2013高考英语重庆八中二轮阅读理解精选训练(12)及答案a it was a warm april day when a big fat envelope came in the mail from the only college i had ever imagined attending. i tore open the packet. my eyes were fixed on the word “congratulations.” i dont remember ever smiling so wide. then i looked at my financial (财政的) package. the cost of dream schools tuition(学费), room and board was around $ 40,000- an impossible sum! how could i afford to attend? what good reasons did i have to go there when three other fine colleges were offering me free tuition? my other choices were good, solid schools even if they werent as famous as my first choice. in my mind, attending my dream university would be the only way to realize my dream of becoming a world-class writer. my parents understood how i felt. they told me that even though it would be a financial problem, i could go wherever i would be happiest. but as i was always careful with money, i wasnt sure what to do. one of the schools that offered me a full ride had an informational dinner one night in the spring. considering my parents financial difficulties, i decided to drive the 45 minutes and attend. at first, all i had planned to do was smile politely, eat free food, listen quietly. but i surprised myself. at dinner the president of the university talked about the wonderful activities on campus (校园) including guest lectures and social gatherings. he also made it perfectly clear that free food would be offered at all future events. he continued with explanations of professors, class sizes, activities, and sporting events on campus. as he spoke, i began to realize that this school, though not as good as my first choice, might be the best one for me. it seemed small yet with many great programs. it seemed challenging yet caring. as the president ended his speech, we clapped politely and pushed back our chairs. as i walked out that door, a feeling of comfort washed over me. looking at the campus that night, i realized that i would be spending the next four years right there. in all honesty, my university is not as well-known as my “dream” university. however, it turned out to be the right choice of schools for me. 56. how did the author feel when he started to read the letter? a. he was uncertain which school to go to. b. he was lost in his dream. c. he was worried about the money. d. he was full of joy. 57. we can learn from the passage that the parents were _. a. supportive b. strictc. honest d. decisive58. in paragraph 5, “offered me a full ride” can be replaced by “_”. a. would pay for transport to the school b. would charge me nothing for tuition c. would offer free meals at all events d. would show me around the campus59. what does the author mainly want to say? a. you should try your best to attend your dream school. b. you should consider comfort in your choice of schools. c. your second-choice college may actually be your best fit.d. your choice of schools should be based on their fame. b grown-ups know that people and objects are solid. at the movies, we know that if we reach out to touch tom cruise, all we will feel is air. but does a baby have this understanding? to see whether babies know objects are solid, t. bower designed a method for projecting an optical illusion (视觉影像) of a hanging ball. his plan was to first give babies a real ball, one they could reach out and touch, and then to show them the illusion. if they knew that objects are solid and they reached out for the illusion and found empty air, they could be expected to show surprise in their faces and movements. all the 16-to 24- week -old babies tested were surprised when they reached for the illusion and found that the ball was not there. grown-ups also have a sense of object permanence. we know that if we put a box in a room and lock the door, the box will still be there when we come back. but does a baby realize that a ball that rolls under a chair does not disappear and go to never-never land? experiments done by bower suggest that babies develop a sense of object permanence when they are about 18 weeks old. in his experiments, bower used a toy train that went behind a screen. when 16-week-old and 22-week-old babies watched the toy train disappear behind the left side of the screen, they looked to the right, expecting it to reappear. if the experimenter took the train off the table and lifted the screen, all the babies seemed surprised not to see the train. this seems to show that all the babies had a sense of object permanence. but the second part of the experiment showed that this was not really the case. the researcher substituted(替换)a ball for the train when it went behind the screen. the 22-week-old babies seemed surprised and looked back to the left side for the train. but the 16-week-old babies did not seem to notice the switch(更换). thus, the 16-week-old babies seemed to have a sense of “something permanence,” while the 22-week-old babies had a sense of object permanence related to a particular object. 60. the passage is mainly about _. a. babies sense of sight b. babies understanding of objects c. effects of experiments on babies d. different tests on babies feelings 61. in paragraph 3, “object permanence” means that when out of sight, an object _. a. still stays solid b. keeps its shape c. still exists d. is beyond reach 62. what did bower use in his experiments? a. a screen. b. a chair. c. a film. d. a box. c it is difficult for doctors to help a person with a damaged brain. without enough blood, the brain lives for only three to five minutes. more often the doctors cant fix the damage. sometimes they are afraid to try something to help because it is dangerous to work on the brain. the doctors might make the person worse if he operates on the brain. dr. robert white, a famous professor and doctor, thinks he knows a way to help. he thinks doctors should make the brain very cold. if it is very cold, the brain can live without blood for 30 minutes. this gives the doctor a longer time to do something for the brain. dr. white tried his idea on 13 monkeys. first he taught them to do different jobs, then he operated on them. he made the monkeys blood go through a machine. the machine cooled the blood. then the machine sent the blood back to the monkeys brains. when the brains temperature was 10c, dr. white stopped the blood to the brain. after 30 minutes he turned the blood back on. he warmed the blood again. after their operations the monkeys were like they had been before. they were healthy and busy. each one could still do the jobs the doctor had taught them.63. the biggest difficulty in operating on the damaged brain is that _. a. the damage is extremely hard to fixb. the patients are often too nervous c. the time is too short for doctorsd. the blood-cooling machine might break down64. the brain operation was made possible mainly by _. a. taking the blood out of the brain b. lowering the brains temperature c. having the blood go through a machine d. trying the operation on monkeys first65. with dr. whites new idea, the operation on the damaged brain _. a. can help monkeys do different jobsb. can keep the brains blood warm c. can keep the patients brain healthy d. can last as long as 30 minutes66. what is the right order of the steps in the operation? a. send the cooled blood back to the brainb. stop the blood to the brain c. have the blood cooled downd. operate on the brain a. c, a, b, d b. a, b, c, d c. c, b, d, a d. b, c, d, adwhy i dont spare “spare change” “poor but honest.” “the deserving (值得帮助的) poor.” these words always come to my mind when i think of “the poor.” but i also think of people who, perhaps through alcohol (酒) or drugs, have ruined not only their own lives but also the lives of others in order to give way to their own pleasure. perhaps alcoholism and drug addiction (上瘾) really are “diseases,” as many people say, but my own feeling-based, of course, not on any serious study-is that most alcoholics and drug addicts belong to the “undeserving poor.” and that is largely why i dont give spare change to beggars. but surely among the street people there are also some who can rightly be called “deserving.” deserving what? my spare change? or simply the governments assistance? it happens that i have been brought up to believe that it is proper to make contributions to charity (慈善机构), but if i give some change to a beggar, am i making a contribution to charity and thereby helping someone, or, am i perhaps simply encouraging someone not to get help? or, maybe even worse, am i supporting a cheat? if one believes in the value of private charity, one can either give to needy people or to charitable organizations. in giving to a beggar one may indeed be helping a person who badly needs help, but one cannot be certain that one is giving to a needy person. in giving to an organization, on the other hand, one can feel that ones money is likely to be used wisely. true, facing a beggar one may feel that this particular unfortunate person needs help at this moment-a cup of coffee or a sandwich-and the need will not be met unless i put my hand in my pocket right now. but i have come to think that the beggars whom i meet can get along without my spare change, and indeed perhaps they are actually better off for not having money to buy alcohol or drugs.i know nothing about these beggars, but its my impression that they simply prefer begging to working. i am not generalizing about street people. i am talking about the people whom i actually meet. th
