The recording and transcript are created by papa ielts , please refer to “ for further informationDescribe a happy family member event in your childhoodYou should say:What the event wasWho was involved in this eventWhat you did in this eventAnd explain why it made you feel happy 01和爸爸开车兜风That was a bright and sunny Sunday morning in May, a month before my college entrance exam. Iwas in a bad mood and temper (心情不好,feel down in the dumps)at that period. My dad was worried about me so he decided to take me to a road trip. At first I didnt want to go; I told him that I still got a lot of work to do. But he insisted to go and told me the schedule cannot be cancelled. I had no choice but to go. During the journey I was thinking about my poor grades all the time witha grim face (拉着脸,a cross face). My dad noticed my negative emotion, and he tried to tell jokes to make me laugh. But I just couldntget rid of (摆脱,get over)the gloomy feelings. I decided to have a deep talk with my dad. I told him about my recent grades and my worry that I cannot go to my dream university. Also I admitted my relationship with my boyfriend. I was apprehensive because I was afraid my dad wouldlose his temper (发火,get mad at me). Chinese parents always think high school students should not be in love, otherwise the love would ruin their grades. Fortunately, my dad was quite open-minded. He discussed my situationin real earnest (认真地,seriously)and helped me analyse what I can do in the following month. I felt happier than before. I felt ashamed because I brought my own negative feeling to my dad and refused to communicate with him before. And I was so grateful that he tried their best to comfort me. I wish we could have this kind of trip as many as possible.02和妈妈做饭My mom has always been my role model in my life. I witnessed with my own eyes how she managed to overcome all thesetbacks (挫折, difficulties)she encountered andhold fast to (坚持, 紧紧抓住)her dream. As an expert in cooking various Chinesehousehold dishes (家常菜), she enjoys a high reputation in our community, and some of her signature dishes, likebraised pork with brown sauce (红烧肉)andsweet and sour ribs (糖醋排骨),are deeply appreciated not only by local Shanghainese, but also by some foreignerfoodies (美食爱好者).Growing up eating her dishes, I dreamt of one day inheriting hersecret recipe (秘方)and make a dinner with her together in the future. One day at home this dream came true as I downloaded some recipes and process from the internet and tried them out throughtrial and error (反复试验)with the help of my mom, in the hope of creating my own signature dish. As is known to all, Chinese cuisine enjoys a high reputation all over the world for its perfect combination of color, aroma (香, flavor)and taste. By working with my mom, we brought herspecialty(拿手菜)to the next level (更上一个台阶).03和姐姐采花I have a cousin, Lucy, who is 3 years older than me. When we were young/children, our families kept a tight relationship, so we had many chances to play together. At that time my house was next to hers, and we shared a big garden. Her mom lovedcultivating (种植,growing)flowers, and the garden was very beautiful with herunremitting efforts (不懈努力,persistent efforts). In spring and summer, most of the different kinds of flowersburst into bloom (开始绽放,started blossoming). We always sat on the grass and shared about our life while making flower-chains. At that time, we both dreamt of becoming a princess, so we wore the flower chains as our tiara. Her mom always blamed us for damaging herpainstakingly built garden (精心打造的,well-cared garden), but we didnt care. Most of the time, I sat down to listen to Lucys stories. For example, when she fell in love with her classmate, she had aquarrel (争执,problems)with her best friends, and so on.Unconsciously (不知不觉地,Before we knew it), this garden had become our tree hole. Life was smooth and happy for us. Every afternoon when we were off our classes, we arranged our meeting there. However, Lucys family moved out after she entered high school, and I lost in touch with her. The garden was soon deserted after they left. But I would never forget our happy childhood there.04和姐姐跳橡皮筋I can still remember my favorite family game-skipping rubber band(跳皮筋) with my sister. This game requires more than three people to dance and skip over a chain of a rubber bands. Usually I play this game with my family, and my sister is the best among us! This event is really fun. Players should be familiar with the steps to skip. Sometimes I am too nervous or careless and forget how to skip over it. Sometimes the rubber band will rise to a much higher level, so it is more difficult to succeed in skipping over it withouttrapping(绊倒)yourself.I love this game because it is challenging and interesting. It also needswonderful cooperation(极好的合作能力)among team members. I may train my attentions as well as my carefulness when playing with my sister. She has agift(天赋) for it. I can never defeat her!I bet she play this game fora multitude of(大量) times!05和哥哥抓鱼My family moved out of our hometown into the city when I was only 7 years old. I still remembered how I felt lonely and depressed in the city because all my cousins remained in the countryside.Because of the one-child policy in China, I am the only kid in the family and as a 7-year-old boy/girl; I couldnt find new friends to play with in a completely new environment full of strangers. That is why I wasoverjoyed(狂喜, ecstatic) when my parents decided to visit the countryside during the first summer vacation in my primary school. I met my cousins again and weplayed wildly(疯玩地) in the countryside. The most interesting event I remember to this day was fish catching with my brother. We had a fish pond near our house at the countryside and the water was clear and shallow, which made fish catching easy and fun. At first my brother insisted we catch fish with our bare hands just for the fun of it, but we were not asdexterous(灵巧的,敏捷的) as we thought we were. The experiment was a disaster and we only got our hands dirty without catching a single fish. After the failure, we decided to use the fish net and relax ourselves. The tool was very efficient and we caught a bag of fish for dinner. It was particularly exciting not only for what we did in particular but more for the fact that I was able to meet with my cousins again and indulge myself in the idyllic environment.06和弟弟打篮球I have a little brother who is three years younger than me, who I have created a lot of wonderful childhood memories together with. I used to play games a lot with my younger brother when we are both little, but as he and I grew older, we have been spending more and more time on our studies and less time wereavailable (有空的, free)for us tohang out (与某人呆在一起). My best childhood memory would be the times of playing basketball with him.My parents were always busy at work. Thepressure (压力)of raising a family is quite hard in China, especially in a home with more than one child.Hence (因此, Therefore), my brother and I had to take care of ourselves and find ways ofkilling time (打发时间, passing time)together when there was only two of us at home. At first there were no balls and no baskets, so it is only apretended (假装的)basketball game. We throw little rocks and papers into our designed destinations in ourbackyard (后院). Later on I asked my parents to buy us a basketball, and we would go to thecommunity centers (社区中心)basketball court to play. We were against each other when it is the two of us, but after we met a few other friends at the community center, my brother and I became teammates.Happy memories are not onlymemorable (值得记住的)just because we were happy playing games at that time. It is also because I can see from the cute little boy his strong side when he plays basketball. I am so proud of having such a little brother. Even though I am older than my brother, and I am usually the one who takes care of everything between us, I still really enjoy seeing themanly (男子汉的)side of him.07和妈妈种花I spent my childhood in the countryside living with my mother while my father worked in the city. When it comes to the happy family events in my childhood, the most impressive one wascultivating (种植, grow/plant)a variety of flowers with my mother in our courtyard garden.Unlike living in the city where land ss expensive in China, nearly every household in rural areasposses (拥有, own)a courtyard. As my mother loved flowers greatly, each year she would grow different breeds in our back garden. When the spring wasaround the corner (即将到来, coming), the garden began to turn lively andanimated (有生气的, vibrant). The plants came out and spread their new leaves. In May, many flowers were blooming, like Chinese roses, camphire (凤仙花), andcamellia (山茶花), etc., making our living environment quite idyllic and pastoral. Under the influence of my mother, I began to help grow flowers. In different seasons, we would choosecorresponding (相应的)plants to cultivate. When they were in need of care, we worked toirrigate (浇灌)andfertilize (施肥)them so that they could grow well and burst intogorgeous (绚丽的, beautiful)flowers. We even cultivated vegetables, like tomatoes and cucumber in the garden. The fruits were used for cooking and tasted fairly good.Time flies! Now I am living with my parents in cities, and it seems impossible to have a garden. When reviewing that period of time, I realize that this family event has benefited me a lot. Itnurtures (培养)an intendancy of pursuing nature, beauty and freedom in my young heart. I really miss the garden in the countryside in my childhood and the wonderful memories of growing flowers with my mother.08听奶奶讲故事When Iwas still a child, my grandma and I used to sit on the couch as she told me stories of herself and my dad. Usually it was just us two, butoccasionally(偶尔,sometimes)my dad or mom would join in too. On weekends when I didnt have to go to school and I finished my homework, I would run to my grandmas and ask her to tell me stories. Oncein the presence of(当着某人的面,in front of)mydad and in spite of hisobstruction in every possible way(百般阻挠), grandma still disclosed some embarrassing memories of him. When dad was in primary school, he made a paper ring with many little pieces, and it took him quite some time to finish. But when he went back from the restroom, it was missing. He was so angry and asked the other guys with him who took it. Someone said, Tom did it, and then my dad walked towards himwith indignation(义愤填膺地,angrily)and hit him on the head and he cried. But finally it turned out that the ring was blown away by wind. So my dad apologized to him, and he finally became dads best friend. Since my dad always impressed me as an educated andcourtly(儒雅的)gentleman, it was kind ofjaw-dropping(令人咋舌的,surprising)to know that he was that impulsive, but to be honest that story just made my dad more adorable. Besides, he also gave me a lot of descriptions of how poor people used to be and taught me to appreciate what I had now. The storytelling event just makes me happy not only because of those funny stories but also because I was taught to be grateful and kind to others which makes the person who I am now.09家人共度新春The Spring Festival orChinese New Yearcelebration was the happiest family event in my childhood. As the most important traditional festival in China, it is celebrated inlunar calendar (阴历), with customs relating to food, decorations, greetings, and gifts etc. From the 23rdof the 12thlunar month, my family began tocarry out (实施)athorough cleaning (大扫除)of our house. The cleaning was called “sweeping the dust”, and represented a wish to put away old things, bid farewell to (告别)the old year, and welcome the New Year. As for decorations, we would decorate our house with redcouplets (对联), New Year paintings, and red lanterns at New Years Eve. Usually my father wrote the spring couplets himself and I was responsible for pasting them. We also pastedgod images (门神)on the door as a prayer for blessings, longevity (长寿), health, and peace. Two door gods on double doorssymbolizes(象征, represent)righteousness (正义)and power, and were thought to keep evil spirits from entering. In theNew Years Eve, we would have areunion dinner(团圆饭)with my grandparents, named as Nian Ye Fan. The New Years Eve dinner was usually very large andsumptuous (奢侈的)and traditionally included various dishes. It was really a period of time for family gatherings. With laughing and chatting, the house was full of pleasant and joyous atmosphere. Like other Chinese people, itwas also a custom for my family to watch the CCTVNew Year Gala (春晚)while having our reunion dinner. The Gala started at 8:00 pm and ended at 12:00 when the New Year arrived. Programs featured traditional Chinese folk songs and performances. Chinas best singers, musical groups, andacrobats (杂技演员)would appear on the show each year.10和妹妹跳舞Last year, my grandfather hada stroke(中风)unexpectedly. My young sister and Iresolved(决定,decided)to give a show toconjure up(使想起)some
