适应资本主义社会因而沉 迷于印第安文化不能自拔。山姆更是因为自己的三重身份饱受煎熬， 选择了生活在大森林中，以结束生命的方式来寻求自我。同时白人小 孩艾克麦卡斯林在山姆的引导下成为具有古老美德的白皮肤印第安 人，并被引入了一个理想化的过去时代。因而当艾克发现祖辈的罪恶 后，他选择了放弃遗产，躲进印第安的过去时代以寻求心灵上的安宁。 这种避世的做法也加速了麦克斯林家族的没落。 尽管福克纳在他的文学作品中更多的是暴露南方社会的黑暗，但
