wind came. he heard some music. he listened carefully and found it was his f sonata. he followed the music and came to a small house. there through the window, he saw a girl playing a very old piano and a young man was making shoes beside her, he pushed the door open and went in. the host received him very warmly and told him that the girl was his sister, who was blind but very fond of music. they couldnt afford to send her to a master. so she was only trying to play some music she heard the neighbors play. she knew it was the work of a great composer. beethoven was very much moved. suddenly the candle was blown out. moonlight struck on the girls slender figure. then beethoven played music for them. he played so wonderful that the brother and sister were amazed. that was his famous clair de lune.21beethoven heard the music because _.a. it was played loudly b. there was a slight windc. the piano was old d. he stopped walking22the young man and the girl were _.a. brother and sister b. husband and wifec. lovers d. good friends23the girl couldnt go to the teacher most probably because_.a. she was blindb. her brother didnt want her to goc. they were too poord. good friends24beethoven played some music_.a. before he was movedb. as soon as he came inc. when he saw the pianod. after he heard the moving storybdo womens minds work the same as mens? absolutely not. at least, that is what most men are convinced of. psychologists view the subject either as a matter or frustration or a joke. now the biologists have moved into this minefield, and some of them have found that there are real differences between the brains of men and women. but being different, they point out hurriedly, is not the same as being better or worse.there is, however, a definite structural variation between the male and female brain. the difference is in a part of the brain that is used in the most complex intellectual processes-the link between the two halves of the brain.the two halves are linked by a trunkline of between 200 and 300 million nerves, the corpus callosum. scientists have found quite recently that the corpus callosum in women is always larger and probably richer in nerve fibres than it is in men. this is the first time that a structural difference has been found between the brains of women and men and it must have some significance. the question is what?, and, if this difference exists, are there others? research shows that present-day women think differently and behave differently from men. are some of these differences biological and inborn, a result of evolution? we tend to think that is the influence of society that produces these differences. but could we be wrong?research showed that these two halves of the brain had different functions, and that the corpus callosum enabled them to work together. for most people, the left half is used for word handing, analytical and logical activities; the right half works on pictures, patterns and forms. we need both halves working together. and the better the connections, the more harmoniously the two halves work. and, according to research findings, women have the better connections.but it isnt all that easy to explain the actual differences between skills of men and women on this basis. in schools throughout the world girls tend to be better than boys at language subjects and boys better at maths and physics. if these differences correspond with the differences in the hemispheric trunkline, here is an unalterable distinction between the sexes.we shant know for a while, partly because we dont know of any precise relationship between abilities in school subject and the functioning of the two halves of the brain, and we cannot understand how the two halves interact via the corpus callosum. but this striking difference must have some effect and, because the difference is in the parts of the brain involved in intellect, we should be looking for differences in intellectual processing.25which of the following statements is correct?a. results of scientific research fail to support popular belief.b. brain differences point to superiority of one sex over the other.c. biologists are conducting research where psychologists have given upd. the structural difference in the brain between the sexes has long been known.26the corpus callosum functions in _.a. forming the nerve fibers.b. differing man from woman.c. enabling the brain to work.d. processing the most complex intellectuality.27according to the passage it is commonly believed that brain differences are caused by _factors.a. social b. psychological c. physical d. biological28these differences in paragraph 5 refer to those in _.a. school subjectsb. skills of men and womenc. the brain structure of men and womend. activities carried out by the brain29at the end of the passage the author proposes more work on _.a. the brain structure as a wholeb. the functioning of part of the brainc. the distinction between the sexesd. the effects of the corpus callosumcsigning up for a digital tv service provides you with access to over 200 channels from all over the globe. however, nation and especially the young people admire.if you get a list of the heroes of a nation,it will tell you the potential(潜力) of that nation.today in america,if you ask the high school students to list their heroes, their choices would probably fall into three groups.the first group of heroes would be the rock starsthe people connected with rock music.there is no doubt that such people do have talent(才能).but one wonders if one should treat rock stars as a model.the rock stars too often are mixed with drugs and their personal life is not all that good.the rock stars are rich and wear the latest fashion styles.however, one should seek more in a hero than such things as money and good clothes.a second type of hero for the american youth is the sports star.again you have a person who has a great ability in one areasports.however, too often the personal life of the sports star is a bit of disorder.too frequently drugs and drinking are a part of life of the sports star.a third type of hero is the tv or movie star.this person may have lots of acting talent and is quite handsome.however, the personal life of too many actors is quite sad and they should not be held up as a model of young people.today, the rock star, the athlete and the actor all have become the models of the youth in america.really,do you hear a young person say that his hero is a doctor,a teacher or a scientist?these people are not rich and do not wear fashionable clothes.however, they are talented people who work hard to make the world a better place for everyone.what is really sad is that the young try to imitate(模仿) their heroes.they like to wear the same clothes and follow their styles.if the heroes of today for the american young people are limited only to rock stars, athletes and actors, the future does not look too bright.33the last sentence of the first paragraph implies that .a.if a nation has a lot of heroes,it will be strongb.heroes of a nation will make the nation itselfc.what the people admire will make the future of the nationd.if you want to be a hero, you must admire the hero34according to the writer, people should admire those .a.who are rich and wear the latest fashion clothesb.who can express peoples feelingsc.whose personal life is goodd.who work for the interests of the people35what is the writers attitude towards american youths admiration?a.he
