也标志着桑德堡诗歌风格的形成。而在整本诗集中，桑德堡的芝加哥城市情结贯穿 始终，处处可见他对这个城市既热爱又愤恨的矛盾感情，而“城市”在此诗集中也 可看作为一母题，承载着诗人对美国的城市和城市生活的双重情感。而本文就旨在 用文本细读结合文化阅读的方式探索“城市母题在芝加哥诗集中的重要影响。 对诗人来说，芝加哥这个城市给他的是变化、复杂、矛盾以及不知所措的各种选择。 而更重要的是城市带来的发展或者可以说是一种成长。 本文不单将诗人的城市情结与诗人的写作生涯联系起来，而且还会将这种情结 与美国文学传统以及当时历史语境下的文化思潮联系起来，这样看来，城市母题即 可看作是诗人诗学思想在诗集中的恰当反映也是解读诗人作品的开门钥匙。实际上， 正是从圣经中的城市原型与美国文学传统中的美国梦中得到灵感与启发，桑德堡在 芝加哥诗集中设置了一个既真实又有诗意的城市，将之作为母题生动反映出了 诗人对当时处于上升阶段的城市化进程的意识，进一步帮助诗人表达了他在当时历 史语境下对城市和对美国的矛盾感情堕落的当下、辉煌的未来。 本文开篇先简短介绍桑德堡的诗歌与其诗学艺术带给二十世纪诗坛独特而又深 远的影响。在第一章中将简略介绍芝加哥诗集的成书过程并对一些重要术语做 明细说明。 接着，第二章有选择性的分析芝加哥诗集中具有城市母题典型性的诗歌。 i i ； i v 西南大学硕士学位论文 桑德堡的城市母题诗歌大致可分为两类，一类将城市作为一个整体，如“芝加哥”、 “港口”、“迷失“摩天大楼 等；还有一类重点放到了城市中的人与生活上，这类 诗歌有“他们会说”、“幸福 、“罗马人的子孙 等。在本章中，笔者对这两类诗歌 进行文本分析，找出“城市在这些诗歌中的支撑作用，证明城市作为母题贯穿在 整部诗集中的普遍性和重要性。在这些诗歌中，桑德堡笔下的城市既是藏污纳垢的 罪恶之地又是充满活力、勃勃生机的发展之城。这从另一方面也体现了诗人对城市 的矛盾感情。 第三章在前一章文本分析的基础上，把重点放在文化阅读和阐释方面，研究诗 人城市母题的具体成因。诗人认为城市是罪恶之地，无疑是受到了圣经中城市原型 的影响。圣经中的人类之城以巴比伦为代表是一切罪恶集中地。而上帝之城又是一 副与此相反的美好景象，这一点美国文学传统中将美国的兴起比作是应许之地，是 将来的上帝之城。桑德堡也受到此美国梦传统的影响，认为罪恶是暂时的，而城市 的最终成长必然是按着美好的美国梦中所指引的那样，成为辉煌的上帝之城。除此 二传统的相互结合外，诗人所处的历史语境也有一定的影响作用。正是由于桑德堡 所处的那个新旧交替的时代的社会经济状况和文化运动，将诗人造就成为一位集自 然主义和社会主义于一身的理想主义者。而他的这些精神也完美体现了那个时代的 呼声。不可避免地，诗人将城市作为母题，用一种倾向于自然主义的手法，对城市 及城市生活进行了光荣与堕落的交织描述，将下层劳动人民的工作、生活及心理活 动直接生动地呈现到读者眼前，犹如具有影像的电影，既有动态美和真实感，又有 观后的回味和深思。 第四章是结论。交织着爱与恨的矛盾情感，桑德堡在芝加哥诗集中设置了 这样一个城市堕落与光荣共存、罪恶与朝气同体，用此城市作为母题，诗人在 诗歌中表达了他对现实中的芝加哥甚至是美国的矛盾感情：无法容忍却也无力解决 现实中的罪恶与不公，却也看到城市化的活力与生机，对未来怀抱美好愿望。这种 “痛并乐观着”的态度也一直激励着桑德堡继续在文艺和社会两方面对真理的不断 探索与追求。
