friends treated me like everybody else. that was just about the best thing they could have done. it helped me believe in myself, so when troubles came along, i could deal with them. like most albinos, i had terrible eyesight, but the fact that i could hardly see didnt trouble me that much. kids would make fun of me, calling me “whitey”. people stared at me when i held reading material right at the tip of my nose so that i could see it well enough. even when i was eight, movie-theatre clerks started asking me to pay full price because i “looked older”. the worst part for me was that because my eyesight was so bad, i couldnt play sports very well. i didnt give up trying, though. i shot hoops (投篮) every day. and i studied harder. eventually, i got better at school and loved it. by the time i got to college, i was double majoring, going to summer school and busying myself with every activity i could find. i had learned to be proud of being an albino. i did my best to make “albino” a positive word. and i decided to make my living with my eyes and in sports. i couldnt see very well to play sports, but with a solid education and a drive to do it, i could make a living involved in the area i loved. ive done it now for over thirty years in print and in video, and now in cyberspace (网络空间). people make jokes about how im the only “blind editor” they know, but the jokes are affectionate, some of them signs of respect. i was just a proud albino kid from the coal country of pennsylvania. i now realize that being born an albino helped me to overcome difficulties, gain confidence and be proud of my personal achievement.21. according to the author, _ helped him a lot in dealing with troubles.a. the special care from his family and friendsb. the care and love from the interested in adventurous trip in the wild. no one intends to get lost in the wild, but circumstances such as weather conditions or medical emergencies may need the use of wilderness survival. with key survival tips, a person can survive in the wild until help arrives. here are some of the tips:1. remain dry to keep body warm. do not intentionally get wet. avoid frostbite by staying out of the wind. uncovered skin can become frostbitten in a matter of seconds under the right conditions. wind is the biggest factor. stay out of direct sunlight and find shade where possible. 2. look for a cave or other natural weather shelter. check for other wildlife like bears, snakes before entering the shelter. build a shelter with branches and with rope. use as many branches as possible for added stability and protection against the wind and weather. if you are in a desert environment, try to build an underground shade shelter to avoid prolonged sun exposure so you can travel more comfortably in cooler temperatures.3. light a fire using one of several methods: matches or lighters if they can be got ; striking a flint (燧石) or a sharp edged rock with steel from a knife blade ; focusing the sun through an eyeglass on cotton or dry grass or other excellent fire starting materials ; using dry wood and sticks to start your fire : you can take two pieces of dry wood, sharpen one of them and use it to drill into the other piece, with anything easy to catch fire next to the drill bit. the moment the tiny wood pieces catch a spark, put them onto a nest of leaves or twigs or dry bark.4. humans can live without food longer than they do without water. dig a hole with hands or a stick several feet from a river or lake. let the hole fill in by itself and use that water to drink. collect the dew, which is water. drink sap (汁液) from birch trees or maple trees by cutting a branch with a knife or breaking it off. the sap is mostly water and slightly sweet. follow dry river beds to the water source. check a dry river bed at night and it may contain water not found during the day. conserve water by traveling at night and resting in the shade during the day. boil water for 15 minutes. use iodine tablets if available. 5. eat only known plant specimens like berries, nuts and fruit. this is not the time to test your wild mushroom knowledge. watch for signs of wildlife. if the animals eat it, it is probably safe for humans too. dig up the roots of plants like wild onions and carrots to eat raw or boiled in water. gather worms for protein. maintain protein levels by capturing and eating available meat sources. dig trap holes to catch rabbits or small mammals. fish and snakes are also available sources of protein that require little hunting skill.6. a quick way to get rescued is to create a smoke signal. creating a visible sos sign has the same effect. 7. remember to take things you may need: survival kit, rope and tape, whistle, matches and tinder, pencil and very small notebook, brightly colored cloth, knife, water, tents, traps for hunting, a compass, a gun if possible.24. you can find drinking water under the guidance of _. a. tip 1b. tip 2c. tip 4d. tip 725. how many ways are mentioned on starting a fire without matches or lighters? a. three.b. four.c. five.d. six.26. the best title for this passage is _. a. adventurous trips in the wild b. survival things needed in the wild c. tips on being saved quickly d. tips on wilderness survival cif youve ever had a dog, you know just how deep a connection you can develop with “mans best friend”. but a dog has a much shorter life span than humans about 12 to 15 years long , which means every dog owner has to go through the heartbreaking moment when their loving pet passes away. why not make a clone(克隆)of that dog then? this is the solution offered by a south korean company, sooam biotech research foundation. the company has successfully cloned at least 400 dogs, mostly for us customers, ever since it pioneered the technique in 2005. now, sooam biotech is planning to introduce their business to uk dog owners, offering them dogs that look just like their lost ones. meanwhile, another dog is selected to supply an egg(卵子). researchers then replace the dna in the egg with that from the skin cell and put the egg into the womb (子宫) of a female dog. the egg grows into a young dog over the following two months. to clone a dog, researchers first need to take a skin cell from a living dog or one that has just died. it takes less than a day to do it , but it comes at a shockingly high price around 63,000 . but if you cant afford it now, you can also save the cells in a laboratory and use them at a later date. just like identical twins of humans, they share the exact same dna but there will still be small differences between them. “the spots on a dalmatian clone will be different, for example,” insung hwang, head of sooam biotech, told the guardian. however, as magical as cloning might sound, there is no guarantee that the cloned dog will be a perfect copy of the original one. dog owners will also have to accept the fact that personality is not “clone-able”. apart from genes, personality is also determined by upbringing and environment, which cloning technologies simply cannot overcome”, professor tom kirkwood at newcastle university, uk, told the telegraph. perhaps bringing our dogs back with cloning is not the best way to remember them after all. kirkwood, a dog owner himself, pointed out: “an important aspect of our relationship with them is accept the pain of letting go.”27. according to the article, sooam biotech research foundation is _. a. working on plans to help dog owners enjoy their pets longer b. offering a way to help dogs give birth to more young
