Big FishThe film Big Fish is directed by Tim Burton, from the novel “Big Fish: A Novel of Mythic Proportions” by Daniel Wallace.This film is about two things: first, the father, Ed Bloom larger than life stories, about how he comes to the world, how he travels the world and meets different kinds of people, how he finds his love of his life, and how he has his career and has his family; second, the son, Will, actually he has a bad relationship with his father, Ed Bloom. He does not believe anything his father tells him. He just regards his father as a teller of tall tales.Its very difficult to separate the difference between the reality and Wills fathers adventures. Because Will does not believe that his father once traveled the world at his 19 years or younger, however, he finds the town of Spectre is really existed, and there is really a girl named Jenny who loved his father before. And he never believes that his father once joined the Korean War a few years ago, but he finds the note reformed his mother that Ed Bloom died in the Korean War a few years ago. Thats the reason why Will begins to believe some parts of his fathers adventures.Ed Blooms larger-than-lifes stories begin when he is a young man, and end when he finds his love. Truly, he loves his wife very much, and he shows that kind of love directly. For example, on the ship, he says to everyone “Sometimes the way you catch an uncatchable woman is to offer her a wedding ring.” And the first time he sees Sandra, he believes that they say when you meet the love of your life, time stops, and thats true, however, when time begins, it goes quickly to make up the time which is lost. So he loses her. Then the owner of circus, Amos says “Most men have to get married before they lost their wives. But he also tells Ed that he knows the girl. Then, poor Ed begins to work for Amos to find her again. Every month, he knows something about Sandra from Amos, like “This girl, the love of your life, her favorite flowers are daffodil” or “This girl, the love of your life, likes music.” Then, Eds determination touches Amos, and fins her again. And then performs a dazzling series of romantic gestures to win her love. Whats more, he is honest to his wife, when he meets Jenny again, he refuses her love and says “Im sorry, I just love my wife, from the day I met her to the day I die.” This is the love story of Ed Bloom, and also a part of his adventures.To be honest, I believe that this films really aim is to show the relationship between father and son, between Ed Bloom and Will. No matter how unbelievable Ed adventures are, or how dangerous the trip is, or how funny the people he meets are, and hoe difficult for him to get his love. All he has done is just to let his son, Will, can be pride of his father. He wants to show his brave to Will, no matter when he is in the witchs garden, and he says to the witch “I want to see how I gone to die”, and then he says “Thats how I go”, or when he in front of the giants cave, he says to Carl, the giant, “Come on, you can eat me. And if you do not eat me, I wont go back”, or he cross the frightened forest, and he says to himself, “The more difficult something can be, the more reward.”, or during the Korean War, he fights with solders.For Will, he is really unwilling to accept those stories about his father. In his eyes, his father is nothing but a teller of tall tales. And just because he can not put up with those funny stories, he moves away and has not talked with his father for 3 years. But latterly, he comes back when he finds his father is ill badly. And at that time, he begins to travel the place where his father traveled, such as the town of Spectre, little by little, he begins to trust his father and the relationship between his father and he is rebuilt. With the time pass on, he knows something that his father never told to him. He meets Jenny, the girl appeared in Ed stories. Jenny says “He comes here twice, first time he is too early, and the second time he is too late.” Then, she tells Will how much his father likes him, and she says “I was made believe, but you are the reality.” Finally, Will realizes that no matter what the truth is about his fathers adventures, there is one thing can not be changed, that is, his father, Ed Bloom, loves him very much. So, Will finds the love once be lost between his father and his again.At the end of this film, Will trust his father, and the relationship between him and his father reunited again. So, we can see that when Will begins to imagine the death of his father, the giant, the witch, the conjoined-twin lounge singer, Amos, the poet, Jenny, everyone once appeared in his fathers outlandish stories comes to say goodbye to Ed. At last, Will says to his father “You become what you always were a very big fish”. And he also becomes a teller of tall tales, as his father said “we story tellers, I speak mine, you write your down, same thing.”Although the main thing the film tells us is Ed adventures, I think what the director wants to say is the relationship between father and son, its the most important thing the film wants to tell us.
