黛熊 内容提要 女性主义批评是在女权运动推动下发展起来的。女性主义批评历来以抨 击经典和权威著称，诬方理论界对它颠覆父权文化、及传统的二元对立模式， 消除男性中心的文化主张已司空见惯。但近年来女性主义批评转向以女性经验 以及女性对生活的反映为基础，肯定女性自身价值和女性价值观念即肯定女人 的个人意识、女人的尊严以及女人对社会文化作出的贡献。通过对文学中的女 性人物进行重新阐释和解读，女性主义批评要求重新思考文学研究的概念领 域，即修正传统的、男性化的理论假设，从而建构自己的批评理论体系。然而， 由于女性主义文学批评没有理论之母，它借用了其他流派文学批评的理论，以 女性经验为基础，采取折中的批评方法，提倡在阅读中改变男权社会对女性的 贬抑和迫害的观念，恢复女性在社会中应有的地位。 本文借用女性主义文学批评的理论和方法以及女性主义批评所得出的某 些结论，对美国著名作家霍桑在他的长篇小说红字中所表现出的女性意识 进行探讨。由于受家庭背景、成长环境、女权运动、及超验主义哲学思潮的影 响，霍桑表现出对“女性”这一不同于男性的群体极大的关注。在红字中， 霍桑把自己的女性主义意识融入作品中，霍桑以女主人公海丝特为故事的中心 人物，以海丝特的通奸行为被发现、受惩处为线索，展开了对以海丝特为代表 的女性人物的内心世界及命运的探索，把自己的女性意识通过对女性人物的塑 造表达出来。首先，小说通过对故事中男性人物、清教男权社会对海丝特的伤 害、贬抑、排斥的描绘，揭示了女主人公处于“边缘”地位，表达了自己对女 性的同情揭露和批判了男权社会中普遍存在的厌女意识及女性被压抑的现 实。其次，霍桑用大部分章节来刻画海丝特这女性人物，从而奠定了海丝特 性的着力刻画再现了霍桑对海丝特自我意识、生存价值的肯定，并指出：正是 霍桑无法弃绝的女性意识使他能够塑造出一个具有叛逆精神的女性。 最后，通过解读霍桑对女性气质的理解和界定，探讨了霍桑的女性主义 意识的另一方面：对女性不同于男性的生活经验及生存价值的肯定。但是，由 于霍桑不是一个女权主义者，甚至他还带有某些反女权主义观念，因此，在红
