What does that mean?W: That means theyre not working.(Text 3)W: Can you catch the ladys meaning?M: No, I cant. She is speaking so fast that I cant follow her.(Text 4)M: Are there any differences between British English and American English?W: Certainly. For example, the British say “I have to go back now”, while Americans say “Ive got to go back now”M: Are there any differences in spelling?W: Yeah. For example, “color” is often spelt colour in British English.(Text 5)W: Hi, Lin Feng. Long time no see. How are you getting along with your English recently?M: Hi, Linda. Ive been learning English with an American teachers help. He told me to listen to the VOA every day, and Ive made great progress.W: Congratulations.(Text 6)M: I give up! I simply cant learn English. I try and try but dont make any progress.W: I know its hard, but maybe itll help if we spend more time practising together.M: Thats a good idea. But what kind of practice can we try?W: Well, why dont we practise these dialogues together?M: Thats a good idea. It might improve our spoken English.W: Sure.(Text 7)W: Excuse me, Mr. Benson. Can I talk to you for a minute?M: Sure, Mary. What can I help you with?W: Im really having problems in English. I do all my work and come to class, but Im not making much progress. What do you think I ought to do?M: Maybe its a little hard for you to learn English, but you are improving. Do you spend much time with Americans?W: No, not really.M: Why dont you try and make an effort? Maybe you could join a club at school. Another thing Id suggest is not waiting for Americans to invite you somewhere. Theres nothing wrong with calling up someone youve met and asking them to go somewhere.W: Those are good ideas. Thank you very much.(Text 8)M: Excuse me, Miss. Id like to get some information about the summer course at the English Training Center.W: Sure. What can I tell you?M: Can you tell me the starting and finishing times of the course, please?W: Yes. The course begins on July 15 and runs until August 20.M: Right, and what courses can we study?W: Well, you have a variety of courses. You have listening and speaking courses, reading and writing. What seems to be the problem?W: Ive got to write a long composition for my English class, and I just cant come up with any ideas, and it is due tomorrow.M: That shouldnt be too difficult. Remember those pictures you were showing me last week? The ones from your voyage last year.W: Sure, Ive got them here somewhere.M: Why dont you write about your impressions of the pyramids in Egypt and the camel ride you took?W: That sounds like a good idea. I can also talk about our visit to the North Africa, the Holy Land, and all of the historical places we visited.M: Well, now that youre feeling better, I think Ill be on my way. Ive got to finish my composition too.W: Thanks for your help. Im much more relaxed now and once I get organized, it wont be so difficult.(Text 10)W: Well, I suppose the schooling system in America and England is not quite the same way I would imagine. For example, John, what age do you start school?M: In America, most people start school at age five. They go to kindergarten. Its a voluntary thing.W: At five, yes.M: I actually went to a state primary school and I started just after my fifth birthday, um. you know most people start at five and then they can leave when theyre sixteen, I actually stayed on until I was eighteen.W: So, basically its more or less the same starting age. But, er. when do you finish in the States?M: Well, we finish, er. you can go to school, most people finish high school. But you can actually leave school legally at the end of the tenth grade which is about sixteen. when youre sixteen.W: So, more or less actually the same thing. And, er. as far as examinations are concerned, I mean, is it, um. I think its very different, isnt it?M: Well, exams are not quite the same. We dont have as many exams in America as they do in Britain. A Stayathome kids are named “generation nini” in Spain. They are those adults who still live at home and are neither working nor studying. But the problem is by no means limited to Spain. It is a worldwide problem. In Italy, they are known as “bamboccioni” or big babies. There nearly 60 percent of 1834yearold adults still live in their parents home, up from almost 50 percent since 1983. Once kept there by the love for their mamas homecooked food, the economic crisis has seen a rise in adults left unable to hold down a steady job or afford a home of their own. Last year, an Italian government minister admitted that his mother washed his clothes and made the bed for him until he was 30. He demanded a law forcing young Italians to leave their parents home at 18 to stop them becoming hopelessly dependent on their parents. In the UK, the government has made the term NEETS not in employment, education or training for these children. In England alone the percent of NEETS aged 1924 surged to 18.8 percent of the age groupin the last quarter of 2010, up 1.4 percent on the same period a year before. The number of British men in their 20s living with their parents has risen from 59 percent to 80 percent in the past 15 years, while the number of women has risen from 41 percent to 50 percent. The average age of the firsttime house buyers is now 38. In the US, the problem is known as the “full nest syndrome (综合征)”. Adults there are left struggling to support adult children who have stayed at home with student debts and facing few job opportunities in a weak economy. A recent study showed almost a third of American adults aged 34 and under are living with their parents.【语篇解读】越来越多的成年孩子住在父母家里,这种现象在全世界都很普遍。21“Big babies” mentioned in Paragraph 2 refer to those adults who _.Aare poorly educatedBare not as smart as othersClose their job in the bad economyDrely on their parents for a living答案与解析:D推理判断题。根据第一段的“They are those adults who still live at home and are neither working nor studying.”可知这些成年孩子是无收入来源、依靠父母生存的人。22The Italian government minister thinks that _.Aparents should make their children feel hopelessByoung people should live on their own after 18Cparents should never make the bed for their childrenDit is OK for adult children to live with their parents答案与解析:B细节理解题。根据第二段的“He demanded a law forcing young Italians to leave their parents home at 18 to stop them becoming hopelessly dependent on their parents.”可知应选B。23The underlined word “surged” in Paragraph 3 can be replaced by “_”Ajumped BreducedCrecovered Dmoved答案与解析:A词义猜测题。根据后面的“up 1.4 percent on the same period a year before”可知这里是指激增到了18.8%。24What does the last paragraph tell us?ASome American adult children are a burden to their parents.BAmerican parents are happy to live with their children.CAmerica has the most adult children compared with other countries.DIt is a tradition for adult children to live with their parents in America.答案与解析:A推理判断题。根据末段的“Adults there are left struggling to support adult children”可知这些无收入来源的成年孩子成了父母的负担。B Think for a moment about the last music CD you bought. Most likely, you can remember the names of the singers who sang the songs that made you want to buy the CD. You may even know the names of some of the performers who played the musical instruments. Those performers, however, are only some of the people who made the music. Most people in the music industry work “behind the scenes”, and the roles they play in the music process (过程) are very important.Songwriters Before a song comes out, a songwriter must imagine it. Some songwriters work alone, but many songwriting teams combine the talents of songwriters and composers. Pop music legend Elton Johns bestknown songs, including Tiny Dancer and Your Song, were written to go with the lyrics written by Bernie Taupin, whose name you may not know.Arrangers After a song has been written, music arrangers make it more attractive by deciding which instruments will be used, what speed the song will have, and whether the song should have a low or high pitch (音调) Recording engineers Recording engineers also play a major role in creating the final sound that you hear. First, they set up the recording studio and the room where the performers play. Next, they use recorders to record the music. Finally, long after the musicians have gone home, recording engineers use a mixing board to balance the sound of each musician. Many people make a living by making music. You may not know all of their names, but all of them work together to create the songs you love.【语篇解读】当你听到一首歌时,第一个想到的一般会是演唱者,或许你还知道一些乐器演奏家的名字。但是你知道吗?一首歌的诞生包含着许多幕后工作者的辛劳。25Why does the author mention Elton John and Bernie Taupin?ATo compare their functions in creating a song.BTo give an example of a songwriting team.CTo explain how a songwriting team works.DTo show the advantage of teamwork.答案与解析:B细节理解题。根据文中Songwriters这一部分的内容可知,作者提到Elton John和Bernie Taupin是举一个写歌团队的例子。26Music arrangers decide all of the following EXCEPT _.Athe instruments Bthe songs speedCthe songs pitch Dthe songs name答案与解析:D细节理解题。根据文章第三段的内容可知,编曲的工作包括决定歌曲所使用的乐器、歌曲速度以及歌曲的音调。D项所讲的不是编曲的工作。27What is the last step of a music process?ABalancing the sound of each musician.BRecording the music with recorders.CSetting up the recording studio.DMaking music CDs.答案与解析:A细节理解题。根据文章倒数第二段最后一句“Finally. to balance the sound of each musician.”可知,制作音乐的最后一步是平衡声音。C Ice cream businessman Mikey Coles treats are cooler than cool. He bought an ice cream maker and began experimenting with her recipe. “It took me away from everything,” he says. Six experiments later, Cole perfected his chocolate treat, Ice Ice Baby, and began selling ice cream out of his apartment. In 2014, Cole opened his own shop not far from where he grew up. Called “Spring into STEAM,” the program will offer workshops in March, April and May. It begins on March 2. “We know that science education is so important now, and technology is changing so fast,” said Misty Jones, library director. “We see this as a way to bring kids new ideas and help them know more about the world around them.” STEAM stands for science, technology, engineering, art and math, and there will be workshops in each area. This years theme (主题) is “Bug Out!” so the science workshop will invite insect (昆虫) experts to explain the survival skills of insects. The engineering workshop will watch bees as builders. For math, the kids will learn spatial geometry (空间几何学) by making 3D paper insects. Kids in other workshops will learn computer coding, create a light using a glass bottle, or build insects using pipe cleaners and LED lights. Jones said shes also excited about the chance for children to take part in the International Barcode of Life Project, which is trying to create a digital catalog (电子目录) of different kinds of insects on Earth. Kids in San Diego can ask for free insect collection tools at their local libraries beginning on March 2. Insects they collect can then be sent in for DNA identification (鉴定) Jones said it is unusual for every library to start the same program at the same time
