I spent many days there _34_his hand and talking to him, helping with anything that needed to be done. He became a close friend of mine, even though he replied to me with only a very gentle moving of his fingers. Mr. Gillespie was still in a coma(昏迷) . I left for a week to vacation with my parents, and when I came back, Mr. Gillespie was _35 _I didnt have the courage to ask any of the nurses where he was, for fear they might tell me he had died. So with many questions unanswered, I continued to volunteer there through my eighth-grade year. Several years later, when I was a junior in high school, I was at the gas station when I noticed a _36_face. When I realized who it was, my eyes were filled with _37_He was alive! He began to tell me how, as he _40_there comatose, he could hear me talking to him and could feel me holding his hand the whole time. He thought it was an angle, not a person, who was there with him. Mr. Gillespie firmly believed that it was my voice and touch that had kept him _41_. Then he told me about his _42_and what happened to him to put him in the coma. We both cried for a while and exchanged a hug, said our good-byes and went our separate ways. Although I havent seen him since then, he _43_my heart with joy every day. Theyre quite small and have no opening to the outside world carrying sound through the body. For the past seven years, Simon Thorrold, a university professor, has been examining fish ears, small round ear bones called otoliths(耳石) . As fish grow, so do their otoliths. Each day, their otoliths get a ring of calcium carbonate (碳酸钙) . By looking through a microscope and counting these rings, Thorrold can tell the exact age of a young fish. As a fish gets older, its otoliths no longer get daily rings. Instead, they get yearly rings, which can also be counted, giving information about the fish s age, just like the growth rings of a tree. Ring counting is nothing new to fish scientists. But Thorrold has turned to a new field. Theyre examining the chemical elements(元素) of each otolith ring. The daily ring gives us the time, but chemistry tells us about the environment in which the fish swam on any given day. These elements tell us about the chemistry of the water that the fish was in. It also says something about water temperature, which decides how much of these elements will get together within each otolith ring. Thorrold can tell, for example, if a fish spent time in the open ocean before entering the less salty water of coastal areas. He can basically tell where fish are spending their time at any given stage of history. The Atlantic croaker is a popular saltwater food fish. Thorrold and his assistant have successfully followed the traveling of young fish from mid-ocean to the coast, a journey of many hundreds of miles. Of course, this is important to managers in the fish industry because they know nearly nothing about the whereabouts (行踪) of the young fish for most food fish in the ocean. Eager to learn about his technology, fish scientists are now lending Thorrold their ears. 49. Why does the writer compare the fish to trees? A. Trees get a growth ring each day. B. Trees also have otoliths. C. Their growth rings are very small. D. They both have growth rings. 50. Why is it important to study the chemistry elements of otolith rings? A. The elements of the otoliths can tell the history of the sea. B. Chemical elements of the otoliths can tell how fast fish can swim. C. We can know more about fish and their living environment. D. Scientists can know exactly how old a fish is. 51. How can you understand “fish scientists are now lending Thorrold their ears”? A. They want to know where they can find fish ears. B. They lend their fish to Thorrold for chemical studies. C. They are very interested in Thorrolds research findings. D. They wonder if Thorrold can find growth rings from their ears. ( C) LONDON A mornings train rides away, across the Channel, English kids talk about Liverpools soccer team in a Paris pub. Some Parisians have even started to go to work in London. In the 19th century, Charles Dickens compared the two great rival cities, London and Paris, in “A Tale of Two Cities(双城记) .” These days, it might be A Tale of One City. These days Parisians probably smile in sympathy at a visitor s broken French and reply in polite English. As it became harder to find jobs at home over recent years, perhaps 250,000 Frenchmen moved across the Channel. With an undersea tunnel, they could travel between cities in three hours. The European Union freed them from immigration and customs. Paris, rich in beauty, is more attractive. But London feels more full of life, and more fun until the pubs shut down. “For me, the difference is that London is real, alive,” said Trevor Wheeler, a banker. Chantal Jaouen, a professional designer, agrees. “I am French, but I11 stay in London.” she said. There is, of course, the other view. Julie Lenoux is a student who moved to London two years ago. “I think people laugh more in Paris.” she said. In fact, London and Paris, with their obvious new similarities, are beyond the old descriptions. As the European Union gave them more and more freedom, Londoners flocked into Paris to shop, eat and buy houses. “Both cities have changed beyond recognition.” said Larry Collins, a writer and sometimes a Londoner. Like most people who know both well, he finds the two now fit together comfortably. “I first fell in love with Paris in the 1950s, and it is still a wonderful place.” Collins said. “But if I had to choose, it would be London. Things are so much more ordered, and life is better.” But certainly not cheaper. In fancy ( high price) parts of London, the fee paid for an accommodation can be twice that on Avenue Foch in Paris. Deciding between London and Paris asks for a lifestyle choice. Like Daphne Benoit, a French journalism student with perfect English, many young people are happy to be close enough so they don t have to choose. “I love Paris, my little neighborhood, the way I can walk around a centre, but life is so structured.” she said. “In London, you can be who you want. No one cares.” 52. The underlined word “flocked” probably means A. flew a long way B. rushed hurriedly C. drove long distances D. came in large numbers 53. The best title for this passage is A. Londoners and Parisians B. A modern Tale of Two Cities C. The Similarity of Two Cities D. Fancy London and Fashionable Paris 54. We can infer(推断) from the text A. life in Paris is structured B. London feels more full of life C. Paris and London have become perfect partners D. Paris and London have become fierce competitors 55. From the passage we can know A. the two cities have developed very fast B. London is better than Paris now C. Paris is a favourite place for all journalism students D. people in both London and Paris now lead a regular life 第 II卷(非机读卷 共 50分) 一、听对话,按要求完成下面的听力任务。(共 8分,每小题 2分) 请根据所听到的对话内容和表格中的提示词语,将所缺的关键信息填写在下面的表格中。对话读三遍。 Information Sheet Name: David Johnson Age: 1. _ Favourite subject: 2. _ Favourite sport: Running Usual transport: Bicycle On Mondays: Go to the Young farmers Group to have fun and to learn things like 3. _. For years I wanted a flower garden. Id spend hours thinking of different things I could plant there. We had five children, Matthew, Marvin, Helen and the twins, Alisa and Alan. I was too busy raising them to grow a garden. We didnt have much money or time. Often when my children were little, one of them would want something that cost too much. Id have to say, “Do you see a money tree outside? Money doesnt grow on trees, you know.” Finally, all five children finished high school and college and were off on their own. I started thinking about having a garden again. I wasnt sure, though. I mean, gardens do cost money, and after all these years I was used to living with very little. Then, one morning in spring, on Mothers Day, I was working in my kitchen. Suddenly, I heard cars outside. I looked out of the window and saw a new tree planted right in my yard. I knew it was a weeping willow(垂柳) , because I saw things blowing around on all of its branches (树枝) . Then I put my glasses on and I couldnt believe what I saw. There was a money tree in my yard! I went outside to look. It was true! There were dollar bills, one hundred of them, taped(绑 )all over the tree. I could buy many flowers with one hundred dollars. There was also a note: “I still do something for you. Love, Marvin.” Marvin kept his words, too. He dug up a nice flower bed for me. My other children bought me tools, and other things to help me such as gardening books. That was three years ago. My garden is now very pretty. It is just the way I wanted it. When I go out to take care of my flowers, I dont seem to miss my children as much as I once did. It feels like they are right there with me. 17. Did the woman have five children? _ 18. One possible version: Our parents and teachers told us to be polite to others when we were very young. Now I am doing things as they tell me. For example, I always wait in line while doing shopping and give my seat to the old on the bus. I never forget to greet teachers when I meet them in or out of the school. And I also say the words “Thank you”, “Sorry” and “Youre welcome” to others whenever necessary. In my opinion, politeness is very important to us all because it can help us not only get on very well with each other, but also make the society better and warmer, especially in the year of 2008, when the 29th Olympic Games will be held in Beijing. So I strongly suggest that we all should be polite to each other. Conversation 1 M: Can you tell me how to get to the zoo, Daming?
