RESET FUNCTIONAt power on, SPLC780D starts the internal autoreset circuit and executes the initial instructions. The initial procedures areshown as follows:TC1602B0116WWW.TINSHARP.COMTC1602B0117WWW.TINSHARP.COM2.4. DISPLAY DATA RAM (DD RAM)The 80bit DD RAM is normally used for storing display data. Those DD RAM not used for display data can be used asgeneral data RAM. Its address is configured in theAddress Counter.Timing Generation CircuitThe timing generating circuit is able to generate timing signals to the internal circuits. In order to prevent the internal timinginterface, the MPU access timing and the RAM access timing are generated independently.LCD Driver CircuitTotal of 16 commons and 40 segments signal drivers are valid in the LCD driver circuit. When a program specifies thecharacter fonts and line numbers, the corresponding common signals output drivewaveforms and the others still outputunselected waveforms. The relationships between Display Data RAM Address and LCDs position are depicted as follows.Character Generator ROM (CG ROM)Using 8bit character code, the character generator ROM generates 5 x 8 dots or 5 x 10 dots characterpatterns. It also can generate 192s 5 x 8 dots character patterns and 64s 5 x 10 dots character patterns.Character Generator RAM (CG RAM)Users can easily change the character patterns in the character generator RAM through program. It can bewritten to 5 x 8 dots, 8character patterns or 5 x 10 dots for 4character patterns. The following diagram shows the SPLC780D character patterns:Correspondence between Character Codes and Character Patterns.TC1602B0118WWW.TINSHARP.COMThe relationships between Character Generator RAM Addresses, Character Generator RAM Data (character patterns), andCharacter Codes are depicted as follows:TC1602B0119WWW.TINSHARP.COM5 x 8 dot character patternsNote1:It means that the bit02 of the character code correspond to the bit35 of the CG RAM address.Note2:These areas are not used for display, but can be used for the general data RAM.Note3: When all of the bit47 of the character code are 0, CG RAM character patterns are selected.Note4: 1 : Selected, 0 : No selected , X : Do not care (0 or 1).Note5: For example (1), set character code (b2 = b1 = b0 = 0, b3 = 0 or 1, b7b4 = 0) to display “ T ”. That means charactercode (00) 16,and (08) 16 candisplay “ T ” character.Note6: The bits 02 of the character code RAM is the character pattern line position. The 8th line is the cursor position anddisplay is formed by logical ORwith the cursor.5 X 10 dot character patternsTC1602B0120WWW.TINSHARP.COMNote1:It means that the bit12 of the character code correspond to the bit45 of the CG RAM address.Note2:These areas are not used for display, but can be used for the general data RAM.Note3: When all of the bit47 of the character code are 0, CG RAM character patterns are selected.Note4: 1 “: Selected, 0 “: No selected, X “: Do not care (0 or 1).Note5: For example (1), set character code (b2 = b1 = 0, b3 = b0 = 0 or 1, b7b4 = 0) to display “ U ”. That means all of thecharacter codes (00) 16, (01) 16, (08) 16,and (09) 16 can display “ U ” character.Note6: The bits 03 of the character code RAM is the character pattern line position. The 11th line is the cursor position anddisplay is formed by logical OR with the cursor.Cursor/Blink Control CircuitThis circuit generates the cursor or blink in the cursor / blink control circuit. The cursor or the blink appears in the digit at theDisplay Data RAM Address defined in the Address Counter.TC1602B0121WWW.TINSHARP.COMInterfacing to MPUThere are two types of data operations: 4bit and 8bit operations. Using 4bit MPU, the interfacing 4bit data is transferred by4busline (DB4 to DB7). Thus, DB0 to DB3 bus lines are not used. Using 4bit MPU to interface 8bit data requires two timestransferring. First, the higher 4bit data is transferred by 4busline (for 8bit operation, DB7 to DB4). Secondly, the lower4bit data is transferred by 4busline (for 8bit operation, DB3 to DB0). For 8bit MPU, the 8bit data is transferred by 8buslines (DB0 to DB7). When the Address Counter is (07) 16, the cursor position is shown as below:REGISTER IR (Instruction Register) and DR(Data Register)SPLC780D contains two 8bit registers: Instruction Register (IR) and Data Register (DR). Using combinations of the RS pinand the R/W pin selects the IR and DR, see below:The IR can be written by MPU, but it cannot be read by MPU.Busy Flag (BF)When RS = 0 and R/W = 1, the busy flag is output to DB7. As the busy flag =1, SPLC780D is in busy state and does notaccept any instruction until the busy flag = 0.TC1602B0122WWW.TINSHARP.COMAddress Counter (AC)The Address Counter assigns addresses to Display Data RAM and Character Generator RAM. When an instruction for addressis written in IR, the address information is sent from IR to AC .After writing to/reading from Display Data RAM or CharacterGenerator RAM, AC is automatically incremented by one (or decremented by one). The contents of AC are output to DB0 DB6 when RS = 0 and R/W=1.I/O Port ConfigurationInput port: EInput port: R/W, RSOutput port: CL1, CL2, M, DTC1602B0123WWW.TINSHARP.COMInput / Output port: DB7 DB0MPU and Module Connect:TC1602B0124WWW.TINSHARP.COM3. PRECAUTION FOR USING LCM MODULE1. Liquid Crystal Display ModulesLCD is composed of glass and polarizer. Pay attention to the following items when handing.(1) Please keep the temperature within specified range for use and storage. Polarization degradation, bubblegeneration or Polarizer peeloff may occur with high humidity.(2) Do not touch, push or rub the exposed polarizer with anything harder than an HB Pencil lead (Glass, tweezers,etc.).(3) Nhexane is recommended for cleaning the adhesives used to attach front/rear polarizers and reflectors made oforganic, substances which will be damaged by chemicals such as acetone, toluene, ethanol and isopropyl alcohol.(4) When the display surface becomes dusty, wipe gently with absorbent cotton or other soft material like chamoissoaked in petroleum Do not scrub hard to avoid damaging the display surface.(5) Wipe off saliva or water drops immediately, contact with water over a long period of time may cause deformationor color fading.(6) Avoid contacting oil and fats.(7) Condensation on the surface and contact with terminals due to cold will damage, stain or dirty the polarizers. After products are tested at low temperature the must be warmed up in a container before coming is contactingtemperature air.No.ItemCriterion15Bubbles in polarizerSize : d mmAcceptable Qty in active aread0.30.3d1.01.0d1.51.5dDisregard31016Allowable densityAbove defects should be seated more than 30mm each other17ColorationNot to be noticeable coloration in the viewing area of the LCD panels.Backlit type should be judged with backlit on state only.18ContaminationNot to be noticeable.TC1602B0132WWW.TINSHARP.COM(8) Do not put or attach anything on the display area to avoid leaving marks on.(9) Do not touch the display with bare hands. This will stain the display and degrade insulation between terminals(some cosmetics are determinated to the polarizers).(10)As glass is fragile. It tends to become or chipped during handling especially on the edges. Please avoid droppingor jarring.3.7. INSTALLING LCM MODULEThe hole in the printed circuit board is used to if LCM as shown in the picture below.Attend to the following items wheninstalling the LCM(1) Cover the surface with a transparent protective plate to protect the polarizer and LC cell.Fitting PlatePratective plateLCM(2) When assembling the LCM into other equipment, the spacer to the bit between the LCM and the fitting plate shouldhave enough height to avoid causing stress to the module surface, refer to the individual specifications for measurements. The measurement tolerance should be 0.1mm3.8.PRECAUTION FOR HANDING LCM MODULESince LCM has been assembled and adjusted with a high degree of precision, avoid applying excessive shocks to themodule or making any alterations or modifications to it.(1) Do not alter, modify or change shape of the tab on the metal frame(2) Do not make extra holes on the printed circuit board, modify its shape or change the positions of components to beattached.(3) Do not damage or modify the pattern writing on the printed circuit board.(4) Absolutely do not modify the zebra rubber strip (conductive rubber) or heat seal connector.(5) Except for soldering the interface, do not make any alterations or modifications with a soldering iron.(6) Do not drop, bend or twist LCMTC1602B0133WWW.TINSHARP.COM3.9. ElectroStatic DISCHARGE CONTROLSince this module uses a CMOS LSI, the same attention should be paid to electrostatic discharge as for an ordinaryCMOS IC.(1) Make certain that you are grounded when handing LCM.(2) Before remove LCM from its packing case or incorporating it into a set, be sure the module and your body have thesame electric potential.(3) When soldering the terminal of LCM, make certain theAC power source for the soldering iron does not leak.(4) When using an electric screwdriver to attach LCM, the screwdriver should be of ground potentiality to minimize asmuch as possible any transmission of electromagnetic waves produced sparks coming from the commutator of themotor.(5) As far as possible make the electric potential of your work clothes and that of the workbench the ground potential.(6) To reduce the generation of static electricity be careful that the air in the work is not too dried.Arelative humidity of50%60% is recommended.3.10. PRECAUTION FOR SOLDERING TO THE LCM(1) Observe the following when soldering lead wire , connector cable and etc. to the LCMSoldering iron temperature: 28010Soldering time: 34 secondsSolder: eutectic solder. If soldering flux is used, be sure to remove any remaining flux after finishing to soldering operation.(This does not applyin the case of nonhalogen type of flux.) It is recommended that you protect the LCD surface with a cover duringsoldering to prevent any damage due to flux spatters.(2) When soldering the electroluminescent panel and PC board, the panel and board should not be detached more thanthree times, This maximum number is determined by the temperature and time conditions mentioned above, thoughthere may be some variance depending on the temperature of the soldering iron.(3) When remove the electroluminescent panel from the PC board, be sure the solder has completely melted, thesoldered pad on the PX board could be damaged.3.11. PRECAUTIONS FOR OPERATION(1) Viewing angle varies with the change of liquid crystal driving voltage (V0).Adjust Vo to show the best contrast.(2) Driving the LCD in the voltage above the limit shortens its life.(3) Response time is greatly delayed at temperature below the operating temperature range. However, this does not meanthe LCD cell be out of the order. It will recover when it returns to the specified temperature range.(4) If the display area is pushed hard during operation, the display will become abnormal, however, it will return tonormal. If it is turned off and then back on. Used under the relative condition of 40, 50%RH.(5) When turning the power on input each signal after the positive/negative voltage becomes stable.TC1602B0134WWW.TINSHARP.COM0 Min. 50n
