Amanda says, “At first we only knew that we wanted together.” They settled down in Birmingham, England, eager to start a family. On July 3, 2006, the black and white couple got their “one in a million” miracle: Amanda gave birth to fraternal twin (异卵双胞胎) girls with completely different skin colors, and the greatly amazed parents gave their daughters intertwined names: one would be Millie Marcia Madge Biggs, the other Marcia Millie Madge Biggs. From a young age the girls had similar features but very different color schemes. Marcia had light brown hair and fair skin like her English-born white mother, while Millie had black hair and brown skin like her black father, who is of Jamaican descent. “We never worried about it; we just accepted it,” Michael says.“When they were first born,” Amanda recalls, “people would look at my one daughter and then look at my other daughter. Then Id get asked the question: “Are they twins?”“Yes.”“But ones white and ones black.”According to Amanda, people who commented on the girls werent openly discriminatory (歧视的) or judgmentaljust very curious, and then as time went on, people just saw the beauty in them. The twins know what racism is. “Racism is where somebody judges you by your color and not by your true self,” Millie says. Michael, the father, says hes faced inequality at times throughout his life because of the color of his skin. “But its a different time now,” he says. Neither he nor Amanda has ever witnessed racist behavior toward their twin girls.“When people see us, they think that were just best friends,” Marcia says. “When they learn that were twins, theyre kind of shocked because ones black and ones white.” But when the twins are asked about their differences, they mention something else entirely. “Millie likes things that are girlie. She likes pink and all of that,” Marcia says. “I dont like the color pink; Im a tomboy. People should know about us by our true selves, not by our colors. After all, people are made how they are.”4What can we learn from the first paragraph?A. Amanda and Michael are of the same race.B. Amanda and Michael were not happy about the birth of their twins.C. A team of researchers carried out an experiment. The researchers used an Internet-based system to test the typing speed of over 37,000 volunteers on their smart phones. The volunteers spent about six hours a day using their phones. Most of them used two thumbs to type. Both Android and iPhone users were tested. They were given 15 English sentences to type out on their phones as quickly and accurately as possible. The research team found that people wrote about 36 words per minute. It is slower than the average rate for people using a computer keyboard. In a 2018 University of Cambridge study, the average speed for computer typists was 52 words per minute. Noting the narrowing of speed rates between smart phones and computers, the team said we have become slower at typing on keyboards over the years. 75 percent of those taking part in the study had typing speeds below 44 words per minute. But the fastest phone typists reached speeds of 80 words per minute. People using two thumbs typed 38 words per minute. Those using only one finger 29 words per minute.According to the findings, Anna Feit, a researcher at ETH Zurich, said it makes sense that younger people have higher typing speeds because they spend a lot more time on their devices. It was found that a phones automatic correct tool can be helpful. Users were able to type faster with it. “The given understanding is that techniques like word completion help people. Feit said. “But we found the time spent thinking about the word suggestions often outweighs the time spent typing the letters, making you slower. The difference between typing on a smart phone and a keyboard is called “the typing gap. They say this gap will further narrow in future as people get less skilled with keyboards and as smart methods for typing on devices continue to improve.8What is the purpose of the experiment?A. To prove typing on keyboards is the fastest way.B. To track over 37,000 volunteers typing habits.C. To promote peoples typing speed on smart phones.D. To find out how faster people type on their phones.9Which of the following groups type the fastest according to the passage?A. People using two thumbs in the research.B. Those using only one finger in the research.C. 75 percent of the volunteers in the study.D. Computer typists in the 2018 Cambridge study.10. What can we know according to Anna Feit?A. A drivers license always struck her as a symbol that she was growing up. “I want to have independence and be an adult. But I didnt want to leave my childhood behind. ” she says. Contrary to the popular belief in the 1980s that a drivers license was a marker of independence, Zhangs viewpoint is increasingly common. When it comes to becoming an adult, more American adolescents now say “Dont rush me.Many educators and parents view this slowdown with concern. They see a generation of young people growing up ill-prepared for life. Teachers say more students seem unable to function without their parents. And parents realize their 20-year-old hardly know how to do the laundry, and seems uninterested in driving anywhere. But other researchers argue that the change in youth behavior reflects a reasonable adaptation to a culture and society changed from former generations. Instead of simply growing up more slowly, they are redefining what it means to transform into an adult. It is natural that people would start to grow up “slower”.Some researchers have noticed something more fundamentala change in the definition of adulthood itself. For many young people today, becoming an adult has less to do with external markersthe house, the marriage, the jobthan with how they feel internally(内在地). Its the acceptance of oneself, making independent decisions, and financial independence. Kelly Williams says in her best-selling book, “These individual actions add up to a generation that is different.”Members of this age group today tend to make decisions about work, education, parenthood with care, and when they are ready. They are more politically active; engage in more volunteer work and more connected globally than former generations. Indeed, many of the decisions young people make today are less about adulthood than about the world they are inheriting.12What can be concluded from Amy Zhangs case?A.More American adolescents lack a broader vision.B.American adolescents seem in no hurry to be an adult.C.More young people dont accept American car culture.D.American parents are too strict with their children.13What challenge are the young Americans facing according to Para 2?AFailing to express their concerns timely.BLosing curiosity about the world.CLacking essential daily skills.DBeing tired of traditional education.14Whats the new marker of adulthood in some researchers view?AHow a person feels inside.BA happy marriage.CA successful and highly-paid job.DHow much property they own.15Whats the best title for the passage?AWhere the new generation is to go? BHow Americans interpret adulthood?CWhat helps youth be independent? DWhy adolescents say “Dont rush me?第二节(共5小题;每小题2分, 满分10分)根据短文内容, 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。“Whats the meaning of life?” People always ask themselves. Actually, many modern people have the problem that they dont know who they are and what their purpose is. 16 . Once high school seniors graduate, they seem to lose their identity. They once studied hard. But after they stop working, they begin to lose their way.In the theory of the Hierarchy of Needs (需求理论), Abraham Maslo, put forward a similar situation, which consists of the five levels of a persons need. The fifth and final level is self-realization, which is where our final achievement lies. 17 .I think self-realization has three major aspects. The first stage is acceptance, the second stage is discovery and the last stage is perseverance.Acceptance is the first stage. We should be reminded that we are all born unique, so we all have our own strengths and weaknesses. Only when we understand these, can we pursue them or change them. 18 .Once weve accepted ourselves, we can discover what we are interested in and what we want to be. 19 , but indeed we should live for ourselves. So before we start working towards a purpose, we should ask ourselves “Is this what we truly desire?” and “Is this going to change the situation were in?”The last stage is perseverance. 20 . Those who can self-realize are people who focus on the things they want to change for a long period of life.Through the three stages, we could gain recognition of ourselves. And by this point, whatever our lives were like, we would be able to stand tall, confident of ourselves.A. Its nothing to a man of perseveranceB. Being tolerant is the key to acceptance C. Only by acceptance of the past can we change itD. This is especially common among college studentsE. Many people tend to go along with social expectationsF. First, increasingly more people 42 (give)up reading over the past ten years. Second, quite a high percentage of people 43 continue reading have changed from reading paper books to e-books. Third, of the 44 (limit) number of those who continue reading paper books, a high percentage buy them online instead of from physical bookstores.Bookstores are providing leisure activities and coffeehouses inside. However, as 45 recent survey shows, these measures seem to be of little help. It would be a shame if physical bookstores were to disappear 46 (complete). Bookstores are more than “places selling books, they are cultural palaces. A city without bookstores is not culturally rich. However, bookstores cannot survive the fierce market 47 (compete) and they are failing.
