Outside, it was pouring so heavily. We all stood there just inside the door of the Wal-Mart. We waited, some patiently, others annoyed because nature messed up their hurried day. I got lost in the sound and sight of the heavens washing away the dirt and dust of the world. Her voice was so sweet as it broke the hypnotic trance (昏昏欲睡) we were all caught in. “Mom, lets run through the rain,” she said.“ No, honey. Well wait until it slows down a bit.” Mom replied. This young child waited about another minute and repeated, “Mom, lets run through the rain. ” “Well get soaked if we do,” Mom said.“ No, we wont, Mom. Thats not what you said this morning, ” the young girl said as she tore at her Moms arm.“This morning? When did I say we could run through the rain and not get wet?”“Dont you remember? When you were talking to Daddy about his cancer, you said, If God can get us through this, he can get us through anything!”The entire crowd stopped dead silent. I dare say you couldnt hear anything but the rain. We all stood silently. No one came or left in the next few minutes. Mom paused and thought for a moment about what she would say.Now some would laugh it off and criticize her for being silly. Some might even ignore what was said. But this was a moment in a young childs lifetime when affirmation was needed so that innocent(天真的) trust can be developed into faith. “Honey, you are absolutely right. Lets run through the rain. If get wet, well maybe we just need washing. ” Mom said. Then off they ran.We all stood watching, smiling and laughing as they rushed past the cars and they held their shopping bags over their heads just in case. They got soaked. But they were followed by a few who screamed and laughed like children all the way to their cars. And yes, l did. I ran. I got wet. Have a wonderful experience BAnyone who reads a book and then goes to see a movie based on that book generally leaves the movie feeling a little disappointed. Why might this be? Both books and movies serve the purpose of entertainment. Both books and movies offer characters and plots. And, both books and movies provide a setting for a story. Books, however, offer a more attractive and complex form of entertainment than movies. Although movies are entertaining to watch, books have advantages over them. First, books, in comparison to movies, can more easily seize the depths of characters and create a complex setting through the use of rich description. Books leave it up to the reader to interpret, imagine, and recreate the story in his or her own mind. However, movies are actionpacked and provide lots of visual stimuli(视觉刺激), still, it is the movie not the viewer that interprets the characters, plot and setting. Second, books are not limited to time. A writer can write as much or as little as necessary in order to create and tell a story. Movies, on the other hand, are limited to an hour and a half to two hours of entertaining time before the audience begins to get restless. Last, reading is an intellectual form of entertainment. Readers can improve their level of reading and vocabulary in a harmless, healthy, and pleasurable way. Movies, on the other hand, are not as complex and entertaining as books, and they leave nothing to interpret. Therefore, the advantages and entertainment value of books more than those of a movie. To conclude, books, through interpretation(解释), help the reader develop a sense of relationship to the characters and the story itself, but a movie strictly entertains. Books are a better form of entertainment than movies.45. According to the author, _. A. movies often make people disappointed B. more and more people prefer books to movies C. books have many advantages over movies D. both books and movies strictly entertain46. The underlined word “intellectual” in the second paragraph may relate to _. A. training B. learning C. translation D. memory47. We learn from the text that _.A. movies can easily seize the depths of charactersB. books provide more visual stimuli than movies C. books leave readers nothing to interpret and imagine D. movies are usually time limited compared with books48. Which of following would be the best title for the text? A. Movies: Easy Form of Entertainment B. Books: Better Form of EntertainmentC. How to Produce Movies Based on Books D. Why Are We Disappointed at Movies C“What is the most important thing youve done in your life?”The question was put to me during a presentation I gave to a group of lawyers. The answer came to me in an instant. Its not the one I gave, because the situation was not right. As a lawyer in the entertainment industry, I knew the audience wanted to hear some amusing stories about my work with well-known people. but heres the true answer: The most important thing Ive ever done occurred on October 8,1990. I began the day playing tennis with an old friend I hadnt seen for a while. Between points we talked about what had been happening in each others lives. He and his wife had just had a baby boy, who was keeping them up at night. While we were playing, a car came screaming up the road toward the courts. It was my friends father, who shouted to my friend that his baby had stopped breathing and was being rushed to the hospital. In a flash my friend was in the car and gone, disappearing in a cloud of dust. For a moment I just stood there, paralyzed(呆若木鸡). Then I tried to figure out what I should do. Follow my friend to the hospital? There was nothing I could accomplish there, I convinced myself. My friends son was in the care of doctors and nurses, and nothing I could do or say would affect the outcome. Be there for moral support? Well, maybe. But my friend and his wife both had large families, and I knew theyd be surrounded by relatives who would provide more than enough comfort and support, whatever happened. All I could do at the hospital, I decided, was to get in the way. Also, I had planned a full day with my family, who were waiting for me to get home. So I decided to head back to my house and check in my friend later. As I started my car, I realized that my friend had left his truck and keys at the courts. I now faced another problem. I couldnt leave the keys in the truck. So I decided to go to the hospital and give him the keys. When I arrived, I was directed to a room where my friend and his wife were waiting. As I had thought, the room was filled with family members silently watching my friend comfort his wife. I went in and stood by the door, trying to decide what to do next. Soon a doctor appeared. He approached my friend and his wife, and in a quiet voice told them that their son had died. For a long time the two held each other and cried, unaware of the rest of us standing around in pained silence. After they had calmed themselves, the doctor suggested they spend a few moments with their son. My friend and his wife stood up and walked past their families. When they reached the door, my friend saw me standing in the corner. He came over and hugged me and started to cry. My friends wife hugged me, too, and said , “Thanks for being here.” For the rest of that morning, I sat in the emergency room of that hospital and watched my friend and his wife hold the body of their infant son, and say goodbye. Its the most important thing I have ever done. The experience taught me two lessons. First: The most important thing Ive ever done happened when I was completely helpless. None of the things I had learned in university, in three years of law school or in six years of legal practice were of any use in that situation. Something terrible was happening to people I cared about, and I was powerless to change the outcome. All I could do was standing by and watching it happen. And yet it was critical that I do just that- just be there when someone needed me. Second: The most important thing Ive done almost didnt happen because of things I had learned in classroom and professional life. Law school taught me how to take a set of facts, break them down and organized them. These skills are critical for lawyers. When people come to us for help, theyre often stressed out and depend on a lawyer to think logically. But while learning to think, I almost forget how to feel. Today I have no doubt that I should have leapt into my car without hesitation and followed my friend to the hospital. From that one experience I learned that the most important thing in life isnt the money you make, the status you gain or the honors you achieve. The most important thing in life is the kids team you coach or the poem you write-or the time when youre just somebodys friend. 49.When he was asked about the most important thing he had done in life at a presentation, the author _.A felt it was not an interesting question B. thought for a while and spoke his mindC. gave an answer from a lawyers point of view D. didnt give the real answer50.What can we infer from the authors description of the scene at the hospital?A. He found out that he was in the way. B. He would have felt guilty if he had not been there.C. He regretted that he went too later.D. His friend would have felt better if he had not been there.51.Which of the following is conveyed in this story?A. Family and relatives can not take the place of friends.B. More people are a great comfort when one is in trouble. C. It is best to be here when someone needs you.D. You can certainly help a friend if you want to.52.The author learned from his own experience that_.A. what is taught in school is usually of no use.B. a lawyer cannot learn much in classroomsC. a lawyer should know p
