would you like to be when you grow up? a teacher? a doctor? an astronaut? what do you need to do to achieve your dream job?perhaps you think that studying well and then going on to work hard will get you the successful career you want. we are constantly taught that our hard work will eventually pay off.but a government survey has shown that hard work is not the only thing that will help you to move up the ladder. two thirds of people believe that who you know matters more than what you know when it comes to social activity. so are the connections that you have more important than your education?seventy-six percent of the people in the survey believed that family background is important in influencing your chances of success. they believe that if you are privileged from birth, you are more likely to have a successful career, especially if your family is wealthy. even if you dont have a privileged background, the people you know can still make a difference to your career. networking is a skill which is encouraged by many career advisers. some companies run networking workshops to try and encourage staff to meet other people, to communicate and build relationships. its a valuable skill.but the survey also showed something quite interesting. although most people believed that networks are more important than education, many people put their own career success down to talent, rather than background. 41% of the people said that their parents income had influenced their life, but at the same time, another 41% believed that they had achieved their own success.so which is more important, what you know or who you know? it seems that by working hard and making lots of connections, the answer may be that both are very important. 36which of the following is closest in to work more hours to pay for the same thing. for example, lets say that this year a loaf of bread costs $1.00 and the average salary in the united states is $10.00 per hour. that means a person could earn enough money to buy a loaf of bread in one-tenth of an hour, or six minutes, then, halfway through the year, the price of bread goes up to $1.25, while wages stay the same. that means that a person how has to work one-eighth of an hour, or seven and a half minutes to buy the same loaf of bread. now lets say that at the end of the year, wages go up to$11.00 per hour, but the price of bread goes up to $1.50. now a person has to work more than one-seventh of an hour, over eight minutes to but the same loaf of bread. as you can see, if more and more work time is spent earning money to buy loaves of bread, employees will have less money left over to buy other things inflation means that the same money buys fewer things and everybodys standard of living goes down, even if salaries are going up. some kinds of inflation are worse than others, moderate inflation does not distort(扭曲)relative prices or incomes seriously, galloping inflation happens rapidly, say at a rate of 100 percent or more within a year. and then there is hyperinflationinflation so serious that people try to get rid of their currency before prices rise further and make the money worthless. times of hyperinflation are usually characterized by social and political disorder.1the passage mainly wants to .alist major economic problemsbdiscuss something about inflationcexplain why bread prices increasedstate the types of inflation2why is“a loaf of bread”repeatedly mentioned?ato express dissatisfaction with the price of bread.bto show the effect of price changes.cto compare bread with other food.dto explain social and political disorder.3what happens when prices go up but salaries remain the same?athe government will do more about the economy.bworkers might lose their jobs of they show dissatisfaction.cpeople will save money rather than spend it.dpeople must work longer to buy the same things.4which of the followings belongs to the type of moderate inflation?apeople try to get rid of their currency.binflation occurs at rate of 100 percent in a yearcincomes and relative prices rise slightly.dthere is social and political disorder.参考答案1-4 b b d c nowadays, people in china are increasingly interested in celebrating foreign festivals, especially those western festivals. a survey conducted recently by sina. com. showed that among the 18,222 people surveyed 63.90% said celebrating christmas is just another way of recreation, nothing serious while 17.85% surveyed considered the festival as a fashion act, showing they were not “out”. these two parts clearly indicate the general opinion of the young. 10.45% people involved said the celebration of a religious western festival with so much enthusiasm is absolutely ridiculous pursuit of foreign goodness. only 7.80% of people define christmas as a kind of festival colonization(殖民).the arising of celebrating foreign festivals clearly has something to do with the advancement of chinas economy. in my point view, christmas and other festivals celebrated in china have difference from the origin. they have lost their religious background and turned into a big occasion to have fun and enjoy life. shop owners pockets are filled, the publics hunger for happiness is filled, and that is enough. foreign festivals in china are more like carnivals giving people pleasure and enjoyment. the crisis of traditional chinese festivals that are losing their attraction may be linked to the culture tradition and background of the festivals. most chinese festival culture is related more or less to real life. “the country is based on its people while the people are relied on their food”. but the western culture shows much of romance. some festivals have their religious background while others have much to do with culture and people. at this point, food seems to be too plain. flowers and chocolates are more welcomed.foreign festivals in china are celebrated for fun. they give people opportunities to relax and celebrate, to show appreciation and gratefulness. the acceptance of foreign festivals generally depends on the openness of the public, the familiarity with the western culture, and most importantly, on peoples economic status.1from the survey we know that among the people surveyed _. amost think celebrating foreign festivals is ridiculous bmany fear that traditional chinese festivals will disappear soon csome think that celebrating foreign festivals is a sign of foreign goodness chasing dhalf think celebrating foreign festivals makes people not go out of fashion2the writer thinks that foreign festivals celebrated in china _.ahave lost their religious backgroundbare the same as those celebrated in the westccan give more fun than traditional chinese festivalsdmay reduce the hunger of public people3what is the main difference between foreign festivals and traditional chinese ones?aforeign festivals can make chinese shop owners pockets full quickly.bthe food at foreign festivals is too simple.cchinese festivals always have something to do with culture.dforeign festivals are romantic while traditional chinese ones are connected with reality.4which of the following may not be the reason why so many people accept foreign festivals? apeople can relax themselves.bpeople can show their thanks to others. cforeign festivals have longer histories than chinese ones. dpeople have known more about the western culture.参考答案 c a d c【广东省揭阳市2014高考英语一模试题】bone year our family decided to have a special celebration of mothers day, as a token of appreciations for all the sacrifices that mother had made for us. after breakfast we had arranged, as a surprise, to hire a car and take her for a beautiful drive in the country. mother was rarely able to have a treat like that, because she was busy in the house nearly all the time. but on the very morning of the day, we changed the plan a little, because it occurred to father that it would be even better to take mother fishing. as the car was hired and paid for, we might as well use it to drive up into the hills where the streams are. as father said, if you just go driving without object, you have a sense of aimlessness, but if you are going to fish there is a definite purpose that heightens the enjoyment. so we all felt it would be nicer for mother to have a definite purpose . father had just got a fishing rod the day before, which he said mother could use if she wanted to. only mother said she would much rather watch him fish than try to fish herself. so we got her to make up a sandwich lunch in case we got hungry, though we were to come home again to a big festive dinner. well, when the car came to the door, it turned out that there was not as much space in it as we had supposed. it was plain that we couldnt all get in. father said that he could just stay home and put in the time working in the garden. he said that there was a lot of rough dirty work that he could do, like digging a trench for the garbage, which would save hiring a man, and so he said that hed stay home; he said that we were not to let the fact that he had not had a real holiday for three years stand in our way. he wanted us to go right ahead and not to mind him. but of course we all felt that it would never do to let father stay home, especially as we knew he would make trouble if he did. the two girls, anne
