waved in the wind, and in the shallow bays were broad water lily leaves. there also lived a group of frogs.on every warm night, the voices of the frogs cheerfully arose. some voices were low and deep these were from the oldest and wisest of the frogs. some were high and shrill these were from those who didnt like to remember the days when they had tails and no legs.“kerrump! im chief of this pond!” croaked (呱呱叫) a frog.“kerrump! im chief of this pond!” replied another frog.a hungry crane was standing nearby, hidden by the grass that grew at the waters edge. hearing the voice of the first frog, he quietly walked towards him. the frog gave a frightened croak, and kicked violently to get away.the crane almost had him when something wound itself round one of his legs. he drew back for a second, and the frog got away! but the crane did not lose his dinner; a water snake curled around his leg, and that made a meal.now he rested and listened. the first frog was silent, but the second frog croaked: “kerrump! im chief of this pond!”the crane got hungry again and went round the pond, trying to catch the second frog.just as he drew closer to the frog, the crane saw something that made him fly away. a mink (水貂) had crept very close to him, hoping to seize him for his meal! so the second frog got away, too; but he was so frightened that he never spoke again.after a long time, the crane got over his fear and became hungry once more. the frogs were singing again, and above them all, there boomed the voice of a third frog: “kerrump! im chief of this pond!”the crane decided to silence him once and for all. he croaked and struggled in vain. but just then, a fox crept up behind the crane. the crane was seized and carried off screaming into the woods. so the third frog got away, but he never dared to open his mouth again.21. why didnt the crane catch the first frog?a. the frog kicked too violently. b. something wound itself around the cranes leg.c. the crane was enjoyment. with stories from celtic lands, vietnam and india, simon creates a smooth and enjoyable set of stories that never make your mind in a mess. told with his authentic (纯正的) united kingdom accent and along with custom music by the storyteller and friends, the story collection is overall rather calming yet might surprise you in how quickly the layers of the tales take you into their welcoming. if we have any comment, it is that the track listings do not line up with what is listed on the packaging. it seems that the music between tracks has not been taken into account. while the music is very nice, it makes the story you want (at least the first time) a bit of an adventure. this is a minor point in an excellent cd. these days, people buy cds and tracks of music and stories with the new electronic ways, but not everyone gives as much thought to the cd case as simon has. frankly, like all of his cd collections, the artwork is excellent. the teller and the artist (rob brookes) have joined forces to create both a visual and auditory (听觉的) adventure. nicely done. although age 8 and up is listed on the cover of the cd, in our opinion, it would most likely be best for listeners from the age of 10 and up simply for the complexity(复杂) of the stories told. if youd like to order a copy, take a look at cd or on a.25. this text is mainly about _ simons new storytelling cd.a. the summary of b. the comments onc. the quotations from d. the details of26. according to the text, which of the following is true?a. the author feels a little confused about simons stories.b. theres something wrong with the cds track listings.c. most stories in the cd are about adventures.d. simons stories are too difficult for a 10- year-old child.27. from the text, we can know that _.a. many people like collecting simons storytelling cdsb. you may feel comfortable listening to the creative cd made by simon himselfc. the stories in simons cd are set in britaind. you will not feel bored when listening to simons stories28. whats the authors attitude towards this cd?a. uninterested. b. approving.c. disappointed. d. doubtful.cthe american goldfinch (金翅雀)during the mating season, the male goldfinch has a bright yellow body, black wings with white stripes, a black cap on its head and a white rump (尾部). females and winter males have duller feathers that are olive yellow. the males black cap may disappear in winter or turn a dull black. females dont have the black cap on their heads. both males and females have a small cone-shaped bill (鸟嘴).the goldfinchs winter and breeding range includes southern canada, most of the continental united states and parts of mexico. the goldfinch can be found all year round on the upper east coast, on the west coast and in the mid-section of the united states. northern populations spend winter in the southern u.s. and northern mexico.the goldfinch lives in weedy fields and flood plains as well as cultivated land, orchards and gardens.the goldfinchs diet is made up mostly of the seeds of grasses, weeds and other plants. it also eats the seeds of trees like birch, alder and elm. it feeds during the day and usually gets seeds that are still on the plant. the goldfinch mates later than most birds. it is mainly a seed eater and it doesnt nest until mid to late summer, when there are lots of seeds from weeds and other plants. because it mates so late in the year, it usually raises only one brood (一窝幼雏) a year. the female builds a cup-shaped nest in the fork of a tree or bush while the male keeps watch. the nest is made of plant fibers and bark and takes about six days to build. the female lays between four and six light blue eggs. the male feeds the female while she incubates (孵) the eggs. the eggs hatch in about two weeks. the chicks are born with their eyes closed. they open their eyes after about seven days and leave the nest when they are 10 to 16 days old. goldfinches are very sociable and often gather in flocks with other birds. some populations are short-distance migrators and move south in winter.29. what is the color of a male american goldfinchs cap in winter?a. red. b. white. c. olive africa.the new species of monkey was officially unveiled in a scientific journal last week.the animal kingdom has a new member. on september 12, researchers unveiled to the world a newly discovered species of monkey. the primate (灵长类动物) is called the lesula, short for its latin name, cercopithecus lomamiensis. the lesula is only the second monkey species discovered in 28 years.scientists first saw the lesula in june 2007 in the town of opala in the democratic republic of congo (drc). the lesula lives in the lowland rainforests of central drc. the monkey found in opala was the pet of a local family. researchers say the species was already well known to hunters. they found additional lesulas in the wild.the lesula has been compared to another species of monkey called cercopithecus hamlyni, better known as the owl-faced monkey. this animal earns its name for having a long, flat nose and a face that looks like that of an owl. the lesula and the owl-faced monkey are similar in size and both have a stripe on their nose. these new findings on the lesula prove that the two monkeys are close relatives, but different species. scientists say the lesula usually weighs about 12 pounds and measures about 20 inches. it has a mane (鬃毛) of long blond hair and a cream- colored stripe running down its nose. the lesula eats a vegetarian diet. its habitat extends nearly 11,000 square miles across the drcs eastern central basin.robert kityo is a zoology professor at ugandas makerere university. he says that the lesula discovery is proof that the eastern central basin is filled with species yet to be discovered. this new find also creates awareness about the importance of preserving african rainforests. many forests are threatened by illegal logging (伐木) and hunting. preserving these rainforests allows new species like the lesula to continue to grow and change.32. the monkey found in opala _.a. was the only living lesula b. got lost from its groupc. was raised by a local
