Newspapers in a hundred languages are warning of a new Black Death, and scientists are trying to cope with an illness for which there is no cure. The United States has most of the worlds AIDS cases. Children with AIDS are not allowed to go to school in several states. Victims are socially isolated and families break up. According to the report of a national health centre, AIDS is now the fourth leading cause of death for men in New York City and the sixth leading cause for women. In San Francisco, it has become the biggest single killer of unmarried men between 25 and 44. AIDS may soon become one of the ten leading causes for death in the United States. Medical experts call AIDS the Black Death of the 20th century, but there are difference. The Black Death killed only 40 percent of its victims in Europe. For AIDS there is so far no cure.According to some medical researchers, Central Africa is most likely the origin of the illness and it began in monkeys and spread to humans through bites by monkeys or eating of monkey meat. Sweden, which had about 30 reported AIDS cases in 1985, gave each of its people going abroad a book carrying a simple warning: “Never love a stranger.” The Kenyan government does not officially recognize the existence of AIDS for fear that its tourism income would be affected. However, the illness is officially recognized in Tanzania and Uganda, where tourism income is not of importance. In the Soviet Union, the illness is almost ignored by the press and there has been no official report about the existence or nonexistence of the illness. In China so far the only known case is that of an Argentine tourist who had caught the illness in the United States. Doctors are talking about the prevention of the illness. To help check the entry of this killer illness, China has stopped imports of nearly all blood products. Health checks have been given to foreigners living in China and some Chinese who have travelled abroad. Around this dry part are large sheep and cow farms. A few of them are as large as the smallest states in America. Often the nearest neighbors are several hundred km away. The two-way radio is very important to people who live on these great Australian farms. It works much like a telephone. A person can listen to someone else talk and then give an answer. For example, people on the large farms could talk to a doctor far away. They could tell the doctor about someone who was ill, and the doctor could let them know how to look after the sick person. As the large farms were so far from towns, the children could not go to school. Radio schools were started for them in some places. At a certain time each day, boys and girls turn on their radios and listen to teachers in cities far away.Families on the large farms wanted to give news to their neighbors. The programme “Round Robin” talks by radio were started to keep families in touch with each other. They could talk about who was going away and who was ill. The men could talk about their sheep and cows and how much money the markets would pay for them. In many ways the radio became a newspaper the farm people of Australia.62. But touching things can help you to see them better. Your eyes can tell you that a glass ball is round. But by holding it in your hands, you can feel how smooth(光滑) and cool the ball is. You can feel how heavy the glass is. When you feel all these about the ball, you really see it. With your skin, you can feel better. For example, your fingers can tell the difference between two coins in your pocket. You can feel a little drop of water on the back of your hand, too.All children soon learn what “Dont touch” means. They hear it often. Yet most of us keep on touching things as we grow up. In shops, we touch things as we might buy: food, clothes. To see something well, we have to touch it. There are ways of learning to see well by feeling. One way is to close your eyes and try to feel everything that is touching your skin. Feel the shoes on your feet, the clothes on your body, the air on your skin. At first, it is not easy to feel these things. You are too used to them. Most museums are just for looking. But today some museums have some things to touch. Their signs say, “Do touch!” There you can feel everything on show. If we want to see better, reach out and touch. Then you will really see!66.
