Brief Introduction to XiamenLocated in Southeastern Fujian Province at the estuary of Jiulong River along the southeastern coast of China, Xiamen lies at the crossroad of 118 degree 04 04 east longitude and 24 degree 26 46 north latitude. Backed by Zhangzhou and Quanzhou Plain and across Taiwan Island and Penghu Islands, Xiamen is made up of Xiamen Island, Gulangyu Island, the coastal areas along the north of inland river Jiulong as well as Tongan, covering a total land surface of more than 1,565.09 square kilometers and an oceanic area of more than 300 square kilometers. It is known as an international harbor scenic metropolitan.The Xiamen Island proper is 13.7 kilometers long and 12.5 kilometers wide, with an area of 128.14 square kilometers, the fourth largest island in Fujian Province. Xiamen Harbor is endowed with advantageous location for its wandering coastlines as long as 234 kilometers. And the harbor is dotted by various islets while inside the harbor, it is surrounded by arranges of mountains. The vast harbor is deep and free all year round, making it one of the key ports along the southeastern coastal areas of China. As one of the five special economic zones in China, Xiamen has five districts under its jurisdiction, namely Siming, Huli, Jimei, Haicang, Tongan and Xiangan. Minnan Dialect is widely used. And legend has it that Xiamen used to be the habitat of egrets, earning it the nickname of “Egret Island”. Located in the sub-tropical area with mild and raining climate, Xiamen holds an average temperature of 21 degree Celsius. Therefore, it is neither too hot in summer nor too cold in winter. The average rainfall annually is 1200 mm. Most rainfall takes place between May and August, with a wind force measuring from Grade 3 to 4. The dominant wind power is the northeast. Due to the impacts of temperature differences from the Pacific Ocean, Xiamen is affected by 4 to 5 typhoons every year, with July, August and September the worst period. In 2010, Xiamen witnessed a GDP of RMB 20.5374 billion yuan, an increase of 15.1% than the previously year. Among the total GDP, the added value of the primary industry is RMB 2.3 billion yuan, a rise of 3.2%; that of the secondary industry is RMB 102.686 billion yuan, an increase of 20.4%; and the total GDP of the tertiary industry is 100.388 billion yuan, up by 9.7%. The ratio between the three industries is 1.1：50.0：48.9. In 2010, the total registered population of Xiamen is 1.8021 million, among which 1.4507 million live in urban or downtown areas. The two districts, namely Siming and Huli make up a population of 0.8548 million, about 47.43% of the total population in Xiamen. The Citys average birthrate is 12.277 while the death rate is 8.017, leaving a natural population growth rate of 4.267, a fall of 4.057 compared with the previous year. The numbers of male and female population are 0.9078 million and 0.9002 million respectively, with a ratio of 100.18 As one of the most habitable cities in China, Xiamen boosts of a mild climate, beautiful landscape and a clean environment. Such advantages help gain the honorary tiles of international garden city, national designated hygienic city, national designated environmentally friendly city, Chinas outstanding tourist city, national top ten habitable city, UN Habitat Award and national civilized city, etc. Xiamen is also one of the four special economic zones to carry out the opening policy, enjoying local legislative power and economic administration power at provincial level. In light of this strong competitiveness, Xiamen ranks 5th among other cities in China by a report published in the Economy Daily. II 厦门市教育基本情况（一）学校和在校生数全市现有各级各类学校1072所，在校生70.02万人，其中全日制普通学校共939所，在校生57.70万人；成人学校（含培训机构）132所，注册学生12.31万人。普通全日制高校17所，在校生14.12万人；中等职业学校22所，在校生3.20万人；技工学校4所，在校生0.6万人；普通完全中学32所，初中62所（含九年一贯制学校），普高在校生4.25万人，初中在校生7.92万人；小学295所，在校生20.7667万人；特殊教育学校3所，在校生527人；幼儿园505所，在校生8.77万人。二、主要发展指标1996年，基本普及九年义务教育,基本扫除青壮年文盲。2005年，全面普及高中阶段教育，在全国率先实现初中毕业生100录取进入高中阶段各类学校；2007年，率先成为福建省第一个全面实现“高水平高质量普及九年义务教育”的设区市。2009年，率先成为福建省第一个全面实现“对县督导”的设区市，被教育部授予全国义务教育均衡发展先进地区，在中科院财贸所发布的城市教育竞争力调研报告中，我市教育综合竞争力名列全国15个副省级城市第三名。现有省一级达标中学14所，省二级达标中学8所，省三级达标中学6所；国家级重点中等职业学校7所，省级重点中等职业学校2所；省示范小学14所，义务教育标准化学校207所；省示范性幼儿园18所。全市普通高中生在三级以上达标校学习的占97% ，在一级达标校学习的占62%，中等职业学校学生在省级以上重点校学习的占62%。在公办中小学就学的进城务工人员子女达到8万多人，占全市进城务工人员子女的69%。小学毕业生升学自1998年以来连续第13年实行电脑派位；中招普职比58：42；高考上线率97.77%；2010年高等教育毛入学率94.43%，以252万常住人口计算，每十万人口在校大学生6174人（全日制6031人）。II.
