My Favorite SubjectThe first time I took English as a subject I was a pupil of grade four at a primary school. Spring FestivalThe Spring Festival, or Chinese New Year, is the most essential festival for the Chinese in one year. Days before the Lunar New Year, most families busy themselves in shopping and cleaning their houses for the observance of the day.On the eve of the Spring Festival, the whole family will sit together talking, eating and watching special TV programs from CCTV and local TV stations. The next day after they get up, they usually put on new clothes and new shoes. Young people go and greet their elders, wishing them good luck and good health and children usually receive “red packets” stuffed with money. When people meet their relatives or friends, they greet one another with “Happy New Year!” or “Happy Spring Festival!”In recent years, the traditional celebration has been changing with economic development in China. For example, many families spend the Spring Festival on a tour, or have a family feast in a good restaurant.Test Experience Tests are important activities in school. Since the very first day I went to school, I have had to deal with them almost every month and I have gone through all kinds of exams; entrance exam, quizzes, final tests, and tests for various certificates. I have tasted the flavor of happiness and laughter, but mostly sadness and sorrows. I always suffer for quite some time before each test. I feel biter and gloomy and my books are disgusting. During the examinations, my stomach often aches; my hands shake and my heart beats fast. I try desperately to squeeze out every piece of information to answer questions but still cant come up with much and often feel at a loss. After the exam, the world seems to be bright only for a short period. Another test is round the corner. There are endless ones in front of me. The only way for me to get rid of the nuisance is to adapt myself to them and face them courageously.DictionariesThe dictionary is a patient and qualified teacher. Whenever you come across a new word, just look it up and you will get at least one definition or explanation. Every student, whether attending school or self-taught, must always have a dictionary at hand. As a study aid, it is cheap, and convenient.Language skills will develop with your wise use of various dictionaries. The more you use them, the more familiar you will become with them. Sooner of later, you will be good at finding the page, scanning the entries and locating the exact meaning of the new words.But there is one thing you should keep in mind. As a language student, you must never fall back on your dictionary to excess; basic language skills come from your practice, but not from your use of dictionaries. The only way to the mastery of a language is to expose yourself to the language by listening, speaking, reading and writing more.See the WorldIt is quite vital for university students to see the society. Having stayed in the ivory tower for over ten years to learn a lot of theoretical knowledge from textbooks, the students still feel bewildered as soon as they step out of the campus.It is time they got to know the world outside the campus right now. fortunately, the society has offered them various opportunities to practice what they have learned in school. They can learn to cooperate with others and to contribute their knowledge to the society. One of my friends once managed to find a part-time job of tutoring a girl of 8.Through this experience, he has learned how to deal with people and how to dedicate his love to people who are in need of it. Consequently, he can always be ready when confronted with a chance to know the world for he has really benefited a lot from it.ExaminationMany arguments exist about the advantages and disadvantages of an exam. Some students complain that their teachers have given them too many exams and they have little spare time whereas teachers hold it true that some of their students do not work hard only because they do not have frequent examinations.The examinations can show what and how much a student has mastered. It is fairly evident that a teacher prefers to give his students a test after he has finished teaching a unit. On the part of a teacher, he can find how well his students have grasped in the unit learning. On the part of the students, they can learn what aspects they fail to master and should pay more attention to later.Therefore, examinations, if given at reasonable intervals, can benefit both the teachers and the students. From examinations, teachers can figure out what points they have missed in teaching and must work hard to improve and the students can also focus their concentration on their weakness.Childrens BooksDifferent books are designed for different people. Picture books are usually for babies and children. Love stories and novels are written mainly for young people. Books with such purposes as health and medical care are welcome to old people.Children are not supposed to read all kind of books. Owing to a rather limited experience of the world, they are not old enough to tell good from bad or right from wrong. It is not easy for children to resist the temptation to commit a sex crime if they are exposed too often to the books with much description of sex and violence.Proper guidance is helpful to young people, especially to teenagers. Children who receive proper instructions from parents and teachers about their spare time reading will be most likely to live in harmony with neighbors and social values. Those who are not properly guided may possibly be puzzled and grow up to be troublemakers.Who Should Have the Say?It is quite common for the parents to make all the decisions for their child in China. They choose schools for their child. They decide on the childs clothing, timetable and even company. After their childs graduation, the parents tend to pick up a job, perhaps a spouse, to some extreme, for their child.Having no say at home hinders a child from making way in the world. The parents cannot stay with their child and make decisions on everything fro him all the time. The parents having all say for their child will make him develop a passive and dependent habit, which will do him more harm than good in their future career.To learn to be independent is essential for every child. After graduation, a child has to be faced with all the problems he may encounter, such as job-hunting. He will build up a family of his own and has a baby. Therefore, giving advice to rather than making decisions for the child is more realistic. The Advantages and the Disadvantages of TravelingPeople have good reasons to enjoy traveling. They claim that traveling broadens their horizons, especially I geographical and historical learning. They go on to argue that traveling helps people understand each other better and makes their life more colorful. It offers them more chances to taste different foods and try on different clothes. Without traveling people will possibly fail to interpret other cultures.Those who hold opposite idea have their reason, too. They emphasize that traveling means a considerable amount of money and energy. While traveling, tourists are often ripped off or even cheated in an unfamiliar or strange place and dont know where to make a complaint. As a result, they will be fatigued after all these walking, shopping, quarrelling, and trafficking or even feel getting hurt.In reality, I think traveling can benefit us a lot. If we do some traveling from time to time, we will make many new friends all over the world, and come up with new ideas frequently. We can get familiar with new places that are better than our hometowns, which we always think to be the best in the world.DiscoveryDiscovery is not a mysterious word for explorers and scientists to enjoy only. In fact, all people make new discoveries as they grow up. For instance, a baby will eventually find out he can float on water if he is given enough time to play in a bathtub.Sometimes a discovery brings you a great joy. When you find what you have been looking for, you will feel very happy. When you one day realize that you have learned and mastered a skill or a method, you will certainly be delighted.A discovery is likely to mean regret or even pain to you. If you find that the person you love cheats you occasionally, you will feel greatly betrayed. If you realize that you failed the exam you care so much, you will surely be discouraged. Whether you like it or not, discovery is a part of your life.Video GamesNowadays, video games can be seen in many recreational centers and they have also found their way into families. Both adults and children find video games a convenient and cheap entertainment and even believe it can help them to become quick in response.However, some people argue against video games. They exclaim that many video enthusiasts play the games for nothing but to kill time. They stare at the TV screen for many hours each day. As a matter of fact, video games are occupying too much of a game-players life and making him lazy, not to mention its harmful effect on his eyes and his physical and mental health.Different people see the same thing in different lights. I think that video games, like anything else in the world, have both advantages and disadvantage. Their value depends on how you take advantage of them. But when you find yourself hopelessly addicted to them, your only way out is to throw them away.High Rise FlatsBlocks of “high-rise” flats have been erected in large numbers in many cities. They are the inevitable product of the rapid growth of cities. Since a lot of people have immigrated from rural areas to urban ones, the population of cities is growing larger and larger.To relieve this pressure, architects have been designing plenty of high-rise flats. They say that high-rise flats are the ideal solution to the dual problem of acute housing shortage and lack of space in urban areas. Therefore, people sometimes wonder whether the motorcar is a boon or a menace.YouthYouth is a precious gift and golden time in your life. Youth is also the time when your memory is the best. You are more capable of learning when you are young that when you are old. The knowledge you have acquired during this time will certainly be helpful and useful in your later career.Young people are the least conservative and always ready to take in the new. When you are young, you are energetic and vigorous, strong and healthy. Therefore, they young should make full use of time to learn a skill of profession in their youth, setting high goals for themselves and having the courage to overcome any obstacle in their way.Youth comes only once in a lifetime. It is important that you should not idle away your youth. If you realize how precious youth is, you will certainly take advantage of it. The truth should always be remembered: never dream away your time when you are young.The Elderly and the YoungThe elderly are respectable as a whole. To begin with, the elderly have made great contributions to our society. Secondly, the elderly are rich in experience and can offer some guidance to the young. In addition, everyone will grow old inevitably.The young should also be taken good care of. The young are the future of our society. They are less conservative, which is indispensable to the development of our society. Since they are poor in social experience and liable to make mistakes, the elderly should provide the young with some good advice and help them do their best to build our society.It is essential to respect the elderly and take good care of the young. The construction of our society need joint efforts of the elderly and the young, which, in turn, is good to the stability and development of our society.Is English Easy to Learn?Some advertisement says, “Learn English well in three months, or get your money back.” Actually, it never happens quite like that. If it were true, the institutes of foreign languages would all be shut down. No language is easy to learn, including ones mother tongue.The language of English has its own difficult points. There are so many collocations, set phrases and idioms in English. Another example is the spelling. English learners have to spend quite much time learning English words by heart. So they are required to speak and read English more. English learning becomes easier only when the learners have had enough practice.Some people say it is easier to learn English in the English speaking countries. That can be true. But the opportunity cost may outweigh its return. Modern science and technology provides good means for language learning. Tape recorders, radios and television sets are all helpful. Learners have a lot of ways to learn English well.TourismMany countries in the world are going out to develop tourism, which has become a kind of industry. Tourism attracts foreigners consumption. Many countries, such as China, Singapore etc, are doing their best to develop tourism for it can earn foreign exchange for their countries.There are many advantages of tourism. First, it helps a nations commerce and contribute to the nations economy. Second, it provides jobs for the layoffs and relieves unemployment. Third, it can increase understanding between peoples so that they learn about different cultures of the world.However, tourism has also brought about some problems. It creates pollution and destroys beautiful scenic spots. It makes some parts of the world too crowded to live in. It goes without saying that thes
