摘要 1 8 1 3 年，施莱尔马赫在一次题为翻译的不同方法的演讲中，提出了两种不同的 翻译方法，即“让作者向读者靠拢”与“让读者向作者靠拢”。韦努蒂把这两种方法分 别称为归化法和异化法，并从文化的角度对其进行了解释。从此，归化和异化成为西方 翻译界讨论的热门话题。国内对归化、异化的讨论更早，从已有资料可知，1 9 3 5 年， 鲁迅就已经使用过“归化”和“欧化”字眼。1 9 8 7 年，刘英凯发表了归化一翻译的 歧路一文，二十世纪九十年代，许钧组织了关于红与黑不同译本的讨论，之后， 归化和异化进一步引起了国内译界的关注。二十一世纪初，译界对归化和异化的讨论尤 为热烈，中国翻译在2 0 0 2 年第五期中，还特设了“归化异化谈”专栏。 从国内外关于这一对概念的讨论中，我们发现有两个问题人们意见不一致，一是归 化和异化的定义是什么? 二是人们该用归化策略，还是异化策略。在国内，对第一个问 题有两种不同观点，一种是，归化和异化是直译和意译的延伸；另一种是，归化和异化 还包括语言以外的其他层面，如文化层面，诗学层面。对于第二个问题也有两种不同的 观点，一种是，翻译应以归化为主；另一种是，翻译应以异化为主。对这两个问题的不 同回答，容易给人一种错觉，那就是归化、异化的定义比较模糊，翻译策略难以适从。 本文的写作目的便是弄清这两个问题。我们认为要弄清这两个问题，首先要弄清以下几 个问题，现代意义上的归化、异化的定义是什么? 它们与传统意义上的直译和意译以及 与二十世纪九十年代之前国内提出的归化、异化有什么区别? 影响归化、异化的因素又 有哪些? 本文尝试着对这些问题进行了探讨。 本文可分为两大部分，第一部分，通过对归化和异化的来源及韦努蒂的定义入手， 我们发现归化和异化至少应包括两个层面：语言层面和文化层面，并将归化和异化的表 现分为四个部分将行了探讨：1 、语言表达形式不同，所表达的文化概念不同；2 、语言 表达形式相同，所表达的文化概念不同；3 、语言表达形式不同，所表达的文化概念相 同；4 、语言表达形式相同，所表达的文化概念也相同。通过探讨，我们发现两个事实： 一是，从鲁迅关于归化和异化的谈论，以及刘英凯所罗列的归化的五个缺陷可以看出， 鲁迅和刘英凯的归化和异化实际上是直译和意译的代名词，与现代意义上的归化和异化 是不同的。二是，归化和异化在语言层面和文化层面上的表现是不同步的，在语言层面 上是归化的译文，在文化层面上可能是归化的译文，也可能是异化的译文。 第二部分，探讨了影响归化和异化的8 个主要因素，即文化心态，语言，翻译目的 文本类型，政治、社会背景，语言、文化交流史，读者，赞助人。通过对这些影响因素 分析，我们发现这些因素都曾对翻译策略产生过很大的影响，有的时候某些因素还会对 翻译策略具有决定的作用。我们认为，探讨影响翻译策略的因素应从共时和历时的角度 来进行。有些因素，在某一时期或某一国家或地区具有决定作用，在另一时期或另一国 家或地区不一定有重要作用。因此，谈论翻译策略应以归化为主，还是以异化为主，应 首先考虑归化，异化的两个层面，是语言上的归化、异化，还是文化上的归化、异化。 对这两个层面不加区分而孤立地谈论归化、异化是片面的。对翻译策略的讨论应考虑影 响归化、异化的各种因素，不分析这些因素丽孤立的讨论翻译应以归化为主还是以异化 为主也是片面的。 我们认为探讨归化和异化的表现层面及其影响因素具有重要意义，首先，通过探讨 归化、异化的不同表现层面的探讨，进一步弄清了直译、意译与归化、异化的不同，使
