By this way, the author tells us that Americans like a friendly way in greeting.Step 4 Analyze the text in detail Passage 1IRelated InformationEnglish expressions borrowed from French Over the long years, the English language has borrowed a great number of French words or expressions. Some of them have been so absorbed in English that speakers might not realize their origin, other expressions like “faux pas” have retained their “Frenchness”, with which speakers tend to sound modern. These expressions are often written in italics. II.Explanation of Difficult Sentences1. Para 2. Missed connections are missed opportunities for business.Analysis: Missed is a verbs past participle used here as an adjective. The repeated use of the same word could bring out a stronger effect.Translation: 错失了联系就错失了商机。e.g. Can a broken heart be broken twice?2. Para 2. Not having your cards can be seen as being unprepared to market yourself and your business.Analysis: Not having your cards is a gerund phrase used as the subject of the sentence. Not is put in front of the gerund to make its negative form. Being unprepared is also a gerund used as the subject complement,Translation: 不带名片可被视为没有做好推介自己和推销业务的准备。e.g. Not trying at all is much worse than trying without success.3. Para 2. Dont start the new contact leaving them thinking “that the person is already unprepared”Analysis: Leaving them thinking is a participle phrase, indicating a concomitant adverbial of result.Translation: 千万别在开始新的交往时就让人觉得“这家伙就没打算同我交往”。e.g. Lets steer our ship with hope, leaving fear behind.Step 6 Give the students3-4 minutes to scan the passage B fast, then do the part one exercise of Passage B. Assignment: 1.Do the translation exercise of passage A.2. Preview the sentence writingSection IV Trying Your HandStep 1. Applied Writing1. A clean, creative, professionally printed and visually attractive card conveys a positive first impression that can linger long after your fist meeting. Job titles, the company name, your department (if you work for a large organization), as well as contact information (address, e-mail address, telephone number, fax and mobile-phone numbers) are usually given on business cards. Additionally a succinct description of your companys business can be helpful. Your card should display the same design and basic information as your other marketing materials. However, a business card is not a brochure or a catalog; its space is limited, so you must choose the information content and your words carefully. Single words and phrases should be used. A good approach is to break the essential information down into three areas: identity, credibility and clarity. The following items are often included in a business card.Titles:General Manager/ Vice Manager/ Sales Manager/ Director/ Dean/ Accountant/ President/ General EditorWork Units:Co. Ltd/ Group company/ TV Station/ Department/ Trade Company/ Electronics Co. Ltd.Others:Address/ Tel/ Fax/ Mobile/ E-mail2. Simulated writing: Do Simulate and Create exercisesStep 2 Sentence Writing and Grammar Review1.
