You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Passage 1American medical instruments and techniques are the most advanced in the world. Bu the medical costs are enormous. One of my Chinese friends got in a car accident and was scratched a little bit on his forehead.(76) He was admitted into a hospital and the doctor immediately gave him a through physical check-up from head to toes. Then he was charged$ 800 . My friend wondered why the American doctor made such a fuss. There are several different reasons for this. One reason is that the fees are divided among several different places. Secondly, there are many lawsuits(诉讼) against doctors in America. They have a lot of money and a lot of people go to court to try to get their money. (77)If doctors dont check something, and it turns out that they need to check it, the patient can sue(控告) for hundreds of thousands of dollars for a small oversight(疏忽) . The third reason is that medicine in America is a business for profit in many cases. The last reason is that a lot of American people cant pay the high medical costs. But by law the hospital has to take care of them anyway. So hospital has to charge other people more money to make up for those who can t pay very much or nothing at all.1. “Enormous” means _.A. normal B. small C. very great D. certain2. A certain percentage many be added to the bill at a hotel or restaurant “for the service”. (78)In other places the customer many be expected to give a tip, or a small amount of money, as a sign of appreciation whenever services are performed. In the United States there is no consistent practice in regard to tipping. The custom is more common in large city than in a small town. A native American may often be in doubt about when and how much to tip when he is in a city that is strange to him(79). In general, however, a tip is expected by the porter who carries your baggage, by taxi drivers (except, perhaps, in small towns), and by those who serve you in hotels and restaurants. When you pick up your incoming luggage at an airport, you may tip the man who takes it to the taxi or airport bus. He usually expects 35 cents a bag for his service. In some cities the taxi that takes you to your hotel many have one meter that shows the cost of the trip and another that shows a fixed charge, usually about 20 cents, for “extra” . In some cities the taxi driver may expect a tip in addition to the “extra” , especially if he carries your suitcase. If no “extra” is charged, tip is usually given. Hotels generally do not make a service charge, though there are places where one is added. It is customary, however , to give something to the porter who carries your suitcases and shows you to your room. In case of doubt, 35 cents for each bag he carries is satisfactory. In a restaurant you generally leave about 15 percent of the bill in small change on that table as tip for the person who has served you. A service charge is generally not included except in some the large , more expensive places. If the order is smalla cup of coffee at a lunch counter, or something of the sort- a tip is not usually expected.6. There are many different kinds of heroes, but they all seem to have two things in common. First, heroes, by their actions, show the great possibilities of human nature. Second, heroes can also stand the test of time, and their achievements will not be easily forgotten. Because of these qualities, we need to choose our heroes carefully. Olympic track star Jackie Joyner-Kersee, who many people believe is a hero, warns young people to be careful of making heroes of athletes. She hopes that if someone tries to imitate her, it will be because she achieved her goals by working hard. Joyner-Kersee says that a hero should be someone who has made difference in another persons life.Poet Maya Angelou believes that a hero inspires people to treat others well and to be concerned about the greater good. A hero should show politeness, courage, patience, and strength all the time. (80) A hero should inspire others to follow their concerns with actions that improve the world, even if only in small ways.Author Daniel Boorstin suggest that, “Celebrities are people who make news, but heroes are people who make history.” Thus , if a person is truly worthy to be called a hero, he or she will not be soon forgotten. We all need heroes. We need to be able look up to people who have been there, done that, and succeeded. Many times the greatest heroes are the people we deal with dailyrelatives, friends, and neighbours -who have kept going when it would have been easier to give up. The parent who puts her or his family ahead of a potential athletic career, the grandparent who chooses to stay and work instead of seeking fortune, the teacher who might have made more money at another career but chose to help others -all these people can be considered as heroes. A hero quietly and steadily sets a good example, and example that inspires others to follow it.11. A good title of this passage is _.A. Sports Heroes B. There Are No More Heroes C.
