文档简介
01Language learning begins with listening. Children are greatly different in the amount of listening they do before they start speaking, and later starters are often long listeners .Most children will “obey” spoken instructions some time before they can speak, though the word “obey” is hardly accurate as a description of the eager and delighted cooperation usually shown by the child .Before they can speak, many children will also ask questions by gesture and by making questioning noises.Any attempt to study the development from the noises babies make to their first spoken words leads to considerable difficulties. It is agreed that they enjoy making noises, and that during the first few months one or two noises sort themselves as particularly expressive as delight, pain, friendliness, and so on. But since these cant be said to show the babys intention to communicate, they can hardly be regarded as early forms of language. It is agreed, too, that from about three months they play with sounds for enjoyment, and that by six months they are able to add new words to their store. This self-imitation(模仿)leads on to deliberate(有意的)imitation of sounds made or words spoken to them by other people. The problem then arises as to the point at which one can say that these imitations can be considered as speech. It is a problem we need to get out teeth into. The meaning of a word depends on what a particular person means by it in a particular situation and it is clear that what a child means by a word will change as he gains more experience of the world .Thus the use at seven months of “mama” as a greeting for his mother cannot be dismissed as a meaningless sound simply because he also uses it at other times for his father, his dog, or anything else he likes. Playful and meaningless imitation of what other people say continues after the child has begun to speak for himself, I doubt, however whether anything is gained when parents take advantage of this ability in an attempt to teach new sounds.1. Before children start speaking, _.A. they need equal amount of listening B. they need different amounts of listening C. they are all eager to cooperate with the adults by obeying spoken instructions D. they cant understand and obey the adults oral instructions2. Children who start speaking late _.A. may have problems with their listening B. probably do not hear enough language spoken around them C. usually pay close attention to what they hear D. often take a long time in learning to listen properly3. A babys first noises are _.A. an expression of his moods and feelings B. an early form of language C. a sign that he means to tell you something D. an imitation of the speech of adults4. The problem of deciding at what point a babys imitations can be considered as speech _.A. is important because words have different meanings for different people B. is one that should be properly understood because the meaning of words changes with age C. is not especially important because the changeover takes place graduallyD. is one that should be completely ignored (忽略) because childrens use of words is often meaningless4. The author implies _.A. parents can never hope to teach their children new sounds B. even after they have learnt to speak, children still enjoy imitating C. children no longer imitate people after they begin to speak D. children who are good at imitating learn new words more quickly1-5 BDACB02Love, success, happiness, family and freedom-how important are these values to you? It is not the amazing complexity of television, nor the impressive technology of transport. The universal wonder we share and experience is our ability to make noise without mouths, and so transmit ideas and thoughts to each others minds. This ability comes so naturally that we tend to forget what a miracle (奇迹) it is. Obviously, the ability to talk is something that marks humans off from animal. Of course, some animals have powers just as amazing, Birds can fly thousands miles by observing positions of the stars in the sky in relation to the time of day and year. In Natures talent show, humans are a species of animal that have developed their own special act. If we reduce it to basic terms, its an ability for communicating information to others, by varying sounds we make as we breathe out. Not that we dont have other powers of communication. Our facial expressions convey our emotions, such as anger, or joy, or disappointment. The way we hold our heads can indicate to others whether we are happy or sad. This is so-called “body language”. Bristling (直立的) fur is an unmistakable warning of attack among many animals. Similarly, the bowed head or drooping tail shows a readiness to take second place in any animal gathering. Such a means of communication is a basic mechanism that animals, including human beings, instinctively acquire and display. Is the ability to speak just another sort of instinct? If so, how did human beings acquire this amazing skills ? Biologist can readily indicate that particular area of our brain where speech mechanisms function, but this doesnt tell us how that part of our bodies originated in our biological history. 72. Before you take them from the paper, you should sort the stamps for example, by country. She wanted me to “make something” of myself, and decided I had better start young if I was to have any chance of keeping up with the competition. With my load of magazines I headed toward Belleville Avenue. The crowds were there. There were two gas stations on the corner of Belleville and Union. For several hours I made myself highly visible, making sure everyone could see me and the heavy black letters on the bag that said THE SATURDAY EVENING POST. When it was suppertime, I walked back home.“ How many did you sell, my boy?” my mother asked.“ None.”“ Where did you go?”“ The corner of Belleville and Union Avenues.”“ What did you do?”“ Stood on the corner waiting for somebody to buy a Saturday Evening Post.”“ You just stood there?”“ Didnt sell a single one.”“ My God, Russell!”Uncle Allen put in, “ Well, Ive decided to take the Post.” I handed him a copy and he paid me a nickle(五分镍币). It was the first nickle I earned.Afterwards my mother taught me how to be a salesman. I didnt want to make a success in the magazine business.“ If you think you can change your mind like this,” she replied, “ youll become a good-for-nothing.” She insisted that, as soon as school was over, I should start ringing doorbells, selling magazines. Whenever I said no, she would scold me.My mother and I had fought this battle almost as long as I could remember. My mother, dissatisfied with my fathers plain workmans life, determined that I would not grow up like him and his people. But never did she expect that, forty years later, such a successful journalist as me would go back to her husbands people for true life and love.56. Why did the boy start his job young? A.
