She looked at her pupils and said that she loved them all the same, that she would treat them all alike. And that was impossible because there in front of her, slumped in his seat on the third row, was a little boy named Teddy Stoddard.Mrs. Thompson had watched Teddy the year before and noticed he didnt play well with the other children. And Teddy was unpleasant. At the school where Mrs. Thompson taught, she was required to review each childs records. When she opened his file, she was surprised. His first-grade teacher wrote, Teddy is a bright, inquisitive child. He does his work neatly and has good manners.he is a joy to be around. His third-grade teacher wrote, Teddy continues to work hard but his mothers death has been hard on him. He tries to do his best but his father doesnt show much interest and his home life will soon affect him if some steps arent taken.By now Mrs. Thompson recognized the problem, and Christmas was coming. Her children brought her presents, all in beautiful ribbon and bright paper, except for Teddys, which was clumsily wrapped in heavy, brown paper. Mrs. Thompson took pains to open it. Some of the children started to laugh when she found a bracelet with some of the stones missing, and a bottle that was one-quarter full of perfume. She stopped the childrens laughter when she exclaimed how pretty the bracelet was, put it on, and dabbed some of the perfume behind the other wrist. Teddy Stoddard said, Mrs. Thompson, today you smelled just like my mom used to.After the children left, she cried for at least an hour.On that very day, she quit teaching reading, writing and speaking. Instead, she began to teach children. Jean Thompson paid particular attention to Teddy. As she worked with him, his mind seemed to come alive. The more she encouraged him, the faster he responded. By the end of the year he had become one of the smartest children in the class.A year later she found a note under her door, from Teddy, telling her that of all the teachers hed had in elementary school, she was his favorite. Ten years after that, she got another letter, saying that while things had been tough at times, hed stayed in school, had stuck with it, and would graduate from college with the highest of honors. He assured Mrs. Thompson she was still his favorite teacher. Then six more years passed and yet another letter came. He explained that after he got his bachelors degree, he decided to go a little further. The letter explained that she was still his favorite teacher but that now his name was a little longer. On the whole, the passage is _.rmative b.descriptive c.narrative d.subjectiveLarry Ellison is far from a run-of-the-mill businessman. Oracle is the worlds leading supplier of software for information management and the worlds second largest independent software company, boasting revenues of more than $9.7 billion. The huge success of the company makes Ellison one of the richest people in America. His drive, character and success motivated author Mike Wilson to write Ellisons biography entitled The difference Between God and Larry Ellison. If you would like to uncover the details of Ellisons life, nasty to nice, the book is brutally straightforward regarding the man commonly referred to as the Other Software Billionaire.Ellison is living proof that business is not something learned through academic textbooks, but rather an innate gift. A college dropout, Ellison is renowned for his impeccable business sense, drive and ambition. Its no surprise that in order to achieve Ellisons success, one must take huge risks and learn from mistakes made along the way. Was Ellison a risk taker?Well what would you call someone that promises products with features that dont even exist, only to go back to developers and demand that they deliver these forthcoming products? What about hiring staff that are not qualified for their positions - so unskilled, in fact, that they required manuals when chosen for their respective positions? Ellison deserves credit for that one as well.Ellison also demanded at least 100 percent growth in sales of his companys software, a near impossible feat for a company that already boasts $100 to $500 million in sales. It would have been impossible for Oracle and Ellison, if it wasnt for some dodgy sales practices. This may be considered one of Ellisons mistakes as it negatively affected Oracles business reputation. Although Ellisons high demands led to a highly stressful work environment, it also led to high productivity and Oracles present success. Oracle underwent some changes before becoming the multibillion-dollar corporation it is today. When first founded by Ellison, it was known as Software Development Laboratories and then reincarnated into Relational Technologies until it finally took on the name it is known as today: Oracle.Larry Ellison presently sits on the board of Apple Computer (a company he once dreamed of taking over along with Steve Jobs) and the Diane Fossey Gorilla Fund, while the many honors and awards he received include Entrepreneur of the Year from the Harvard School of Business. As well as a billionaire, Ellison is also believed to be quite a multi-faceted character: playboy, world champion sailboat racer, sports nut, jet pilot, ruthless businessman, marketing genius, and avant-garde thinker. We werent kidding when we said he is no ordinary businessman.Ellison has a secret wish: that he obtains his Russian MiG jet fighter and does a very low (and very loud) swoop by Mr. Gates residence.1. Larry Ellison _.a.is a run-of-mill businessmanb.is a college graduatec.is a billionaired.is a world champion car racer2. We can learn from the passage that _.a.innate business sense plays an important role in Ellisons successb.business can be learned through academic textbooksc.mistakes may negatively affect business reputationd.dodgy sales practices are not allowed in businessI have come to a conclusion that isnt earth-shattering. A cars windshield is larger than the rearview mirror for a good reason: Cars are designed to go forward more than backward. My next conclusion is more relevant. People, especially Christians and more especially those of us in advanced puberty, are also designed to go forward more than backward. But as I advance in age (notice I didnt say, am getting older) I find myself reflecting more on the past, on both the good and not so good.Hopefully, you remember more of the good than the bad. Unfortunately, it is easy enough for anyone to dredge up bad memories. Old hurts can destroy our present mood by reminding us what was wrong in the past. People with sour attitudes may be living out today what was wrong yesterday. This gets worse as we get along because we believe we have left the harvest years behind and face only empty ones ahead. This outlook is like driving using the rearview mirror. Not only is this approach psychologically flawed, but it isnt what God intended either. God showed His design for us to go forward, not backward, when Jesus sent the disciples forward from their known surroundings to spread the Word. And none of them ever retired. In reality you and I have more to offer now than we ever did before. We possess vast wisdom drawn from experience. We have influence, treasure and time to invest as we please. Opportunities arise everywhere in our families, among friends, in our churches and communities. We can make a positive difference by exhibiting a Christian worldview. To those who tend to live in a world of memories, good or bad, I urge you to look forward. As a person, touch someones life and become a fond memory for a special person.1. What does earth-shattering mean?a.That can shatter the earth.b.Very important to the whole world.c.That can shake the earth.d.Very shocking.2. How can bad memories be harmful?a.They can destroy our present mood.b.They can remind us of what was wrong in the past.c.They can convince us that we have left the harvest years behind.d.All of the above.3. According to the passage, the middle-aged possess all of the following EXCEPT_.a.Vast wisdom.b.Experiencec.Position.d.Time.4. What advice does the author give for those living in a world of memory?a.To look forward.b.To care about someones life.c.To help someone.d.All of the above.5. What does this article tell us?a.Cars are designed to go forward more than backward.b.People should go forward more than backward.c.People reflect more on the past when they get older.d.The windshield is larger than the rearview mirror.窗体顶端Passage Five:What is it you want to do, but havent done yet?Is it because you think its too late, or too scary, or because maybe you might fail?Yesterday, while walking the beach with our dog, Sasha, I met a retired couple from the Midwest. They kept saying how much they love visiting the Oregon coast. Were both crazy about the ocean, the woman said, and were kicking ourselves that we didnt buy some property here 10 years ago.Do you think its too late now? I asked.Well, uh, no, she said, but it would have been a lot cheaper then.So - will they stay stuck in an area they dislike, or will they dare to try something that feels exciting and challenging? If Id known them better, I would have mentioned the old line about the lady who waited so long for her ship to come in that her pier collapsed.Someone once said, Most people go through life in a state of quiet desperation. Going through life in a state of quiet expectation sounds a lot better to me.What it takes is a conscious change in attitude.Look how many people talk about making changes - but talk is all theyre good at. For example:Things would really be different if I could just: change my job get married have kids move somewhere else. You hear this stuff all the time.Ive enjoyed contesting as a sub-hobby for years. When an old friend in Nebraska found out that the 4th Polaroid camera had arrived at our house, she said, Oh, that would never happen to me, Im just not the type of person who ever wins anything. Why not change your attitude? I suggested. Sometimes you have to make things happen and see yourself as a winner. This gal never calls long distance, so I was surprised to hear her voice when the phone rang.Guess what? she yelled into the phone. I decided to try changing how I think about myself. I saw this contest notice in a store window, so I walked in and signed up and then really tried to picture myself as a winner. At this point she sounded breathless. They just called to tell me Ive won a HUNDRED DOLLARS! Then she added, so I figured I could afford to call and say your philosophy works. In my classes at Oregon Coast Community College Ive encouraged students to go for their dreams, to be passionate about something, (anything!) and, above all, to have faith in themselves. And on the subject of faith, did you hear about the two nuns who were driving down the highway, ran out of gas, and had to walk to the nearest gas station?Did you bring a container to put gas in? asked the attendant.Oh, no, said the nuns, there wasnt one in the car.Well, Im sorry, the attendant said, were all out of containers, but theres an old antique bedpan in the back room thatll hold enough gas to get you going. Youre welcome to use it.Soon they were trudging back to their car carefully carrying the bedpan. Just as they were pouring gas into the tank of their car, and 18-wheeler went by. Well, Ill be -, muttered the truckdriver. Now, thats what I call faith!1. What does kicking ourselves (para. 4) mean?a.Kicking each other.b.Blaming each other.c.Blaming ourselves.d.Feeling sorry.2. Why does the author cite the old line about the lady who waited so long for her ship to come in that her pier collapsed?a.To show that some people just let time slip by without accomplishing anything.b.To show that some people stay stuck in the same area.c.To show that some people never try something exciting and challenging.d.To show that the lady was faithful.3. What does the author think most people are good at?a.Making changes.b.Making plans.c.Expecting quietly.d.Talking about making changes.4. What does the author think is important?a.Talking about changesb.Changing our attitudes.c.Making plansd.Remaining unchanged.5. What does the story about two nuns illustrate?a.We should be passionate about what we do.b.We should go for our dreams.c.We should have faith in ourselves.d.We should make a conscious change in attitude.窗体底端窗体顶端Passage Six:Pop stars today enjoy a style of living which was once the prerogative only of Royalty. Wherever they go, people turn out in their thousands to greet them. The crowds go wild trying to catch a brief glimpse of their smiling, colorfully dressed idols. The stars are transported in their chauffeur driven Rolls-Royces, private helicopters or executive aero planes. They are surrounded b
